I like Starmer but some of his prominent MPs are appalling. That makes me nervous about voting Labour

And some are very very good. Yvette Cooper, Wes Streeting etc. And David Lammy, a good orator, who has to put up with endless racism, yesterday was appalling.

Cornettoninja · 22/04/2022 12:55

I see where you’re coming from @derxa.

Labour have a lot to sort out and prove, but I must have slept well last night because I’m being an optimist today and hoping these past few months (at least) have put a lot of politicians of all colours on their toes and reminded them of the job they’re there to do. It’d be a crying shame if they all fall back on ‘at least I’m not Boris’. I hope that won’t happen and they’ll be under more scrutiny for quite a while I imagine.

I’m not naive enough to think partygate would have gone anywhere without pushing from fairly powerful sections of politics and the media, hell the last six years evidence this too, but, it also shows that this country does still have a deep seated sense of fairness or they wouldn’t have been able to rally it.

Blossomtoes · 22/04/2022 12:56

It was always obvious Johnson would ultimately be the author of his own misfortune. The attempt to prorogue Parliament was the first indication of the way it was going - and removing the whip from everyone sensible. His ego was always going to be his downfall.

Lammy is one of the MPs I can't stand.

Roussette · 22/04/2022 13:08

Lammy is one of the MPs I can't stand

Why?
His constituents love him, he got over 76% of the vote in 2019.

When he speaks in the HoC he is really worth listening to.

Blossomtoes · 22/04/2022 13:12

Indeed @Roussette. Same goes for Diane Abbott - one of the biggest majorities in the country and one of the most maligned MPs ever.

Ah, I see why some people don't like him.

Roussette · 22/04/2022 13:23

Blossom yes I do wonder why.

I have a lot of time for Diane Abbott. Her achievement record is extraordinary, 35 years as an MP, and she also receives a lot of abuse

I think Diane Abbott is terrific. How she's kept going I can't imagine.

Disgusting things such as this is what Lammy has to put up with.

Piggywaspushed · 22/04/2022 14:02

Wes Streeting didn't do a very good job yesterday on the smacking debate on the day of the verdict into another abused child's death. However, Zahawi was even worse on that score.

Piggywaspushed · 22/04/2022 14:05

Corbyn has a large majority too and his constituents are very fond of him. Jus' sayin'...

You're right it is disgusting Lammy however thinks that some women are 'rights hoarding dinosaurs' and he's not sure whether only women have cervixes. I don't understand why

cantkeepawayforever · 22/04/2022 14:22

Cake in the staffroom - yes, the occasional box of biscuits or cake were brought in and left in the different rooms that were used for different groups to be able to boil a kettle. People could take a biscuit or a slice of cake as they came in individually on their staggered breaks.

No groups, no parties.

We did have takeaways on the very last day of summer term 2021 (post lockdown, but still restrictions). Socially distanced outdoor picnic blankets were the order of the day.

Nice bit of whataboutery there derxa

Roussette · 22/04/2022 14:54

You're right it is disgusting Lammy however thinks...

You need a full stop after 'disgusting'. You cannot possibly conflate the two

Sorry you're right. It looks like I am conflating the two with that punctuation.
The Labour party have got themselves into a complete mess in this issue. Lammy is an intelligent person. Does he really think who are not natal women have cervixes? And of course women who don't share his belief are subject to the most horrific abuse including Joanna Cherry SNP MP.

Not really got one other than 'but Corbyn'...

"Breaking: Hearing that police fines are landing into people’s inboxes relating to the garden event on May 20th 2020 - the BYOB event - that Boris Johnson did go to. Met police say they won’t update until end of election period"

twitter.com/anushkaasthana/status/1517519419987136512?s=21&t=cBzEV8FJlW3cLvIu8xQIsA

So the question is will Johnson receive one and will we be informed by Number 10 (as previously promised)?

Notonthestairs · 22/04/2022 16:39

"It was confirmed by the PM's spokesman again this morning that it would be made public if he did.

This is after the Met Police said there would be no further updates before the May elections"

twitter.com/tamcohen/status/1517525598339543041?s=21&t=cBzEV8FJlW3cLvIu8xQIsA

I think the 20th May party was the garden party drinks - so it is likely there were a lot of FPNS issued.

ancientgran · 22/04/2022 16:50

Is that the garden party we saw photos of with Carrie Johnson sitting next to him or another one. I've got totally confused with them now.

Notonthestairs · 22/04/2022 17:02

The photo of the patio cheese and wine meeting was on 15th May.

20th May was the BYOB event organised by Martin Reynolds (aide to Johnson) to enjoy the weather. 100 invited, 40 attended including Johnson and Carrie Johnson.
At the time we were able to meet one other person outside provided we remained 2 metres apart (Rule of 6 outside came a month later).

Roussette · 22/04/2022 17:09

I think that was the one, yes. She was either holding Wilf or their pet dog! And there was a trestle table with drinks, wine and cheese.

Again this will be justified as a work meeting no doubt, and an extension of the office. Yeah right....

On that day little Matty Hancock had given a 5pm press conference urging people to stick to the rules and not take advantage of the good weather over the May weekend to socialise in groups
