If you've not got a Smart Meter.

And are on the Price Cap rate - as rates go up on 1st April and you want to ensure that your supplier knows how much of your energy was used before and after the price cap changes.

I am sure it will be trending on Twitter tomorrow. #meterreadingday

I have a Smart Meter so don't think i need to do it.

I too want to know about prepayment meters!

Usingit · 31/03/2022 07:48

Martin Lewis and Matt Alright said very recently on the TV to check with your supplier with prepayment meters as some were allowing extra money at old price but some weren't.

EthelTheAardvark · 31/03/2022 07:49

But how does that work? Are the Gas People obliged to accept people's readings?

ChopinBoard · 31/03/2022 07:50

Tried to do it yesterday but someone has locked the cupboard with the electricity meter in (we have never had a key) and British gas won't accept a gas reading without it! Of course you can't actually speak to anyone or even leave a message because they are so busy (funny, that).

None of the neighbours seem to have a key so we'll have to try to speak to the (thoroughly useless) letting agent today Hmm

You can buy those types on Amazon usually, they're generic keys
Sirzy · 31/03/2022 07:59

Just done mine. The nice weather means I have managed to reduce usage by 25% in the last month. Shame it’s now freezing and the bills are going to sky rocket no matter what!

Do you mean a normal meter cupboard key or a specific padlock type one?

If it's the former generic one you can buy one from a DIY store

I haven't heard of the Gas People but most suppliers have an online way to submt a meter reading that will be used for billing. Do you have an online account?
saleorbouy · 31/03/2022 08:15

You could perhaps overestimate your usage and take the advantage of having some energy credit.
Most suppliers have overestimated usage for years so why not make the advantage in your favour this time.

SlipperySlope99 · 31/03/2022 08:16

I did mine yesterday as my old tariff ends today- I’m with eon
I entered a wrong digit to submit for my electricity and it wouldn’t accept reading - flashed up- oooh that’s a bit high, check again
I have to submit my smart gas meter readings each month now, once I found out the meter isn’t sending readings- only found that out after noticing I hadn’t had any gas invoices for 4 months 🙄

This appears to be a clear case of fraud from what I've read. Customers can't give estimated readings as such, you'd have to lie and say it was your actual reading Unless you put a ridiculous amount I'm not sure how anyone would ever find out though
userxx · 31/03/2022 08:40

@Waxonwaxoff0

I have a smart meter, I guess i don't need to do it? I'm on a fixed tariff until end of May so bill will go up from June.

Yeah, you don't need to bother on a smart meter.

I know! I was so impressed with how little we've used this last week, after today it won't make a difference.

Jobseeker19 · 31/03/2022 08:47

I'm baffled, what do they do with the information and how can I get the most out if it? I'm on a prepayment.

Okbutnotgreat · 31/03/2022 09:03

I’ve done readings and taken photos, can’t actually get into my account to submit them thoughHmm

Crazykatie · 31/03/2022 09:08

@MrsLargeEmbodied

i dont understand my electric metre, it has 3 readings
Digital meters have date, time and kWhs displayed, it easy to read then wrongly in a dark cupboard.

They warned that may be an issue due to the amount doing them. I did mine super early so managed it thankfully. Hope you get them up soon
ssd · 31/03/2022 09:25

Im going to do mine later, but i cant really understand why we're told to do them ( though i trust martin lewis all the way)

wizzler · 31/03/2022 09:32

Done mine

ssd · 31/03/2022 09:40

The EDF site has crashed it says they are doing essential work on it Hmm

It’s to make sure that accounts are up to date before tomorrows price hike to stop people paying more than needed.
AhhWoof · 31/03/2022 09:50

Eon next site is down too. 45 mins on hold to submit in the phone instead!

Usingit · 31/03/2022 09:52

Just looked on Down Detector and 4 energy companies are at the top of the homepage as having problems

Livebythecoast · 31/03/2022 09:54

@MrsLargeEmbodied

Mine has a number 1 (day reading), I press the blue button for number 2 reading (night reading) - not sure what the 3rd one is but never submitted it.

I've just gone on Eon website and it won't let me 😭 - think the website has crashed.

Because then you will have the correct units registered at the lower price before the price cap rises tomorrow.
