A horse, an actual horse, complete with carriage outside my house and secured it to my drainpipe!

Killing time before a site visit in Hull once, I decided to take a look at the street in a satellite town where DM grew up. Neat rows of interwar semis with the usual signs about no ball games etc. - and "No riding of horses on the grass verges ".

Also I 've worked most of my life as a civil servant in what used to be a 'superdepartment', with people in government offices all over England. There was a survey done on how we commuted to work. Cue complaint (not serious) from one person that there was no scope to put "horse" on the form- apparently she rode to the office several times a week.

@TheRealMrsMac

There's a lot of white on the latest horse photo posted. For a black horse. It doesn't look like the horse in the first photo. Not just my opinion either.

I heard it straight from the horse's mouth.

Sorry folks, but I suspect this is a bit of a pantomime horse

I assumed it was a piebald?

At great risk of outing myself here, I grew up in Hull and we used to ride our horses on the grass verges. We rode everywhere. The council estates were the best places to ride, loads of verges to gallop along! The garden villages were quite good too. Everyone tethered their ponies on rough ground. Lots of people had them, it wasn’t just for rich kids.
HorsePark · 26/03/2022 13:27

@TheRealMrsMac black is the main colour, it did also have some white. It also had a distinctive small white mark on its face which is why I only posted half its face. To protect its identity Grin

I can assure you this is 100% genuine. It was certainly a surprise to us!

@SiobhanSharpe

I worked in the City in the mid 70s and 80s and remember the beautiful shire horses pulling the brewery delivery carts with all the beer barrels. (And not just in the city either, around Dalston and Hackney too, in the 60s.) I well remember the Geffrye museum in Bethnal Green - is it now called the Museum of Childhood? It was a bit dull, tbh.
It is now called the Museum of the Home, the Museum of Childhood is an outreach of the V and A I think and is in Bethnal Green.

Daffodils22 · 26/03/2022 17:43

busymomtoone · 26/03/2022 17:50

That's probably to stop people exercising their trotting horses and sulkies up and down the road. There's a dual carriageway near me that is sometimes used by people doing that early on Sunday mornings. They don't half go fast.
Insanelysilver · 26/03/2022 18:18

I desperately want to see a photo !

WiddlinDiddling · 26/03/2022 18:24

Does seem to be a trotter and trotting sulky.. they absolutely go like the clappers and give me the wobbles - ive seen carriage related accidents and they tend to be nasty, when I worked with driving horses it honestly filled me with fear I never knew when I worked with ridden horses!

Justontherightsideofnormal · 26/03/2022 18:25

#crying. Not read through the comments but finding this so funny. DH and I finding this funnier that it maybe is.

Rainbowtookie · 26/03/2022 18:38

That's going to be hard to move... can u separate the two and then create space or something

Nikkibea · 26/03/2022 18:48

Hire it out for weddings on eBay...

Cab65 · 26/03/2022 18:48

Well I came out of my house once and there was a camel tied to a tree opposite and no I don’t live in Egypt, I had a few very funny moments then I realised the circus was setting up on some nearby waste ground.

Sooziewoozie · 26/03/2022 19:07

🤣🤣 Brilliant! Love a post like this! I think a photo is absolutely necessary xx

Well thats set the standard for all future parking threads.....it now has to contain at least one horse to be worthy of the title!!

Wins the internet for me!

WTAFhappened123 · 26/03/2022 20:02
