Because I'm bored :-)

Kathy cheating on Chandler was pretty unbelievable. They sacrificed a lot to be together and were very much in the honeymoon phase. Matthew Perry and Paget Brewster actually went to the producers to protest this and asked that instead she reluctantly leaves him to pursue a career elsewhere but they said no.

Joey was the only one who we never see get drunk throughout the whole show.

Ellen DeGeneres was apparently first choice for Phoebe but she turned it down.

Reese Witherspoon never got a cheer when she made her cameo as Rachel's sister... why? She was already pretty famous by that point.

I think we can all agree Brad Pitt's cameo cheer was the loudest! Closely followed by Christina Applegate.

Some of the scenarios were pretty unrealistic. Being divorced 3 times would be seriously upsetting in real life and not something your friends would regularly take the piss out of. Same with being bullied for being fat.

I think Rachel is the Friend who developed / changed the most. She started off as a whining, spoilt brat and ended up as an independent, considerate woman. Probably followed by either Ross from needy to cool or Chandler from being commitment phobic to a family man. I don't think Monica, Joey or Phoebe evolved very much at all. Thoughts?

Chandler and Monica in real life would be a very annoying couple. Both very full on. Janine had it sussed!

Phoebe and Joey would NEVER have been able to afford to live in Manhattan.

Ross and Rachel broke up and within a couple of months Rachel could hear him having sex with Bonnie in the next room at the beach house. In real life this would be absolutely traumatising.

Couldn't stand Emily or Susan and for some reason I feel pretty meh towards Mike. I much preferred David The Science Guy. He was so dryly funny.

Pete took Monica to Italy (or was it France?) for their first date. Even with millions of dollars how was this possible in a few hours?

Janice was perceived to be annoying. But actually other than the awful laugh and a complete inability to read the room... she was bloody lovely and a very good person to have as a friend. She gave good advice and I really liked her.

If Phoebe's brother Frank had been more mature and cut his hair he would have been really fit!

I'll probably think of others. For the record I LOVE the show I just like talking about it to other fans :-)

Rachel and Ross were my favourites to watch because of their brilliant physical comedy moments. The two of them in the launderette where Ross knocks himself out on the drier! All the actors were hilarious but those two are amazing to watch.

In terms of characters, though, Janice is by far my favourite. She was a lovely girlfriend to Chandler. I love Joey, too.

I hated the storylines they gave Phoebe, especially having her brother's triplets and then barely ever mentioning it again. Phoebe's character was great at first but over the seasons she just became ridiculous. She had such a great backstory and should have been given some deep storylines to work with.

DarleneSnell · 16/04/2022 11:59

Love Friends!!!

Fave eps off the top of my head were the Prom Video, the Flashback, the Embryos (where the girls lose the apartment), the Routine, the Stripper Cries, and where Everybody Finds Out.

Best celeb guests were Reese Witherspoon, Alec Baldwin and Brooke Shields.

Eddie, Janice and Joanna (the bitchy boss) were the funniest recurring guest characters.

My other 2 cents:

Controversial but I think Brad Pitt was wasted as hating Rachel. They should have been an old hookup. It was also totally unrealistic the rest would have tolerated his treatment of her during dinner.

Ross changed for the worse towards the end, he became way too highly strung! The "I'm fine" and sandwich storylines were awful. His dry humour and slapstick was Ross at his best.

Phoebe was pretty unlikeable throughout but esp by the end.

Ross and Rachel belonged together but the ending was so rushed it hurts. She had NO doubts boarding that plane even at the last second, it was only down to Ross they reconnected.
Side note - she wouldn't have gone to Paris anyway as Ross would not have agreed to his daughter being raised that far away.

DarleneSnell · 16/04/2022 12:02

Oh and

Amy was great in her first episode, TERRIBLE the second time. They totally overplayed it.

Freddie Prinz Jr as the male nanny is my 4th fave Celeb guest.

Aah I know he's an idiot in RL but Alec Baldwin is one of my favourite cameos...
"CLICK" 😭😂

GoodJanetBadJanet · 16/04/2022 12:45

She was a lovely girlfriend to Chandler.
Apart from when she cheated on him

GellerYeller · 16/04/2022 12:53

Bruce Willis was outstanding too in his episodes:
FIRED!
I too am a neat guy...
Ross dancing on MTV: Oh Dr Geller
Not sure Ross dating a student was their finest hour storyline wise obviously.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 16/04/2022 12:56

Think my favourite guest star was Julia Roberts as Susie Underpants 😁
As she steals all Chandlers clothes in the restaurant in revenge for him showing her pants at school
'' That was 20 years ago! How can you still.be mad at that?! ''
'' Well, why don't you give me a call in 20 years and see if you're still mad about this?! '' Grin

GellerYeller · 16/04/2022 13:06

@GoodJanetBadJanet and the Jean Claude Van Damne incident leading to 'handbag marinara' Grin

sammylady37 · 16/04/2022 13:17

I always had a soft spot for Chandler because of his insecurities. And I think he tried hard to be a good partner/husband, mostly.

clary · 16/04/2022 19:46

I don't think anyone has mentioned this; my fave scene is the one where Joey's mum comes in, furious that he has told his dad to come clean about his mistress, hands him a lasagne, whacks him on the head and folds away the sofabed he has been wrestling with, all in one swift movement.

Greyskiesaregonnaclearup · 16/04/2022 20:25

I love that scene with Joey's mum! She was fab.

This is controversial but I like Susan and Carol. Stable relationship, and Carol treats Ross's foibles with the tired air of a long term relationship (like the bit when she asks him why he freaked out about the breastmilk). The guts it would have taken her to admit she was actually gay and leave her marriage would have been huge but she gets the blame for his insecurities (paranoid city!) more than she deserved. Yes I realise she cheated on him with Susan. Seems most of the characters cheat at some point or another - Monica is the only one I can think of who didn't?

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 16/04/2022 20:36

I liked Mike, I think as the seasons went on phoebe became really mean though.

Joey was really sweet and a good friend but I didn't really like how by the end he could hardly string a sentence together

newlabelwriter · 16/04/2022 20:58

Going very much against the grain here and I actually quite liked the Joey /Rachel blossoming relationship. He was there for her when she was pregnant, they had a real genuine friendship and he really respected her. I think the writers could have worked at putting more meat on the bones of it to make it more plausible though for sure.

Found Ross in equal measures infuriating/ funny. David Schwimmer is such a great comedy actor.

doadeer · 16/04/2022 21:07

Is it not the most unrealistic thing ever that Rachel would leave a massive support network including grandparents who do frequent childcare, a loving aunt and uncle and her own baby's father and move to Paris where she doesn't know a single person, speak French or have any support for Emma? How selfish. I never understood that. I would have got it if she was childless but not with Emma?!?!?

doadeer · 16/04/2022 21:10

I rewatched recently and Ross absolutely had the most laugh out loud scenes. The leather pants, the spray tan, the "pivot" scene, so many funny ones

TotoAnnihiliation · 16/04/2022 22:13

Why is your family Scottish?

Why is your family Ross?

JohannSebastianBach · 16/04/2022 23:19

Just watched the Thanksgiving episode when they play football for the Geller Cup. Brilliant episode (apart from the weird bit with the Dutch girl)

GoodJanetBadJanet · 16/04/2022 23:30

Aw loved that's episode!
Is anyone else seeing a troll nailed to a bit of 4x4?! Grin
Although disagree with saying the bit with the Dutch lady (Marka? Probably spelled that wrong lol) was weird, thought that was funny too.
Chandler - Netherlands? That's where the Dutch are from, right?
Joey - hah, nice try, that's where Peter Pan is from!
Ross - OK, enough with geography for the insane!!
Grin

Andylion · 17/04/2022 02:36

One of my favourite guest stars was Hugh Laurie, although he wasn’t a star in North America at that time. House was years later and even Stuart Little came out the year after his appearance on Friends.

BobbyRhude · 17/04/2022 02:46

Love or hate Ross as a character, David Schwimmer is an incredibly talented actor in both his physical acting and they way he delivers his lines. PIVOT!

BobbyRhude · 17/04/2022 02:48

My favourite thing to do to my 17 yr old son who has Friends on 24/7 (it's his comfort show) is when he walks into a room and goes "Sup?"

I respond with a Joey

"Sup with the whack PlayStation Sup?!"

And we often have 'Grandma's Chicken Salad.." for dinner. Grin

AnnieJ1985 · 17/04/2022 18:35

I use Friends as white noise in the background when I can't sleep 😳

I know when it was written, nobody could have expected it to run on repeat for so many years, but some of the inconsistencies (especially towards the end) are mad

  • a whole episode about Chandler not able to smile for engagement pic, but no bother on the actual wedding pics
  • Monica being FURIOUS about his smoking in Tulsa, but in later episode when the adoption check is happening, she is almost jokingly asking about the cigarettes taped to the toilet.
  • Rachel freaking out about eyeballs and having to go to eye doctor, yet she took Monica to get her eye checked.

People not knowing each other is annoying. Monica and Rachel grew up with Richards kids, yet didn't recognise his son

Emma's first birthday when Joey tries to get in with Jack and Judy's present, Jack goes "which one are you again?"... the other 2 men are in your family!

There are more, I am sure

Love it though, it is like a cosy blanket

fffffeeeedddduupp · 17/04/2022 20:54

I think Eddie was the best character ever. "You sleep with my girlfriend and you kill my fish"!!
I really like Adam sander shouting at the chick and the duck.

Mol1628 · 17/04/2022 21:17

It’s Ben Stiller the shouting guy not Adam Sandler.

I also use it as a comfort blanket to sleep to all the time. I just have it on as background noise for company as well as I’m home alone a lot.

LizBennet · 17/04/2022 21:28

Ben Stiller was married to Bonnie in RL too.
