Work phrases that only exist in your field

NoEffingWay · 30/03/2022 19:05

'Level 1,2,3 & 4 obs'
'Where's the ward lighter?'
The magic numbers-'5&2'
'Sectioned or informal?'
'They have been secluded'
'Absconsion risk'
And many more!

The world of mental health nursing is full of 'em.

What words or phrases do you use at work which no-one understands.

LatteToday · 30/03/2022 23:58

The SoS would like to chat after OPQs with PPS about a few WPQs. No UQs today.

And quite a lot of letters roll off my tongue in sequence: MHCLG (though that’s out of date now it’s DELUHC) DCMS

I understood every word OP , it's took me a few years though , Google has been my friend at times especially now most meetings happen on teams now and you can't always make out what is being said as everyone is wearing masks on the wards .

I often catch myself talking In letters and it's actually ridiculous Grin

Sometimes I feel like I work for Bop-it.

Spin it
Plunge it
Cap it
Flick it
Chuck it

Also 'specific TV channel did it again last night!'. Lying tossers.
@TheSilveryTinsellyPussycat I mean no ridicule to my patients, who are the heart of what I do.
The acronyms and phrases are shorthand, otherwise handover would take about 2 hours.
Never worked in mental health, but I can tell what many of of those are. I am an awful patient. Staff would discuss me in veiled terms within earshot, and I would confront them and get so mad.
AgathaMystery · 31/03/2022 01:19

@SwayingInTime

But why always ‘Shrom’ and AY-AR-EM? Does it became a word once the acronym is over 3 letters? Will we ever give up the T in PET? When will they stop trying to make IVO happen?
Dunno - I’ve never thought about it!

I guess we can’t say ‘I’m going to arm her’ or ‘she needs arm-ing’ Hmm

I guess it just flows. Whereas DCDA or T1DM or OGTT doesn’t.

We’ll never give up the T. Surely?!

mostlydrinkstea · 31/03/2022 06:41

@DameCelia I'm a priest in the Church of England. I was well trained in all things liturgical so I know how to lay up chalice, ciborium and patern on a corporal with purificators to hand. When I started it took took ages to get the burse and veil looking tidy and to remember to genuflect in the right places in the liturgy. I shudder when tv props departments don't know the difference between a stole and a maniple or chuck an ornate chasuble on a CofE priest in the 18th century.
