Because I'm bored :-)

Kathy cheating on Chandler was pretty unbelievable. They sacrificed a lot to be together and were very much in the honeymoon phase. Matthew Perry and Paget Brewster actually went to the producers to protest this and asked that instead she reluctantly leaves him to pursue a career elsewhere but they said no.

Joey was the only one who we never see get drunk throughout the whole show.

Ellen DeGeneres was apparently first choice for Phoebe but she turned it down.

Reese Witherspoon never got a cheer when she made her cameo as Rachel's sister... why? She was already pretty famous by that point.

I think we can all agree Brad Pitt's cameo cheer was the loudest! Closely followed by Christina Applegate.

Some of the scenarios were pretty unrealistic. Being divorced 3 times would be seriously upsetting in real life and not something your friends would regularly take the piss out of. Same with being bullied for being fat.

I think Rachel is the Friend who developed / changed the most. She started off as a whining, spoilt brat and ended up as an independent, considerate woman. Probably followed by either Ross from needy to cool or Chandler from being commitment phobic to a family man. I don't think Monica, Joey or Phoebe evolved very much at all. Thoughts?

Chandler and Monica in real life would be a very annoying couple. Both very full on. Janine had it sussed!

Phoebe and Joey would NEVER have been able to afford to live in Manhattan.

Ross and Rachel broke up and within a couple of months Rachel could hear him having sex with Bonnie in the next room at the beach house. In real life this would be absolutely traumatising.

Couldn't stand Emily or Susan and for some reason I feel pretty meh towards Mike. I much preferred David The Science Guy. He was so dryly funny.

Pete took Monica to Italy (or was it France?) for their first date. Even with millions of dollars how was this possible in a few hours?

Janice was perceived to be annoying. But actually other than the awful laugh and a complete inability to read the room... she was bloody lovely and a very good person to have as a friend. She gave good advice and I really liked her.

If Phoebe's brother Frank had been more mature and cut his hair he would have been really fit!

I'll probably think of others. For the record I LOVE the show I just like talking about it to other fans :-)

Paul Rudd is the most gorgeous man in the world.
Phoebe didn’t change because she didn’t need to.
I used to know Tom Selleck’s sister in law.

So annoying I posted a long reminiscence about several themes plus my take on Rachel & Joey & it said it posted but hasn't ...

A shorter version.... I watched lots of Friends episodes last night when I couldn't sleep (yay for Netflix instead of all the long at breaks in Comedy Central)

David Schwimmer as Ross is such a great comic actor - timing & facial expression are so good! Ross, however, is so problematic even for the time, in one episode he essentially breaks into Mona's apartment (they've broken up after his litany of lies & letting her think he loved her) to her his 'light salmon' coloured shirt, then he stays behind the couch listening to her get it on with her new boyfriend, and says when discovered: I was NOT touching myself, if that makes anyone feel less uncomfortable 🥺

Re Rachel & Joey rewatching those early scenes where he starts to fall for her, it's really well done & quite lovely, actually. The friendship part is really well played.

CandyLeBonBon · 15/04/2022 21:28

Monica and chandler were insufferable. I loved Mike. Rachel should have gone to Paris.

EarringsandLipstick · 15/04/2022 21:29

Paul Rudd is the most gorgeous man in the world.

I loved him as Mike. But I never ever get this view. He's .. ok. Pleasant looking!

And he is so weird looking now & speaks so oddly, whatever he's had done.

becarefuloutthere · 15/04/2022 21:37

@ItsPrettyObvious haha absolute love your rossssss caaaaannn response 😂 brilliant!! 👌🏾

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/04/2022 21:38

So glad to have a new friends thread. I'll read back over all the posts. But I wanted to add my two penneth without reminders of the show.

  1. Ross and Rachel didn't actually date for that long. Few months late s2 to mid s3. Fling to conceive Emma. Love declared by Ross when she boarded the plane. That's it.
  1. Ross was a poor father and a sub par boyfriend. He does, however, have the best scenes and is played very well by DS.
  1. Janice is under rated and low key bullied
  1. The triplet labour was unrealistic beyond all levels of acceptance.
  1. Monica got a hella lot of time off for being a fancy New York chef

wonder if Gunter kept the hairless cat?

(channels inner Joey)
'' Its not a cat! ''
Grin

Dontlickthetrolley · 15/04/2022 22:00

Joey in the background when they boys are in Chandlers office with the stripper and Ross shouting "Where's my ring, my dead grandmother's ring??"

Rachel when Danny Di Vito is stripping is another that always makes me laugh and definitely Rachel when Phoebe is singing along to the bagpipes. I wonder how many takes that took. (although I have seen some outtakes)

In some places it was very advanced, when Chadler bought Joey plastic Spoons to stop him licking the metal ones and putting it back in the drawer and Joe's response was that they're not good for the environment.

Series 1 hasn't dated very well and I struggle to watch it, but from about series 3, I can drop in and out of episodes quite happily!!

queenrollo · 15/04/2022 22:04

I never got into it when it was on originally and the few times I tried to watch it I found Rachel such a whiny and entitled character that it put me off.
I made a promise to myself this year that I will watch it all. I am currently halfway through Season 5 and honestly I just find Rachel has so many unlikeable traits. Does she really redeem herself?

I agree with other comments about Phoebe having a bit of a mean streak.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 15/04/2022 22:05

Ross was a poor father and a sub par boyfriend.
Was he a poor father?
He was always there for both his kids.
Agree with the fact he was an absolutely shit boyfriend though!
Jealous, controlling with Rachel
Cheated on Bonnie
Treated Mona like crap (standing her up, giving her keys then changing the locks etc)
Yeah he was a knob lol

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/04/2022 22:07

@YouLando

I love the scene where Ross plays the bagpipes to the tune of 'Celebrate' by Kool & The Gang, and Phoebe sings along - "ee ee ee ee ee eeee eeee" 🤣 you can see Jennifer Aniston corpsing
My absoloute favourite scene
GoodJanetBadJanet · 15/04/2022 22:08

You need to get a life

Rossssss Caaaaannnn!!!!!

🤣😂 Totally just sang instead of read that

Dontlickthetrolley · 15/04/2022 22:09

Someone asked about Friends the Musical, it is very funny, as long as you can get past the out of sync running order of some of it!!!

You need to get a life

so weird. A life including fond memories of a favourite tv show doesn’t seem that bad to me

BurgerKingAddict · 15/04/2022 22:12

@Sponge19

You need to get a life
No. You need to watch Friends and realise HOW COOL WE ALL ARE.
Cocolapew · 15/04/2022 22:13

The scene when Ross is running from two women he mistook for Phoebe and Rachel. He stops dead when he spots them sat in central perk. Great comic timing
This is my favourite scene from Friends, it cracks me up every time I've seen it.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 15/04/2022 22:14

Unagi!
Ah, salmon skin roll

mothertrucking · 15/04/2022 22:17

Too many favourite episodes to know which is my favourite.

Phoebe running with Rachel
Phoebe learning to ride a bike
Ross and Rachel take Emma to the swings
Ross leather pants
Ross's teeth
Ross's tan
Unagi

Ross wasn't even my favourite character he just got the best storylines

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 15/04/2022 22:17

Behalf.....as in I be hafing it....
Joey doesn't share food..
Could I be wearing anymore clothes..

All stupid things that make me smile.

I feel the writers did Joey dirty, he started out as a ladies man etc but I feel they let him have moments of 'grown upness' but then dumb him right back down and he didn't get a proper ending like the others.

TeamSpike · 15/04/2022 22:25

Ah my people! I've watched friends from start to finish hundreds of times.

I love Monica and chandler. I want someone like chandler to marry! Equally with Paul rudd. Ross is my least fav character but agree he is a great comic actor.

Another inconsistency is that Rachel's pregnant for over a year. Monica and chandler get married on 15th May and Rachel's pregnant. Then when she's overdue she comments that it's 100 degrees outside so I'm assuming that would be summer the year after.
Also when M and C are talking about the couple they met in their honeymoon "Greg and Jenny" (in phoebe's voice) they call them at the end and they say they're going to meet on January 15th! 8 months after the wedding 🤷‍♀️

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/04/2022 22:28

@Xpologog

Paul Rudd is the most gorgeous man in the world. Phoebe didn’t change because she didn’t need to. I used to know Tom Selleck’s sister in law.
Have you seen Object of My Affection? Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston in the early Friends years and the love between them 《chefs kiss》

My all time favourite movie.

womaniswomaniswoman · 15/04/2022 22:33

I hated the last episode and Ross and Rachel ending up together.

Remember their first kiss, he's her lobster, etc. That felt quite right and real. Then ending up together just felt lazy and like she was too tired to not go back to him.

It was a depressing end for Rachel.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/04/2022 22:35

Was he a poor father?
He was always there for both his kids

My thoughts:-

  • Ben wasn't at his wedding to Emily, nor did they meet, it seems.

  • Whenever Ross looked after Ben, it was always at Monica's, with help.

  • Ben and Emma never appear to meet.

  • when Rachel got the job in Paris, he said he couldn't bear her to be away from him. No mention of Emma.

  • He freaks at Bean wanting a doll and Rachel wanting a male nanny.
