And I want every woman of faith (any faith) or no faith to do the same if that fucker wins Angry

(Marine le Bastard is saying women are not allowed to wear head scarves in France and that they will be fined)

It will certainly reset relations in a good way between UK and France, which would be very very welcome.

tara66 · 07/04/2022 19:20

I read she also has photo of herself with Putin on some of her pamphlets.

Swayingpalmtrees · 07/04/2022 19:21

You are missing the bigger picture laurie with respect, France are trying to liberate women in the sense that many DO NOT have the choice not to wear them. They are forced to by their family and by their husbands. It is a strong line, but it is one they have chosen.

Undecicive · 07/04/2022 19:21

I have been part of a religious group that 'suggested' covering your hair. It may not come as a direct instruction, it's subtle hints and coercion and for me they'll always be a sign of oppression.

seriousandloyal · 07/04/2022 19:23

Have a look at My Stealthy Freedom which is women in Iran facing real oppression.
Why would you say women wear headscarves or burkas? Is it because of male oppressive family pressure from a very young age? Or a genuine free choice? Should the state interpose itself to ban this in public places so that women from all backgrounds know that it is not a normal thing to ask of them in their formative years? Lots to think about.

Swayingpalmtrees · 07/04/2022 19:23

Of course she did Tara Hmm

You will have to try harder than that

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 07/04/2022 19:25

@Swayingpalmtrees

Additionally they do not allow religious symbols, and things like veils etc in France it is considered to be oppression. I don't agree with it, as it takes away personal choice, but I can see why they don't want little girls in school wearing them. They are restrictive.

Le Pen looks like Mother Theresa compared to the alternative runner, Eric Zemmour. France have always been rebellious, this has been brewing for years.

They don't not allow religious symbols everywhere in public though.
Viviennemary · 07/04/2022 19:25

I think it's a good call. Children of five in schools wearing headscarves. Ridiculous.

Parkingt111 · 07/04/2022 19:25

@swayingpalmtrees I have never heard such blatant stereotyping , as a hijab wearing woman it is my own choice and decision to wear it
I cant believe some of the comments
it is absolutely outrageous that a country like france would even propose such a law

Swayingpalmtrees · 07/04/2022 19:27

My friends in the middle east are forced to wear them outside, and walk behind their husbands but once inside they whip them off and are themselves in skinny jeans etc. You are severely underestimating the issue of 'choice' when it comes to burkas/scarves and veils. Women have died from heat exposure wearing burkas and still the continue to have to wear them in 50c heat, they are supremely uncomfortable and unpleasant.

I find your comment very flippant, this is a real issue for some women and oppression is not a laughing matter.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/04/2022 19:28

Striped tee-shirt, beret and baguette under my arm for me.

Swayingpalmtrees · 07/04/2022 19:29

parking How come you do not know that hijabs were banned in 2011? It not only proposed the law, but followed through with a total ban.

Swayingpalmtrees · 07/04/2022 19:29

And perhaps a decent bottle or wine or two from Provence twoleft Wine

Frenchfancy · 07/04/2022 19:29

@swayingpalmtrees @tara66 is right. Le Pen did print millions of leaflets with a photo of her and Putin. They all had to go in the bin. She has been a big fan of his for many years.

JellybeansJelly · 07/04/2022 19:31

Yes, let’s continue telling women what they can and can’t do…

Those who agree with the ban are as bad as those who force women to wear them. You’re still deciding what other women can and should do.

Swayingpalmtrees · 07/04/2022 19:32

Well I am sure she isn't anymore! frenchfancy Many were fans of Putin up until a month ago including the former President of the US

Swayingpalmtrees · 07/04/2022 19:33

Why should they be the exception to the secular rule of no religious symbols Jelly?

LaurieFairyCake · 07/04/2022 19:35

Swayingpalmtrees

That fascist is not trying to LIBERATE anyone, she's trying to exclude Muslims from France - this is a policy born in racism and hatred

I disagree with women being FORCED to wear headscarves (and of course some women are forced to) but telling them they're not allowed to is HORRIFIC

There is a world of grey area between fascism/racism and the desire to empower women

OP posts:
LolaStrange · 07/04/2022 19:35

That's crazy. Headscarves are part of loads of cultures. For religious or fashion reasons.

I don't like the idea of a religion dictating that women and girls should cover up but you also can't dictate that they can't cover up

Lesperance · 07/04/2022 19:35

@Swayingpalmtrees

Of course she did Tara Hmm

You will have to try harder than that

I don't understand your comment. This is true, she had photos of herself with Putin. From when they met. In the current context, it's a bit embarrassing.
veronicagoldberg · 07/04/2022 19:35

It goes for Orthodox Jewish women too.

JellybeansJelly · 07/04/2022 19:37

@Swayingpalmtrees

Why should they be the exception to the secular rule of no religious symbols Jelly?
Religious symbols are banned in schools, government buildings, etc. That’s fine.

But to ban it in the street? Where’s the freedom there? Why focus on only Muslims?

Franklyfrost · 07/04/2022 19:37

If I was running a country I would consider banning head scarves as a symbolic gesture because they are strongly connected to a culture of oppressing, controlling and shaming women. To be a truest secular state is an ideal which many French people consider a more important than not repressing women who chose to wear a headscarf as an indicator of their faith. Lots of Jewish women cover their heads without demonstrating their faith to others.

FOJN · 07/04/2022 19:38

Interesting to see French Vogue celebrating a white woman wearing a headscarf as a fashion statement. I don't think Le Pen will win but I'm not at all surprised RN have gained ground. I think since the Greek debt crisis there have been signs that many European countries are flirting with more right wing politics. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't go too far.
