Shameless but do you leave your house open?

When you are in it?

If you leave but other people are in it?

At night? .

All day?

Or is it always locked up right?

Nice rural area, every so often a gang will target the area for burglaries. Often distraction burglaries in through the back door for car keys/ handbags or they get in through a window left open. I guess people get complacent because of the area and it’s easy pickings.
So I keep mine locked unless there’s a reason not to, I dont really see it as any hassle. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t lock up at night when they’re in bed, even the ones who are very rural

Front door always locked as opens up to the road - not worried about theft or anything, its just sometimes kids mess around here and i worry the dog might get loose!

Back door not unlocked during day when home - door often open. Might lock it when its gets dark and i’m in the front room of an evening but not always. Always locked when i leave and at night though.

Walkingthedog46 · 18/04/2022 10:24

Both doors locked all the time even when I’m at home. Next door had a distraction burglary so doubly cautious now.

toomuchlaundry · 18/04/2022 10:24

For those of you who don’t lock doors, if someone got into your house, would you change your ways afterwards or would you think that was a one off

ChoiceMummy · 18/04/2022 10:29

@AchillesPoirot

My front door is always locked. My back door is unlocked during the day but locked at night. My back garden is enclosed and the gate has a padlock.
This is the same for us.

If this is a TAAT then it should be deleted.

Zazdar · 18/04/2022 10:32

Locked overnight when we are in bed. Otherwise, not locked if there is someone in.

TroysMammy · 18/04/2022 10:33

Front door always locked. Back door unlocked if I am downstairs but if I'm upstairs for any reason I lock it.

Back door is also locked if I'm around the front gardening.

What thread is it about? I did wonder what the shameless meant in the title, where's the shame in locking your door?
CandyCaneLane0 · 18/04/2022 10:37

Always locked

MolkosTeenageAngst · 18/04/2022 10:38

I lock the front door at night or when I go out but I don’t generally lock it when I’m awake and at home. I live in a busy suburban area.

I grew up in rural Wales where almost nobody locked their doors, I fed the cats of friends who went on holiday and I didn’t need a key as their doors were unlocked the whole time they were away.

BarbaraofSeville · 18/04/2022 10:42

We have latches on our doors which means you don't have to lock them with a key, and the door can be opened, but only a tiny bit.

Means we're not at risk of sneak in burglaries but can go out to the bins or whatever without needing to use a key. They were on the doors when we moved in and are very useful.

Obviously doors are always locked at night or when we go out. That's just common sense in nearly all areas.

BungleandGeorge · 18/04/2022 10:43

It’s not only a Problem for contents insurance. If the car key is not in my possession and in an unlocked area they don’t pay out either.

Pinkflipflop85 · 18/04/2022 10:44

Locked. Our neighbours were burgled during the day while they were in the house.

SoItWas · 18/04/2022 10:44

I have one of those locks with no handle just a keyhole, so I have no choice but I'd probably keep it locked all the time anyway. I lock the back door unless one of us is in the garden.

ZeroFsKarma · 18/04/2022 10:46

Locked always. Some random guy once tried the door early one morning, he did it to a few houses on the street. When I put the bins out I take the keys with me but I don't lock it.

Athrawes · 18/04/2022 10:49

Always open.
Otherwise how would anyone get in if I wasn't there.

Theala · 18/04/2022 10:49

Our doors are never locked. We live very, very rurally. Our bug dogs are far better security here than a locked door.
When we lived in the city centre 10 years ago, our apartment was broken into when we were in bed. Scared the life out of me and left me traumatised for a few years, but where we live now are very different circumstances.

toomuchlaundry · 18/04/2022 10:50

@Athrawes if you are not in why would anyone need to get into your house?

LondonQueen · 18/04/2022 10:50

It's always locked, I live in a nice area and have huge gates you would struggle to climb over but I wouldn't feel safe having the door unlocked.

NannyR · 18/04/2022 10:51

I always lock my door, even when I'm in the house. It's just second nature to unlock the door when I come in, stick the key back in the lock and turn it, it takes seconds and could save a lot of heartache and hassle.

Athrawes · 18/04/2022 10:54

@toomuchlaundry they might want to drop some veggies, use the loo, borrow something. Not in the UK.

Cyw2018 · 18/04/2022 10:55

I live rurally.

Today the back door is locked for the first time in months, as we are away overnight.

Normally when we are in we put the bolt across the top of the inner front door so that DD can't wander out the front or let the dog out, but back door is unlocked day or night when we are in the house or just out locally.

Most of my friends in nearby villages never lock their doors, and we just let ourselves in and shout to announce our arrival. One friend suddenly started locking hers as a friend had a acute deterioration of his schizophrenia and was turning up at all hours when friend was at home alone with her baby, pretty much every one of her friends walked hard into her front door on at least one occasion when it didn't open as expected!!

I would hate to live somewhere where I couldn't leave the doors unlocked whilst out walking the dog or going for a run, let alone whilst at home.

Sidisawetlettuce · 18/04/2022 10:55

Really shocked by people leaving front doors unlocked. My front and back door are locked all the time, even when we are both in. The back door is only left unlocked when someone is in the garden.

Norgernert · 18/04/2022 10:56

Only locked if we are away on holiday, or sometimes if away for the day.

We did once come downstairs to find a sheep in the kitchen.

Came back from honeymoon to find our hallway absolutely full of parcels from John Lewis.

One time came downstairs to find an exasperated man standing next to a load of suitcases (mistook us for the AirBNB next door.
