New footage of Jada Pinket Smith laughing

Sorry know this has been done to death and probably people losing interest but-

Anybody see the mobile phone footage of slapgate filmed from behind the Smiths that was broadcast on morning TV today?

I'm convinced it was an act now, she didn't bat an eye and just laughed. I wondered why there hadn't been a video of her reaction before now.

Will Smith was literally just about to be handed the Best Actor Oscar! Hardly 'past his peak'

His peers are handing him an award whilst the general public may perceive him to be 'past his peak'. They are not mutually exclusive

@LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana, where has that been stated? She's spoken about having alopecia areata

Chris Rock is fairly well known for 'everybody hates Chris' my children (22-35) and me know him because of that, since the middle 00's. My youngest would consider him an equal with Madonna, but he might not be as global.

@RoastedFerret, he said 'that was a good one' after her reaction, he went after her at the Oscars years before and has created a lot of material about her over the years. Which is why WS was shouting for him to keep her name out of his mouth.

"has created a lot of material about her over the years" has he? I had heard the joke from his time hosing the Oscars in 2016 (which was a fair enough joke imo considering he was hosting the Oscars and the joke was about her saying she was boycotting the Oscars

IReallyLikeCrows · 01/04/2022 16:22

I'm surprised that people haven't heard of Chris Rock but I guess if you're not into comedy and haven't ever watched the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris then his name wouldn't mean much to you outside of the US where he is huge.

The Pfizer thing is some truth mixed with conspiracy theory. Yes, they co-hosted the show, yes one of their off-shoot companies is developing a drug that might help with alopecia but it's not even been approved by the FDA yet, is far from the only drug on the market and is in no way a cure. The notion that Pfizer would be able to stage something as mental as what happened on Sunday and that the two actors/comedians would agree to it, especially Will Smith who may be suspended from the academy, unallowed to vote in the Oscars and/or not allowed to attend for at least the next year, is pretty ludicrous. Far more ludicrous than what happened.

Sure, if it had ended at the slap and if Chris Rock hadn't looked utterly blindsided by it, maybe we'd have thought it was an act. It looked like one. Until Will Smith yelled out the f-bomb not once but twice. On US television where swears on television that isn't HBO or a streaming service are more or less verboten, the idea that someone would pull this act for any reason, let alone being handed a few quid by Pfizer to sell a drug that isn't yet available is only slightly less out there than the notion that Elvis Presley is still alive and the royal family are all lizards.

IReallyLikeCrows · 01/04/2022 16:24

p.s. Of course, this is unimportant but it's possible to have a mild interest in this and give more of a shit about the fact that there is a horrible war in Ukraine and that prices for everything are shooting up so quickly that even people who are relatively comfortable are worrying about making ends meet. In fact, at times like this something trivial is a way of not worrying about stuff we all have no control over and that could have a horrible impact on us all.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 01/04/2022 16:27

I’m really shocked that people are dismissing a black woman’s stress alopecia as self inflicted!
In this day and age are people still unaware of the pressures placed upon black women to wear their hair in certain “acceptable” styles that in turn lead to this, and how many people still scorn natural styles. Dismissing it as self-inflicted suggest that her previous hair choices were vanity driven.
And apart from anything else JPS did not slap another person!

RoastedFerret · 01/04/2022 16:28

Well considering he has difficulties reading social cues I'm not sure the fact that he said that was a good one after seeing her reaction means anything? He said himself that he can't read people because of his disability. I don't know their history but I don't think that excuses slapping and verbally abusing someone you know has a learning disability?

I completely agree with this. To go a bit Will Smith on it, it's fucking appalling.
Cornettoninja · 01/04/2022 16:30

Will Smith behaved like a man who believes a woman is his property, diss her and you diss him

You think? That’s not the impression I get. I think he behaved like a man who thinks that’s how other people think he should behave. Neither is good obviously.

Neither his behaviour during the ceremony or subsequent bravado seemed to come naturally to him imho.

If I was going to bring Jada into this it’d be to point out that she’s a very strong character and I think that WS was trying to be strong too. But he’s not.

Sharrowgirl · 01/04/2022 16:33

The most interesting part of that new footage is that Jada doesn’t even look at her husband as he comes back and sits down, then starts shouting and swearing. She is resolutely fixed on CR. Seems odd but I don’t know why.

Aparently, the Academy for Motion Picture, Arts & Sciences are (AMPAS are investigating a formal review & exploring 'consequences' of WS's actions. Whoopi Goldberg who is on the board of directors said there will definitely be consequences and the board has condemned what happened. It is was NOT staged!

GoodHairDay86 · 01/04/2022 16:35

Could be a lie obviously but I've seen on Instagram a screenshot of the wife of one of the security at the oscars, she said they were all told about 4pm that there would be a scene between the 2 and they were not to intervene or react..

Sounds true to me as if it wasn't a stunt I believe security would have been all over Will!

I believe it was a stunt, let's be honest.. if it weren't for this happening most people wouldn't even know the Oscars had happened, the past few years it has been so dead

UsernameIsNotAvailableRightNow · 01/04/2022 16:36

If your kids never made you sit through the Madagascar films on repeat for years count yourself lucky.

If they did, the zebra is voiced by Chris Rock.

Vapeyvapevape · 01/04/2022 16:37

If this was staged then it would have been mentioned by now and I doubt WS would have issued the apology that he did.

WrongWayApricot · 01/04/2022 16:41

Pfizer would have had to pay Smith an incredible amount of money to ruin his own career and Oscar. He just fucked up, like people do all day, everyday, everywhere.

He's also been in a few films with Adam Sandler - Grown Ups 1 & 2, The Week Of

He’s a million miles from being an equal with Madonna.

His Wikipedia article was averaging just short of 3k hits per day (which is still decent) prior to the Oscars incident.

pageviews.wmcloud.org/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&range=latest-20&pages=Chris_Rock

Madonna’s averages just short of 11k hits per day.

Chris Rock is a fairly high profile comedian (hence being brought on to present an award), but he’s not part of pop culture in the way a Madonna is. Funnily enough this incident may just propel him into that status (or at least the incident will). He’s not a Robin Williams or a Jim Carrey or a Monty Python or a Charlie Chaplin or a Rowan Atkinson or even an Adam Sandler, pop culture icons. He’s a solid stand up comedian whose ticket sales were doing ok until they were given a turbo boost after being on the receiving end of a slap.

MakeThingsRight · 01/04/2022 16:47

Were you even born when The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was on originally?

Chris Rock is massive.

No way would Will Smith do that as a joke on what turned out to be the biggest night of his career.

Chris Rock is and always has been a goady fucker. They have a back story for sure.

Tbf a lot of those are probably people born post 2000 wondering why she still makes it into the gossip columns.

(I’m old enough to remember pre-evita Madonna but she’s not really relevant to younger generations anymore. Much as she tries).

Except Jada Plinkett_Smith has had every hair style imaginable over the years, she's hardly been suppressed and worn it pulled back tight or in braids all her life...
LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 01/04/2022 16:52

Well aware of the difference, I have AA. The education you are lacking are about the issues around black women and hair.(quote)

How dare you bring up race!! All races suffer with traction alopecia!! Years of pulling hair into a tight ponytail can cause this, not just braiding. You should know this if you supposedly have aa🙄
