Warsaw Russian is letting out a lot of smoke - there has been no decision on who among them will be the next pontiff.

Biden is going there Friday

Is Boris Johnson the designated survivor?

Who the heck let me be in charge?

@PaperTyger

Yes it is ljsbear. However as pp Said it's interesting how they are in the grip of the old guard who remembers the Soviet times. But their own DC are the vanguard.

Ukraine is ruled by the young.

I Keep posting it but the article / Atlantic is very hopeful about Russia's future as long as they survive this last raut.

I missed that article, could you repost?
EsmaCannonball · 24/03/2022 19:42

I've been looking at some on the threads on Twitter debunking the propaganda peddled on Russian state television. One report claimed British mercenaries were fighting in Luhansk, the evidence being a Russian-language copy of the works of Shakespeare found in the rubble. There's a video purporting to be of a crying Ukrainian woman, grateful that she's escaped to Russia after being trapped by Ukrainian soldiers who wouldn't even give a starving woman any bread. Despite all the trauma she has somehow managed to get a fresh manicure, replete with the Russian flag painted on her nails. I don't know whether to laugh at this stuff or worry that it works despite being shit.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 24/03/2022 19:46

I am feeling sorry for those Russian soldiers who were duped into this war and aren't able to extricate themselves. I am hearing about soldiers fleeing or surrendering but I wonder how many really know this is a genuine option? If it's widely known? People wish for a coup in the Kremlin but Russian soldiers laying down their weapons and walking away would be a more powerful and long term solution. Wishful thinking I know.

Onceuponatimeinalandfaraway · 24/03/2022 19:47

This is probably a really silly question but I’m asking anyway.
I’ve seen a few reports over the last couple of weeks of planes having to return to airports because of “squawk 7700 code”. Both commercial and military. Is this is always reported and I’ve just never paid attention before or is it unusual? If it’s unusual is it possible hackers are messing with airplane computers or something? Like i said probably stupid question but it’s bugging me and some of you are very knowledgable.

Jokaline · 24/03/2022 19:50

Lavrov has claimed that Slovakias decision to send it S3000 defence system to Ukraine is a breach of an agreement between Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union.

Really shows the mentality in the Kremlin that they still harp on about an agreement between two countries that don’t exist anymore.

Onceuponatimeinalandfaraway · 24/03/2022 19:56

“The worst thing during the war is not having clear answer to requests for help” Zelensky to nato. Just played on c4 news. I hate that we aren’t sending him the tanks and planes.

I thought Putin had sent him a few columns of tanks, surely he doesn't need anymore?

Are other countries sending them or do you mean everyone?
FatCatThinCat · 24/03/2022 20:00

I've just seen that Russian state tv is showing that awful aerial footage of flattened Mariypol, but claiming that's what the evil Ukrainian terrorists have done and why it's so important for Russia to be successful. Bastards!

they release it in 48 hours, as said! Right now they are sitting on it.

Anonymous is a strange entity but a few of them are absolutely top notch hackers, Im told.

Anyone else think what Russia needs is a Russian 'Led by donkeys' outfit ?

Nothing unusual I’ve seen..in the normal run of events you’d possibly expect to see an emergency squawk every day or two in UK airspace.

FYI “7700” is the numeric code dialed into the transponder (part of the communication system) on the aircraft if an emergency is declared and is done because it makes the aircraft more obvious on Air Traffic Controllers displays..that helps ATC give the emergency flight priority verses surrounding traffic.

Having said it’s done when an emergency is declared most of the time the trigger for doing so is relatively mundane - majority of occasions you see it done in the civilian airline world it’s because a passenger needs medical attention PDQ and the aircraft needs to be given priority for an approach.

The military don’t tend have the same problem but they can end up squawking 7700 for some relatively minor problems such as bird strikes or reactively minor mechanical issues.

Hope that helps.

As sanctions bite Russia, fertilizer shortage imperils world food supply

www.reuters.com/business/sanctions-bite-russia-fertilizer-shortage-imperils-world-food-supply-2022-03-23/

This was interesting about fertiliser shortages due to the conflict, we'll have to find solutions for it or it will cause food shortages and soaring prices, having the biggest impact on the developing world (like the Mauritania link before). The world needs to act on this now, I hope there is a plan being thought up somewhere.

Those poor children in the tweet about the lady arriving from Mariupol to Hungary, thank goodness she was able to take them with her.

Interesting about the pallets re: trade (and the war effort), does this mean that Russia's economy is fur coat and no knickers, relying only gas and oil exports?

borntobequiet · 24/03/2022 20:53

Pallets

Oooh pallets. No crisis complete without pallets.

Onceuponatimeinalandfaraway · 24/03/2022 20:54

Re Zelensky asking for tanks and planes…I’m paraphrasing, he said something like (I can’t rewind all 4 doesn’t allow that)

“you have 20 million tanks between you all I’m asking for 1% of them. Give to us or sell to us. “ I’m shit with numbers it might not have been 20 million but it was a number that made me agog at there being that many between all of nato.

And I meant all of the world giving them, if he’s asking for those then that’s what he needs, what right has Boris or anyone else not in the war zone to say they know better what he needs? Again my lack of knowledge about what’s needed in war may be showing me up here too and yes I’m being emotional.

PaperTyger · 24/03/2022 21:03

Really 20 millions tanks??

Neome · 24/03/2022 21:03

Curious about the Anonymous 48hrs there’s a tweet saying it’s to pressure companies still trading in Russia to withdraw or their activities will be published.

@Ijsbear

There have been some cyber attacks, can't find the link now but they are happening. Nothing economy-destroying yet though. I suspect counter-attacks are happening too.
Still catching up but Libero Quotidiano in Italy are claiming the national train line has been subject to a cyber attack. DH was reading about it but I can't find the link for it - not sure if anyone else can verify
MarshaBradyo · 24/03/2022 21:11

Have any tanks been provided so far?

I take it planes haven’t?

Wonder if it’s escalation risk or other reasons - planes I kind of get but tanks..

Onceuponatimeinalandfaraway · 24/03/2022 21:13

@PaperTyger

Really 20 millions tanks??
I did say I might have got the number wrong, I’m terrible for Mixing Things up. And my memory is shit. So yes it might not be 20million, maybe 20,000 maybe another number entirely. I’ll see if I can find it…l

Every great political issue of our day should have a pallet discussion as part of it.
