How did you meet your husband or partner?

I’m in my mid-twenties and I am single and ready to find my future partner or husband. However, I work in a small team so there’s no chance of finding my future husband at work. I don’t think online dating is for me either, and this really limits my options.

I’m wondering how you’ve all met your husbands or partners, because I could do with some inspiration. I would love to hear stories especially if you didn’t meet at uni, work, or online dating.

If you have ideas for how I can meet men, with a view to romance, then please let me know!

Before my husband tho, I met two of my exes in pubs and one through a mutual hobby, surfing.

@Pyewhacket

University, queuing at the refectory for chips.
Same here!

Met DH in my first week of university queuing up for dinner. We married the week after we left university 4 years later! Married 28 years, together 32 years (2 DC now at university). He was my first and only boyfriend too!

Work - crowning moment was when I was going out the door with a tray full of dirty cups as he was coming in - so flustered and startled, the whole lot went flying! Mortified.

At the cinema in Sydney. On the second night of my year in Australia on a working holiday. We both still remember the film and who paid for the first beer after (me!).

bakewellbride · 29/03/2022 17:40

Match.com 7 years ago in London. I was 25. Married with own home and 2 children now.

zafferana · 29/03/2022 17:45

DH was a colleague of a colleague of my friend and he was moving to my area, so he got my number as a friendly person he could look up when he arrived. I'd have never met him otherwise.

RussianSpy101 · 29/03/2022 17:47

I can’t help as we met at school but my sister met her DH on a night out.

saggyhairyass · 29/03/2022 17:49

A "making friends" website in 2000. We did not stop at making friends.

okayigetit · 29/03/2022 17:58

Met mine on tinder 6 years ago, I was 21 and he was 27, I had only been single for about 8 months and was starting to go on dates but wasn't over my ex, i remember it was a Tuesday night and I was laying on my bed swiping lol, he popped up and I wasn't so sure, I must of stared at his profile for 5 minutes before deciding I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and swipe right on him, and the deciding factor for me was that he had the same job as my ex 🤣🤣 I then messaged him and we have spoken every day since! He says he was only a few days away from deleting the app as he had never met anyone on it! We were pen pals for 3 weeks before we met face to face on a first date 🤣 the rest is history 🥰 I actually regret going out with my ex but I guess if I hadn't, I wouldn't of met DP!

Love@lycos. 22 years ago.

@SiulaGrande

Mine was work so not helpful. But others I know were Shared interest random event Leaving their number on someone's restaurant table as they walked out after eyeing them all evening (!) Church Online dating, the most successful being when they switched from The Guardian to The Times Grin He was the plumber Sports hobby Going round artist open houses (both as mutual visitors and getting with an artist) Randomly going up to someone in a national gallery On a train

It seems the theme in my lot is having the nerve at that moment when you've seen a stranger and felt the butterflies, to act and not just walk on.

I think that’s it isn’t it- it’s all about acting in the moment. I’m so daft though, it takes me a good 3-5 business days to realise someone was trying to get my attention. When it comes to men that pique my interest, I need to pay closer attention to how I feel and act on that.

@Gonnagetgoing

I met my current boyfriend through a mutual friend years ago. We'd lost touch for years and she invited me out with her friends to a Mongolian BBQ. Boyfriend was there with his friend as they were all friends. We dated for 3-4 months then broke up but then reconnected with him last year.

Fiance years ago, I met him through an exercise class. The wife of his cousin was in the same class and she said that the cousin was a soldier on leave, looking to take out a woman in London. I met him and we dated and it snowballed from there.

Another long term boyfriend, was out for a friend's birthday in Covent Garden. He was in a bar with some friends and we all went onto a club and I didn't fancy him at the time. My friend dated his best friend though and a few weeks later his best friend invited us all out to a bar where we got chatting and turned out we got on and liked each other!

Another boyfriend, met in a club in London. Chatted and liked each other.

I personally think you can meet men (and women) anywhere but it's all about if you speak to them (I've been so chicken sometimes I've not spoken or not properly to them!). Over lockdown I was approached in a park by a nice man (was with my mum!) we were watching Egyptian geese goslings but he ended up buying us both coffee at the park cafe and then taking my number and we had a date separately!

Yes, need to just speak to men more when I’m out and about!

@theDudesmummy

I picked him up at a party at a friend's house while on holiday, one night stand in a hotel Blush . He got in touch a few months later when he happened to be passing through the UK for work and asked if we could meet up. Met in a pub, went back to mine and he never left. Married 17 years.
Bet he was not passing through UK for work. Bet he put his hand up HIGH for that job!!

Through mutual friends (a bloody long time ago). I met them for a drink, and there he was.

@CanIPleaseHaveOne no he was literally passing through (was a pilot).

@fromagreatheight

He hit me in the head with a frisbee. Not on purpose, mind.

I seem to have form for this kind of thing, though –the last long-term relationship I had before this one, we met when he tripped over me in a bookshop (I was crouched down reading and he was walking backwards).

Perhaps you could try just sticking your foot out on a busy pavement and see who falls down? Grin

Note to self: assault man

Well originally I met ex husband I met at primary school, my partner I met at high school!
Got together with ex-H at high school and then married early twenties, divorced mid thirties. Partner of 6 yrs lives nearby and we just got more friendly and it went from there.

OvOvO · 29/03/2022 18:50

Met first husband in the pub.
Second at work.
Not sure I could cope with OLD if this marriage went tits up.

OdeToSadDisco · 29/03/2022 18:55

In a pub. He was my friends' flatmate.

PaddlingLikeADuck · 29/03/2022 19:20

Plenty of Fish.

Messaged him on a Wednesday, met him on the Saturday and moved in 4 months later.

SixteenTwelve · 29/03/2022 19:21

We were assigned rooms 5 doors down from each other in university halls and shared a kitchen. I think we started shagging maybe 3 weeks into first year and were “friends with benefits” throughout uni as neither of us were looking for anything serious at 19. Stayed in touch after graduation seeing each other every few weeks and made it “official” when we were 23. The rest is history, been the best of friends for 11 years this autumn.

Both my brothers met their partners at work.

My parents met because my mum’s friend was marrying my dad’s brother and they danced together at the wedding.

Wellthisiscrapeh · 29/03/2022 19:22

First husband at 21 - pub gig.

Second husband at 31 - pub gig.

Both Ska bands.

Dh gets nervous when I go to see Ska bands in the back of pubs 🤣
