Shameless but do you leave your house open?

When you are in it?

If you leave but other people are in it?

At night? .

All day?

Or is it always locked up right?

@JulesRimetStillGleaming

If this is a TAAT then it should be deleted.
I don’t think it’s a TAAT

This is inspired by it as the whole door locking thing took over the fact the op woke up to some random 5 year old in her living room and was told it was her fault for not locking the door. 🙄

iklboo · 18/04/2022 10:58

Always locked if going out, even if DS is in. Usually locked during the day as I WFH upstairs. Unlocked if DH is popping out on a short errand. Always locked at night.

WingBingo · 18/04/2022 10:59

Live rurally, only lock doors if we go on holiday!

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 18/04/2022 11:01

We have a weird amount of outside doors….so

Porch door left open all day, locked at night
Front door locks automatically
Snug door locks automatically
French doors are always locked
Upstairs door is always locked
Back door is locked at night, its locked when no one is in OR when my young adult children are in bed or in their rooms and dh and/or I are out OR when dh is working and I’m out

MolkosTeenageAngst · 18/04/2022 11:01

@toomuchlaundry

I assume those of you who leave doors unlocked don’t have contents insurance
What an odd assumption. Contents insurance can be used for purposes other than burglary. Locking the doors isn’t going to make a difference if your contents are destroyed in a fire or through water damage caused by flooding/ a burst pipe etc.
Auntieobem · 18/04/2022 11:03

Only locked at night, or when we are all out. Unless DP is the last one leaving in which case the front door will be locked, but side door and patio doors likely to be unlocked. In our last house we went on a 3 week holiday, DP in charge of locking up. We returned to patio doors wide open - not just unlocked. Luckily no-on had been in.

supadupapupascupa · 18/04/2022 11:04

Silly question. Depends on where you live. Here I could leave unlocked, previous homes they would be locked even if I was home and awake

Abraxan · 18/04/2022 11:04

Locked all the time.

Our living room is in the middle floor, upstairs. And the front door leads on to the drive/front garden which has no gates/wall/fence.

Front door is locked, but from the inside we just turn a know]b to open it.

brokengoalposts · 18/04/2022 11:06

Front and back only locked at night.

caecilius1 · 18/04/2022 11:08

@toomuchlaundry

For those of you who don’t lock doors, if someone got into your house, would you change your ways afterwards or would you think that was a one off
I wonder this too Smile
Abraxan · 18/04/2022 11:09

To be fair our area (suburbs of a city) is fairly safe, though has some break ins, usually to get car keys.

And it's very unlikely anyone would break in through the front door as it's open and very visible.

When we did have a break in (again, for car keys) several years back, they got in through the patio doors at the back. The alarm alerted them and they ran with the wrong keys. The doors were locked, as were the downstairs windows. But the locks were just cheap Ines and they got in within seconds. We have much stronger and dearer anti snap locks now on both doors - take far far longer to break in.

BooksAndHooks · 18/04/2022 11:10

You can’t open the front door without a key so it’s just shut if someone is home. If we are out I double lock it. Back door is open when we are in for the cat and locked when we go out.

Rosebel · 18/04/2022 11:10

Back door is always locked unless we're in the garden. Front door is Yale but double locked at night.
In the 70s/80s my parents used to have French doors at the back and were always forgetting to shut them, never mind lock them. They were pretty rural but even so...

Schhhteeevie · 18/04/2022 11:12

Front door locked back door generally unlocked and in summer mostly open all day

AndrewPreview · 18/04/2022 11:16

Locked at night or if we're out.

Back door (patio) is always locked if not open, side gate is always bolted (tall gate and bolt is unreachable from the front unless you're our ridiculously tall window cleaner). Front door isn't normally locked but you would hear it if it opened (and I'm normally in the room it enters into so it's not a worry) but we do lock it if we're elsewhere in the house.

May sound a little OTT for some, but we have had a stalker in the past and had a shed broken into (a lot of sheds/garages were targeted in one go).

Live in a small town, not a crime hotspot particularly but certainly not crime free.

toomuchlaundry · 18/04/2022 11:16

@MolkosTeenageAngst one poster has responded they don’t have contents insurance so maybe not an odd assumption. Probably people who don’t lock doors have a very different risk profile to those who do, so people who don’t lock doors also don’t worry/care/believe their property will get damaged in anyway or think insurance is a waste of money. Or they could just be stupid

Talia99 · 18/04/2022 11:17

Always locked and with the chain on at night (in a flat so only one door)

WonderfulYou · 18/04/2022 11:18

My doors are locked all day, every day.

When I’m inside the keys are left in the keyhole though so I can easily get out.

It stems from my DD letting herself out when she was very little and now my dog likes to let themselves out for a walk.

Tumbleweed101 · 18/04/2022 11:19

Mine is locked but that is more because of my dogs learning to open the front and back doors. They can't escape from the back but one.of my dogs barks a lot so prefer to supervise and if they get out the front there is a busy A road close by.

Iamtheweedonkey · 18/04/2022 11:19

My front door cannot be opened without a key from the outside. We double lock it when no one in the house or night time. Back door can be opened from outside, that is locked unless we are in the garden.

Takeittotheboss · 18/04/2022 11:20

Front door Yale. Back door never locked even when we're away as neighbours/family will maybe still need to get in to do stuff.
Not sure there is a key🤔 Live in village, never really noticed anyone except incoming Londoners locking their doors.

larkstar · 18/04/2022 11:20

Locked at night - back and front door are locked during the day when I'm in - I double check back door is locked when I have to answer the front door. The house is quite big so if I was in the kitchen I probably would hear someone come in through the front door especially if coking or if the radio is on - I miss the knock sometimes from my next door neighbour or the postman or delivery companies. I might also be in the garden at the back so the front door is locked.

Hallyup89 · 18/04/2022 11:23

Front door always locked to prevent the kids escaping. Back door tends to be open during the day so the kids can freely go in and out. Garden gate is always locked. Always lock all doors at night. Don't know why anyone would risk not doing so.

caringcarer · 18/04/2022 11:23

If we are at home house is unlocked but always locked over night or if we go out and son on second floor as he wouldn't not hear someone coming in.

LindaEllen · 18/04/2022 11:30

I always, always keep my house locked. We live in an area where people will walk round trying door handles to see if they can get in - so we would never leave it unlocked.
