New footage of Jada Pinket Smith laughing

Sorry know this has been done to death and probably people losing interest but-

Anybody see the mobile phone footage of slapgate filmed from behind the Smiths that was broadcast on morning TV today?

I'm convinced it was an act now, she didn't bat an eye and just laughed. I wondered why there hadn't been a video of her reaction before now.

OP posts:
DoctorManhattan · 01/04/2022 14:18

I read the other day that Chris Rock had no idea she had alopecia, and he thought he was just making a fairly harmless joke about her buzz cut. Which kinda aligns with him saying (after the slap) that it was ‘just a GI Jane joke!’ And looking bewildered.

I had no idea she had alopecia either, her hair is closely shaved and it looks nothing like (for example) a sufferer like Gail Porter, whose head is completely smooth. I’m aware alopecia can vary in severity but just making the point that to someone who doesn’t have that knowledge, they wouldn’t know just by looking at her.

theDudesmummy · 01/04/2022 14:31

I really really don't believe it was an act. Two black men agreeing to play into unpleasant racial stereotypes, to their own reputational detriment (especially Smith)? I don't think that is likely.

To those people who are surprised that someone had not heard of Rock before, I hadn't either, to my knowledge (ie I could have seen his name but never registered). My DH most certainly had never even heard his name, he has no interest in that world at all. Neither of us had ever heard of Jada either. Not everyone is interested in the same things!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 01/04/2022 14:33

@midsomermurderess

I stand with Daniel Radcliffe on this.
I struggle to stand with Daniel Radcliffe over anything after JKR
LBFseBrom · 01/04/2022 14:38

@HellToTheNope

I couldn't possibly care less about any of this. Can the world move on now and give attention to issues that actually matter?
Yes! It's very 'yesterday's news' plus a few days.
Tilltheend99 · 01/04/2022 14:40

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon

It was all an act.

WS was laughing along with him and almost missed his cue, CR leaned in for the slap, WS walked away laughing, security were nowhere to be seen, it was a slap where a punch would’ve been more productive, CR stated that it was the greatest night in television which (a) it wasn’t, and (b) sounded like something he was trying to get hashtagged.

Chris Rock did well from it. I’d never heard of him until this.

Never heard of Chris Rock ?! I don’t believe it.
cherrysthename · 01/04/2022 14:42

Chris Rock wasn't hosting, just saying! He was presenting an award. He is extremely famous though.

What's the connection people are saying about the alopecia drug being allegedly trialled and it meaning the incident was staged? I don't get it.

notwavingbutdrowning5 · 01/04/2022 14:46

There are many threads on MN about more 'worthy' issues. In the past 24 hours, you have posted on exactly none of them. Would you like some help on how to find these threads, if you're struggling?

God, why on earth is everyone being so nasty to @HellToTheNope? The idea of threads is that people express an opinion. The opinion that this whole story has been going on too long is perfectly valid in the context of this thread – as indeed the OP makes clear in her post.

Did you really check all the other threads to see if HellToTheNope has posted on them, JesusintheCabbageVan? Seriously?

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

I'm bored of the whole thing. It was a stupid thing to do and I'm sure he regrets it. Surely something else is going on in the world?

Nope, this is literally the only thread on MN. There are no other threads about other events for you to read or post on. I've asked MNHQ if we could have, say, a series of long-running threads about the Ukraine invasion, or maybe a few threads about the cost of living crisis, but they said no. They only want one board, with one thread on it. Which is this one.

Also, there are no other talk websites other than MN.

There's no need to be a dick about it.

I just genuinely don't understand why the incident has garnered as much media attention as it did.

Yes, it was shocking, but not that outrageous. Why are people so fascinated by it?

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 01/04/2022 14:48

As a previous poster has pointed out, if it was staged there's absolutely no way Will Smith would have started roaring and swearing like that. This is America remember, so guns and porn = fine, dropping the 'f' bomb, (twice), on live TV = completely unacceptable.

Terfydactyl · 01/04/2022 14:50

@RJnomore1

The poor woman can’t do anything right can she?

Two men act like arseholes and yet again somehow it’s a woman at fault for not being compliant enough or looking after her hair correctly or breathing or something.

Ffs.

Absolutely, and worse a very common reaction to violence is laughter.
CapMarvel · 01/04/2022 14:52

Nobody benefits from it being staged.

Will Smith now looks like a dick. Why would he agree to it?

Chris Rock doesn't need the publicity, he's already a household name in America. Why would he agree to it?

The oscars are already suffering from an image problem so it doesn't help them either. Why would they agree to it?

MangyInseam · 01/04/2022 14:53

I tend not to think it was an act either, but she never did seem particularly upset. The whole thing is bizarre.

Redcrayons · 01/04/2022 14:53

You need an extra small Tin hat to get the Pfizer connection.
MangyInseam · 01/04/2022 14:59

@BowtieBling

I'm seeing a massive backlash against Jada over the last couple of days. There are a lot of posts shared on my social media from young lads and men about poor Will Smith whose career and reputation has now been irreparably damaged by a manipulative woman. Comments about toxic femininity. All seems very much like propaganda by incel types.
It's because a lot of people already had a low opinion of her. People are much more likely to give the benefit of the doubt to someone they have a good opinion of, and if they think the person is a liar or manipulative, they will tend to think the worst. Which isn't always fair but it's a pretty standard element of human nature.
UsernameIsNotAvailableRightNow · 01/04/2022 14:59

I'm about half way through Will Smiths book at the moment and that guy has some serious issues, he just hides them well. The good guy act is mostly to keep his late grandma happy by all accounts, she didn't agree with swear words being needed.

I doubt it's an act but I also think it's good marketing for his book.

Drinkingallthewine · 01/04/2022 15:05

There's no way a US televised event would have written a script for WS to use the F word.

To be honest it all looked like an in-joke up until WS sat back down and started swearing, even to the people sitting around them.

It's massively overshadowed his Oscar. But it's not the worst Oscars debacle, Seth McFarlane singing about boobs was awful, John Wayne being held back by 6 security staff from attacking Sacheen Littlefeather in 1973, the way Hattie McDaniel was treated, the standing ovation for Polanski when he won for the Pianist and adoration of Wienstien & Allen through the years are all just as unpalatable as this slap.

I loathe the roasting-style humour that US shows do, if you do it, it a) has to be very witty and b) aimed at someone who can take it on the chin and very few hosts manage that.

Lizzy1980 · 01/04/2022 15:05

@LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana

Helltothenope Why not ignore the post then?
This, though they wouldn’t get the opportunity to be quite so self righteous then would they. I love it when people comment on posts about subjects they don’t think there should even be posts about 🤣
Nancydrawn · 01/04/2022 15:06

As a PP said, Chris Rock wasn't hosting, he was presenting.

He's enormously famous in the US. Has been a cornerstone of the comedy scene since the early 90s. He's had numerous TV shows about him or based on him, including a sitcom based on his teenage years that ran for four seasons. Basically as famous as Adam Sandler, who's a close friend of his, I'd say.

The film clip didn't add anything for me.

It wasn't staged.

This is getting boring.

pisspants · 01/04/2022 15:13

I havent seen the footage, but if she was seen laughing maybe she was doing it as that is what is expected of you during comedy and she felt she couldn't show her true feelings. It doesnt mean she liked it. Maybe Will realised how badly the comment had affected her and felt he had to "protect her honour".
I don't think he should have reacted like that and it's such a shame it overshadowed his brilliant win later on. Feel so sad about the whole thing as have been a big Will S fan since the 90s and hope his career recovers from this. I think he's been a great role model until now which is good going seeing as he's been in the public eye for nearly 30 years.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 01/04/2022 15:16

God, no Grin I did a quick AS of threads she had posted on, none of which were remotely worthy.

Btw I know things like that are bad form. I also acknowledge (@TigerLilyTail) that my posts were quite sarky. Anyone who knows me will confirm I am indeed a dick when riled, but I try to only be a dick to other dicks.

The thing is, I've seen too many occasions recently where people seemingly post for the sole purpose of making the OP feel ashamed, or selfish, or shallow, purely for wanting to talk about a particular issue. There's just no need. It's especially hypocritical if the poster in question is merrily posting away on dozens of other threads that are even more trivial, without making any attempt to shut them down.

NancyDrooo · 01/04/2022 15:17

Intrigued to know how OP decided Jada “didn’t bat an eyelid” from grainy footage of the back of her head Grin

There’s no way it was staged. If it was, it wouldn’t have been so awkward, and the truth would’ve come out by now. And, like others have said, swearing on live television in the US is an absolute no no. Nothing to gain for any of them, not least for Smith on the night he won his first Oscar.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Smith and Rock end up co-hosting next years event. That should bump the ratings.

Cornettoninja · 01/04/2022 15:18

This is what I’m seeing too @MangyInseam.

The backstory, for those that don’t know, is that she had a very public affair with one of her sons friend and there was a subsequent tv interview with her and WS focussed on it. I think the tide truly turned against her round about then because many WS fans felt she was manipulating and emasculating him. It was a bigger thing over the Atlantic than here if I remember rightly.

Previous to that the whole Scientology thing has never really been in their favour.

Bellagio40 · 01/04/2022 15:20

Of course it wasn’t staged. Chris Rock was visibly shocked and lost track of what he was supposed to be saying afterwards

AnnesBrokenSlate · 01/04/2022 15:21

This entire episode is bizarre and I don't mean an actor getting overwrought and hitting someone. I mean the people determined to continually post that it was all an act despite all evidence to the contrary.
The police said it was real. The victim said it was real. The other presenters said it was real. The Academy said it was real. The perpetrator said it was real.
There's a real Emperor's New Clothes' vibe about people being so committed to denying what happened in front of millions of people. Is it some kind of psych ops experiment to see if you can get people to deny reality? Or is it some ludicrous conspiracy theory that has somehow managed to rope in social media posters? Or is it something else? They're the questions I'd like answered. Hmm
