Boris has been fined - Tory voters, should he go?

NewYorker80 · 12/04/2022 13:43

Both Johnson and Sunak have received fines for the lockdown parties. No further details as yet.

Do any Conservative voters here think Boris should resign?

Thanks for the BBC link Rousette - pasting that in for anyone in a hurry because… Shock

Could there be many more fines to come?
Danny Shaw, a former BBC home affairs correspondent who is now a commentor on crime and policing, points out the fixed penalty notices appear to be issued by the police in chronological order.

He notes one of the first batch of people to receive notice of a fine was former government ethics chief Helen McNamara, reportedly for attending a leaving do on 18 June 2020.

Boris Johnson has been fined for his birthday party on 19 June 2020, we've learned today.

Shaw says the 30 fixed penalty referrals announced today correspond with the number of people who reportedly attended the birthday party.

"There are 10 other gatherings under police investigation. Fifty other people were sent questionnaires. Fines will keep on coming - for weeks," he concludes.

@LookNorthbyNorthWest not relevant to the thread but the eu with uk in would not of been a bigger deterrent , they are still working together on things like this

Roussette · 12/04/2022 22:27

@DowningStreetParty
Thanks, on my phone and couldn't!

knowinglesseveryday · 12/04/2022 22:35

He obviously should go.

cakeorwine · 12/04/2022 22:35

Maybe more....from the Mail

Boris Johnson is believed to have attended at least six illegal parties investigated by the Met, meaning his fine - announced today - could have been for any one or even all of them.

These include his 56th birthday party in the Cabinet Room in June 2020 where, in the words of one Tory MP, he was 'ambushed by a cake'.

Embattled Chancellor Rishi attended the gathering as did the PM's wife, Carrie, who were also both fined today. The Met has still not revealed which events their fixed penalty notices were for.

Downing Street are said to have held 'wine-time Fridays' every week throughout the pandemic which Mr Johnson attended, with staff even investing in a £142 drinks fridge to keep their beer, prosecco and wine cold.

DowningStreetParty · 12/04/2022 22:36

Rousette I think that weeks of these fines being issued will (rightly) really undermine the bravado that the ‘loyal’ types are falling back on today to try to defend the PM.
He’s just not the asset that some MPs in his party seem to think he is. Boris Johnson broke the law, in office. It’s totally unacceptable.

worriedatthistime · 12/04/2022 22:39

@cakeorwine seems like a lot has come out since he left
Would of been better if this had all come out at the time
Guess we need to wait and see what else is to come , but you would of thought if there is more then they would be looking over their shoulders more
I can see sunak going before boris though

knowinglesseveryday · 12/04/2022 22:39

@NewYorker80

* NewYorker80 Boris is literally the only person in the entire world who is benefitting from the war in Ukraine. Sickening. Sickening comment. Absolutely appalling.

Er..... excuse me? Yes it IS sickening and appalling actually, that he is rinsing this war to boost his image and as an excuse to avoid facing up to his actions, when otherwise he would so clearly have been forced to resign.

Yep.

And the wine time Fridays in a pandemic full of lockdowns. It's like the court of Louis iv and Marie Antoinette. Let them not meet!

worriedatthistime · 12/04/2022 22:41

@cakeorwine surely you wouldn't get one fine if all 6 were breaking the rules
He seems to imply was the birthday cake one

Classic Dom.

He is a fan of the Art of War. Right now, the Conservatives are damaging themselves.

I feel for other people who resigned over breaking Covid rules such as Neil Ferguson.

Remember what was said:

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said it was "extraordinary" and that he "took the right decision to resign".

He told Sky News that it was "just not possible" for Prof Ferguson to continue advising the government.

Mr Hancock said the social distancing rules "are there for everyone" and are "deadly serious".

Scotland Yard said Prof Ferguson's behaviour was "plainly disappointing" but officers "do not intend to take any further action".

No 10 said the prime minister agreed with his decision to resign but Prof Ferguson was not told to do so and made the decision himself.

"Social distancing regulations are there for a very clear purpose," the prime minister's spokesman added

Grantanow · 12/04/2022 22:46

No matter how many FPNs he gets he won't go. And Tory MPs know he's their only hope next General Election so they are unlikely to push him out. Our only short term hope is that he needs more income and goes back to journalism - perhaps Carrie could spend a bit more!

That was the Mail. Clearly the person who wrote that hasn't read the front page of the Mail that is coming out tomorrow.

UnCivil · 12/04/2022 22:51

@cakeorwine

But... the No 10 parties didn't cause the misery because noone knew about them until fairly recently

I wonder if people in Number 10 looked at the news and saw the fines people were getting. The hassle from police. Going for a walk in the Peak District and getting fined. Sitting on a bench.

Did they notice Priti Patel saying people should snitch on their neighbours for parties?

Did they notice how the Daily Mail called people Covidiots?

Did they ever think that their parties and gatherings (of which there were quite a few) might look bad?

Or did they think "All people are equal but some are more equal than others"?

@cakeorwine have you ever read the letter that Stanley Johnson received from one of Boris’ teachers?

“Boris really has adopted a disgracefully cavalier attitude to his classical studies . . . Boris sometimes seems affronted when criticised for what amounts to a gross failure of responsibility (and surprised at the same time that he was not appointed Captain of the School for next half): I think he honestly believes that it is churlish of us not to regard him as an exception, one who should be free of the network of obligation which binds everyone else.”

freebritknee · 12/04/2022 22:57

He could chop off Carrie's big toe whilst she's sleeping and he still wouldn't go.

IamTheEvilPea · 12/04/2022 23:25

@DGRossetti

And he lied to Parliament.

And the Queen. Which speaking as a staunch royalist is reason enough for him to go whatever other peccadilloes he may have accrued.

He lied to the Queen before the last general election even and was found guilty in court of illegally proroguing Parliament! Him breaking the law is nothing new.

Yes, the Ministerial Code is crystal clear that any Minister who misleads Parliament should resign.

I do, however, find it highly amusing that somebody who lied to the country to get it to commit the biggest act of pointless self-harm for zero gain that any modern democracy has ever made, and lied to the Monarch, and illegally suspended our democratic systems, the country still re-elected. And the hill that the British public decide to die on as a step too far is an illegal party.

Yes it's reprehensible. But everything he's done for years is reprehensible! His head should have been on a spike outside the Tower (metaphorically speaking, perhaps...) years ago.

IamTheEvilPea · 12/04/2022 23:28

@littledrummergirl

He should have gone months ago.
He should never have been in this position in the first place. That was obvious at the time.
IamTheEvilPea · 12/04/2022 23:34

@Mischance

We cannot have a PM who breaks the law - so he should go. Hopefully many Tory MPs will give him a not-so-gentle nudge.
We have had a PM for who was found guilty in a court of law years ago for illegally suspending our elected Parliament to push through his political agenda. This is not new.
kickupafuss · 12/04/2022 23:35

I have written to my Tory MP so I'm looking forward to hearing what he thinks. Can't believe the war in Ukraine is being cited as a reason for him stay - disgraceful.

littledrummergirl · 12/04/2022 23:44

I wrote to mine as well. I haven't had a response to my last letter so kept this one simple.

I asked if they have confidence in the government. If I don't hear anything this time then I'll know where she stands and I'll be doing everything I can to make the lack of response known.

UnCivil · 12/04/2022 23:46

I suspect that the people who didn’t care about his previous lies are the ones downplaying his latest serial lying. They convinced themselves that his lack of morality didn’t matter as long as he got Brexit done Hmm

To keep up the pretence they have to keep supporting him

mmmmmmghturep · 12/04/2022 23:48

I wasnt affected by the horrendous things some have been through like not being able to go to a funeral or giving birth alone. But the psychological abuse dished out by the Government and sorry but its a fact ( some of the NHS) and on the Covid board on here was disgusting. The "look them in the eyes" crap Abusive. Being TOLD that visiting my TWO relatives in their home on Christmas Day was basically the same as going to an all night rave was ridiculous and abusive. All emotional blackmail. Its really made me realise how many coercively controlling abusers walk amongst us. It has also caused a major shift in my personal life which i cant talk about on here. Going through this many of us wernt even allowed the space to talk about it on here. Were called Covid deniers and got deleted. Im double vaxxed. But some people confused Covid denial with anti lockdown and conflated the two deliberately. Lets hope no one decides to put their head above the parapet and remind certain quarters of this should MN enter any future partnership with any mental health organisation.
