Boris has been fined - Tory voters, should he go?

NewYorker80 · 12/04/2022 13:43

Both Johnson and Sunak have received fines for the lockdown parties. No further details as yet.

Do any Conservative voters here think Boris should resign?

Any Conservative MP with integrity (and there will be some) should be declaring that they have no confidence in him and should be pushing for his resignation.

I agree, and it will be interesting to see how many Tory MPs with integrity there are.

RomansTheyGoTheHouse · 12/04/2022 15:54

I am not sure how we can have a Prime Minister (from any party) whose constant words can never be trusted - because he lies so often and so much.

It is trickling down so they everyone under him is lying, and everyone under them - and so on. Lying has become the go-to strategy for so many and we need a leader who will reset the expected level of behaviour.

Piggywaspushed · 12/04/2022 15:54

Can I just say again that I did not break lockdown rules. I know many people who didn't. And I know lots of people that think Boris is a complete arse. And are appalled by him. Including Tories.

Different circles I guess...

@Brideandprejudice

I voted for Johnson and would again. I don't care about him being fined if I'm being totally honest.
Jesus bids us shine!

He has lied to the electorate and to Parliament about the parties and attendance at same
He has lied to the electorate (or probably more accurately, refused to disclose all of the facts) about Brexit but he had to 'get it done'.
He has brought the office of PM into disrepute
He is a buffoon of the highest order (he is regularly mocked on the international stage)

Yet you would vote for him again????

You get what you deserve if you do!

Sheeple.

walkersareback · 12/04/2022 15:54

And the reason the parties seem so long ago is that they have denied, lied and done everything to push the issue in to the long grass - and sadly it appears to have worked

Roussette · 12/04/2022 15:55

I think people who were unable to see their relatives in their dying days while Boris and his pals were partying the whole time, think it's extremely important

Yes. There's some footage out there of a woman who's travelled 300 miles to tell her story outside of Parliament.

She feels SO SO GUILTY that she abided by the rules. She didn't see her sister as she died.
I imagine guilt is what these poor people are feeling. To do the right thing and wish they hadn't.

Because of the liars in this Government

Piggywaspushed · 12/04/2022 15:55

Unfortunately we get what they deserve too.

CarmenThePanda · 12/04/2022 15:55

He broke the law
He lied in parliament.

It isn’t a matter of horse trading good points v bad. Presumably he was representing the government in Ukraine, so can be replaced by someone else. Ditto decision making.

He is a liar and a law breaker.

He thinks he can lead a country while playing fast and loose with the law. Have his Queen sit alone at a funeral while he has the careless arrogance to party.

He has no respect for the people who elected him. Or for our constitution. That is serious.

rainingsnoring · 12/04/2022 15:55

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats

I've come to the conclusion that if Boris Johnson had been caught buggering Prince Philip's corpse in St George's chapel, then Tory supporters here would claim that a Labour leader would have done so twice.
I agree! It's a sad state of affairs when the main defence of the Tories is to attack Labour.
derxa · 12/04/2022 15:56

Here is the footage of Sunak in parliament saying he did not attend any parties. I honestly don't believe many of these gatherings were 'parties ' as most of us understand the word. I find Partygate to be a pathetic witch hunt.

Having said all that, I'd be happier with a new Cabinet consisting of people with integrity. Let's have a clear out.

MoggyCentral · 12/04/2022 15:56

@MedusasBadHairDay

It blows my mind that people are happy to accept a prime minister who breaks the law, then lies about it both to the electorate and in Parliament. A man who thinks he's above the law, and holds the British public in such low regard.

Utterly madness.

I understand that a Tory voter won't want Labour in power, makes sense, but that they don't even want him kicked out and replaced with a different Tory? Do they think so little of their party that they think Boris is the best they've got?!

I like him.
SamWidges · 12/04/2022 15:56

Just emailed my (Conservative) MP, Paul Holmes, to ask him whether he will be urging Johnson and any other MPs caught breaking the law to resign with immediate effect, especially given that he (Johnson) lied to Parliament several times over the matter.

TibetanTerrah · 12/04/2022 15:57

Any Conservative MP with integrity (and there will be some) should be declaring that they have no confidence in him and should be pushing for his resignation.

The MP for where I used to live was one of the first/the first to start the ball rolling with this when it all came out. However he's now publicly said that 'now is not the time' because of Ukraine as well as cost of living crisis etc. He says there will be 'a day of reckoning' and that justice should be deferred not denied completely.

Roger Gale has frequently spoken out against Johnson, and I do like him, and on one hand I think he has a point. On the other, Johnson is like fucking teflon and the timing of all of this is, yet again, perfect for him so that he can get away with another scandal.

walkersareback · 12/04/2022 15:58

I want him to sort out the NHS, make additional rate tax higher and windfall tax any French owned energy firms.

But he is not going to do that is he?

Franklin12 · 12/04/2022 15:58

Alex - but they havent learned a thing about winning. They dont seem to want to. They are digging deeper and deeper holes for themselves and come the election they will become unstuck. Do you honestly think that Labour as it is now (no Corbyn!) would have any chance of winning any sort of majority any time soon? Are they preparing themselves as the party to beat the Tories?

It should be easy for them and yet they spoil it for themselves all the time. I strongly suspect they are in a massive echo chamber where they agree with all the woke, right on ideas with no understanding of whether they are winning ideas. And as I have said many times. THAT SUITS THEM JUST FINE.

Abhannmor · 12/04/2022 15:58

Why would Tory voters think he should go ? He was elected because they thought he was some posh Arthur Daley who could get rid of foreigners and somehow wangle a pain free Brexit. Partly because he's as bent as a butcher's hook. OK it didn't work. But he's still the only game in town if you're a Tory.

MoggyCentral · 12/04/2022 15:58

@walkersareback

And the reason the parties seem so long ago is that they have denied, lied and done everything to push the issue in to the long grass - and sadly it appears to have worked
Yeah, I think that's it. It was so long ago and it was a party with people he worked with every day.
sobeyondthehills · 12/04/2022 15:58

@JinglingHellsBells

I don't vote Tory but neither do I see this as a resigning matter.

What's ironic is that all over lockdown, this forum was full of posters saying they were ignoring the rules and carrying on partying. I lost count of people openly admitting they were not following lockdown rules.

I wonder where they are now?

But they are not the ones who made the rules, who spouted, that we were all in the same boat, they certainly didn't deny breaking the rules on a number of occasions.
SueSaid · 12/04/2022 15:58

I cannot believe we've been told they've been given FPNs but no context.

So we've no idea if it was the 10mins in the Cabinet Office eating cake or a 5 hour party in the flat with friends and family.

It matters! The first not a resigning matter the second yes. Sunak was even asked if he'd attended a party and he said no so he was clearly oblivious that he was at a 'party'.

These FPNs may well not be worth the paper they're written on.

Cornettoninja · 12/04/2022 15:59

@deliciouschilli

Most people I know don't give a toss that he went to a party or that he has been fined. They all broke lockdown rules in one way or another and there were lots of lockdown parties in gardens and houses round here. I'm sure he will face calls to resign but I don't think this will be enough.
Again, so what?

I know people who’ve broken the law, some of them even lost jobs over it, heck I can point to cases where people have broken precisely zero laws and lost their jobs over public behaviour like Facebook and Twitter posts - why is Boris so special? I’m completely missing what makes him the best prime minister we’ve ever had that entitles him to such a privilege?

ddl1 · 12/04/2022 15:59

Terrible to think this way, but who'd we get instead? Especially now that Sunak is presumably ruled out. Patel? Rees Mogg? Gove? Ugh ugh ugh,

AlexaShutUp · 12/04/2022 15:59

Blows my mind, too @MedusasBadHairDay. It's depressing that so many people think that expecting our leaders to tell the truth to parliament and abide by the law is setting the bar too high.

I find myself wondering if these people lack any integrity themselves, and whether that's why they don't expect to see basic integrity in their politicians. I can't imagine why anyone with any sort of moral compass would find this kind of behaviour even vaguely acceptable.

As for all of the people saying that everyone broke lockdown rules...well, actually, no they didn't, but even if they did, I would expect those who were actually responsible for making the rules to be a setting an example and adhering to higher standards than the rest of us. Not sinking below...

sobeyondthehills · 12/04/2022 16:00

@GottaLoveTheCold

He is sorting the NHS by selling it bit by bit, so there isn't one he has to worry about

SpinningMeSoftly · 12/04/2022 16:00

He lied to Parliament.

For that, he needs to resign.

LookItsMeAgain · 12/04/2022 16:00

@Piggywaspushed

Unfortunately we get what they deserve too.
I realise this and I think that is grossly unfair!
