I don't know how to tag my last thread. Having people from Ukraine staying.
Ours guests arrived yesterday afternoon. 2 mums (sisters) with a toddler each.

The reason I'm crying is this afternoon a delivery was made by someone in our area
of a toddler sized slide and a swing. Some gift cards and letters were posted through our letter box
welcoming them to our town.
All anonymous. I think it might be people from our street(it's quite a long one) so can't narrow it down.

That’s lovely OP. We live in a village in Switzerland (around 2,500 people) which, during the 2017 migrant crisis had a very right wing local government and became famous for voting against taking its quota of refugees and choosing to pay a fee instead. International newspapers named it the most racist village in the world 😞. In contrast, I was delighted to read in our local paper last week that some administrative rooms in the local fire station have been changed into temporary accommodation and two Ukranian families with children are now being housed there. An appeal for furniture, fixtures and fittings and toys for the kids was fulfilled within the village within 24 hours! What a difference 5 years makes! Yesterday we met a lovely Ukranian lady with her father and three-year-old son whilst we were out sledging, they had arrived here 10 days ago and we’re being loaned an apartment by a friend of theirs who has temporarily moved back in with his mother so they have somewhere to live. We leant them a sledge and they came over for a play date this afternoon noon with DS (also 3) and our downstairs neighbours kids who are also Ukranian. It was a crazy afternoon filled with the noise of happy kids!

This is just the nicest thing I've heard today, how lovely?!

inacuppa · 03/04/2022 20:44

How lovely, thank you for sharing. Some faith in humanity!

mumda · 03/04/2022 20:53

I think someone must have chopped an onion near here.

@SeasonFinale

We are hosting an 18 year old Ukrainian and being Cambridge based someone has donated a lovely bike for them to use. People are helping in whatever way they can and it is great.
If you’d like any clothes/coats (good quality, obvs), please pm me, as I’m your way. If there’s a need for Rnglish lessons, please also let me know (Secondary teacher with dbs etc)

I salute you and your wonderful neighbours.

It’s a team effort.

You will have inspired others.

So many people want to help and support - after the deepening atrocities coming to light it is a relief to hear of such compassion, warmth and generosity.

Thank you for sharing. You should take this to your local media or social media to keep the hope alive.

Irony of typo not lost on me, btw. Happy thread!

I am pleased your community are supporting you OP.

I have worked with refugees, and the trauma is immense. Many are still rigid with fear for husbands, friends and family. Wondering if their homes and lives back home are destroyed. Amidst the welcome and kindness like can be disorienting and bewildering. Grief and trauma. Our staff and supporters learned not to ask detailed questions especially in an ‘oh wow’ kind of way. They may need sheltering.

It’s good they are together.

Well done OP best wishes to all of you.

Please think twice before drawing any attention to the women and children themselves though.

Have you got a community Facebook group. You could thank the anonymous donors through that maybe.

God no. Those poor women and kids have been through enough without that sort of spotlight shone on them.

This is, by a million miles, the NICEST thing I have ever read on Mumsnet.

You are so kind and thoughtful and so are the people who offered these lovely cards and gifts.

I hope you enjoy your time with your visitors. Offering them a safe place must feel wonderful Flowers
