New footage of Jada Pinket Smith laughing

Sorry know this has been done to death and probably people losing interest but-

Anybody see the mobile phone footage of slapgate filmed from behind the Smiths that was broadcast on morning TV today?

I'm convinced it was an act now, she didn't bat an eye and just laughed. I wondered why there hadn't been a video of her reaction before now.

So everyone watched a man assault another man on stage and people are debating if it was staged? Seriously? These are two of the most famous comedians in America. They do not need publicity. As a Canadian, I can assure you everyone here knows who they are.
I find the fact people are doubting a man got assaulted despite seeing it, Will admitting it, Chris saying he is still processing it, to be shockingly ignorant.

Redcrayons · 01/04/2022 16:59

Grin Will Smith as past his best. He was 20 minutes away from winning the highest industry accolade he could receive from his peers.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/04/2022 17:00

@Meirou90

Would Will Smith really tarnish his entire career for an act? What would be his motivation in doing so - certainly not money as he had enough of it.
This. He was just about to win the Oscar (his positioning at the front supports this). Why would anyone ruin that moment with a bust up and foul language.
Soffit · 01/04/2022 17:10

He was winning an Oscar for a senior part. His prime was the Men In Black days
Chris Rock - wanted to widen his appeal to an international audience as this thread also proves that he is mainly known to people of a small age band who watch US TV shows
Jada - has been trying to re-gain relevance for a while which is why she filed a never-ending chat between three generations of her family.
The Academy - has been going one way for a long time and it's not good.
All four of the above - despite the success of Spiderman this year, the industry overall has suffered losses and expects to suffer hugely this/next year. Those mansions don't pay themselves and most Hollywood people (most of whom you will never have heard of) have been busy tapping into revenue streams all over the place because they know that they won't all get through it unscathed.

PuppyMonkey · 01/04/2022 17:16

I’ve never heard of Chris Rock, Will Smith, the Oscars or MN - do I win the thread? GrinWinkHmm

WrongWayApricot · 01/04/2022 17:17

@TheBigPeach

Not his first time slapping someone. In this case the reporter guy was very hands on.
You mean after being sexually assaulted? I'd slap someone that did that to me too.
Soffit · 01/04/2022 17:18

I appreciate that they exist in a world very different to your own but ffs, at least entertain the possibility that you may not know that much about how that giant business machine works and how actors might be bankrolled to do a bit more than switch your laugh/shock gears and provide fodder for your casual consumption of light entertainment.

It's almost like old bread and circuses has turned into Ezekiel bread and the Hollywood circus. Smh.

@Cornettoninja

Madonna’s averages just short of 11k hits per day

Tbf a lot of those are probably people born post 2000 wondering why she still makes it into the gossip columns.

(I’m old enough to remember pre-evita Madonna but she’s not really relevant to younger generations anymore. Much as she tries).

The fact she’s not as relevant as she was, decades on from her prime. yet generates the numbers (interest) she does, is testament to her legacy.

The Beatles the same.

These are giants of pop culture.

Freddie Mercury has been dead 30 years...there’s been Bieber, Timberlake and co since, yet Mercury dwarfs them as a figure in music.

Ultimately it’s legacy that is the true test of pop culture status. Being “big” now means diddly squat if you are forgotten in five years time.

Chris Rock has no legacy, nothing to remember him by (again, with the possible/likely exception of being on the receiving end of a slap). Billy Crystal presented umpteen Oscars ceremonies, yet he too is largely a footnote in pop culture.

EdenFlower · 01/04/2022 17:30

Jada is not claiming to have traction alopecia anyway- in the press she has claimed to have alopecia areata and that it started 'coming out in handfuls'

Hmm....

Yes to all of this. I'm a bit open mouthed about all the people thinking it's staged. Like most conspiracy theories it fails the why
knittingaddict · 01/04/2022 17:57

Sorry on phone and posted to soon.

Meant to say that it fails the why? test

No, because you’ve heard of Mumsnet so 🤷‍♀️ Too much in the Real World, I’m afraid.
LondonWolf · 01/04/2022 18:01

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

I'm bored of the whole thing. It was a stupid thing to do and I'm sure he regrets it. Surely something else is going on in the world?

Nope, this is literally the only thread on MN. There are no other threads about other events for you to read or post on. I've asked MNHQ if we could have, say, a series of long-running threads about the Ukraine invasion, or maybe a few threads about the cost of living crisis, but they said no. They only want one board, with one thread on it. Which is this one.

Also, there are no other talk websites other than MN.

Lol
PuppyMonkey · 01/04/2022 18:03

I said I’ve never heard of MN @Saucery Wink

HeadPain · 01/04/2022 18:03

Where’s the link?

KELLOGSspeck · 01/04/2022 18:13

@LizBennet

Chris Rock did well from it. I’d never heard of him until this.

Chris Rock was already well known. Kind of the reason he was hosting the show.

People had forgotten the show was even on. I bet the ratings have soon shot up.

No. What's a 'thread'? Grin
KELLOGSspeck · 01/04/2022 18:18

@GoodHairDay86

Could be a lie obviously but I've seen on Instagram a screenshot of the wife of one of the security at the oscars, she said they were all told about 4pm that there would be a scene between the 2 and they were not to intervene or react..

Sounds true to me as if it wasn't a stunt I believe security would have been all over Will!

I believe it was a stunt, let's be honest.. if it weren't for this happening most people wouldn't even know the Oscars had happened, the past few years it has been so dead

Exactly this. Where were security because when WS started to shout the lady behind looked uncomfortable. What were the security doing??? Waiting for WS to get up from his seat again.
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 01/04/2022 18:22

Chris Rock has no legacy, nothing to remember him by (again, with the possible/likely exception of being on the receiving end of a slap).

To me, Chris Rock is famous primarily for the extremely funny (but also horribly uncomfortable) 'N' routine.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2022 18:26

Bit scathing re Chris Rock in pp

He’s probably worth tens of millions, sure others will be more famous but it doesn’t sound too bad to me.

I always thought his white dentist joke was good and it stuck in my mind

BoredZelda · 01/04/2022 18:35

I think saying 'Jada, I love you – I can't wait for GI Jane 2.' is being verbally abusive is a real stretch

Making fun of a woman’s appearance on a globally televised show isn’t verbally abusive? What a low bar you shave for what is acceptable conduct.

BoredZelda · 01/04/2022 18:38

People had forgotten the show was even on. I bet the ratings have soon shot up.

Rubbish. It was well publicised, plenty of people tuned in, and even if people heard about it and then tuned in, if they weren’t people who wanted to watch the Oscar’s they would have soon tuned out again.

MakingShiteMemories · 01/04/2022 18:41

@AryaStarkWolf

I'd never heard of any of these people until now.

You hadn't heard of Will Smith even???? Whuuuuuuuuuuut

No, I hadn't.

But I don't have a TV and don't have any interest in films, and I have obviously heard of Will Smith now (and Chris Rock, whom I cba to Google - but when I asked my 20 yr old if he had heard of him, he said he "can be quite funny sometimes").

I'd be surprised by someone not having heard of Vladimir Jurowski or Andrew Manze, so I suppose it's just a question of what you're interested in and the kinds of things you read/listen to.

theDudesmummy · 01/04/2022 18:51

@MakingShiteMemories exactly! I did know Smith because I am a sci-fi fan so knew him from Men in Black, but no reason I would have known the others.

Saucery · 01/04/2022 18:57

Well, that takes the Biscuit. Billy Crystal as a FOOTNOTE?

Oi, Phyllis, I knew your brother, Franken.
