Oh, Nazanin. How dignified you are.

Just seen a clip of the press conference she gave. How generous of her to share it with the daughter of a man still trapped in Iran.

How composed and articulate she is. Honestly, with so many fucking idiots in power, how do we keep the faith in the face of what happened to Nazanin.

No she wasn't Vivienne. Don't be ridiculous. She was a project manager for a company in London, visiting her parents with her toddler.

TanteRose · 22/03/2022 01:07

This nails it

“ She wasn’t going to emote for the hell of it. She wasn’t a performing seal. She was a woman with her integrity and sanity to maintain. Nazanin had spent six years practising how to compartmentalise her emotions and she wasn’t about to stop now.”

bultaoreune · 22/03/2022 01:47

yeah the debt couldn't be paid because of sanctions but now it can because UK govt needs Iranian oil. I agree that humans shouldn't be used as bargaining chips but neither should a government back on their agreement. I see how people like us who have dual nationalities, because shock horror we are immigrants, have to be grateful for just being able to exist here.

Some people really really hate women of colour don’t they, dear god some people are so incredibly vile.

I'd have said exactly the same if Terry Waite had returned home and blamed the foreign office for his incarceration in a foreign country.

Lovely that she is home. I hope she now takes time to spend with her family privately, away from the spotlight.

Saucery · 22/03/2022 07:38

She didn’t blame the FO for her incarceration, she blamed the FO for the length of that incarceration. I know details are important to you, so didn’t want that erroneous statement left uncorrected.

JanisMoplin · 22/03/2022 07:52

People who say her parents should have met her in another country have no idea how difficult it is for brown and black people to even get tourist visas. It involves huge amounts of paperwork and expense including
bank statements
letters from employers
property deeds
I have just done all this to get my mother a tourist visa to come see me. It took months and cost a huge amount. Must be even harder for Iranians.
Britons simply do not realise passport privilege. POC are assumed to be terrorists and restricted from travel.

As for what Nazanin says to Richard, it is none of our fucking business.

titchy · 22/03/2022 07:54

And would you have chosen a thread that celebrated his release, remarked in the terrible ordeal he had been through, and the dignity he showed in the first two days of release to do so? No, you'd have probably read the room a little better. But hey, woman of colour - always a good time to criticise.

Did I miss the memo that women of colour are above criticism and that any criticisms that are levelled at them is motivated purely because of the colour of their skin?

'she blamed the FO for the length of that incarceration.'

If Terry Waite had returned home and blamed the Foreign Office for the length of his incarceration I'd have said the same thing. This is nothing to do with people of colour.

Again. Lovely for her, Gabriella and Richard that she is home. I hope she will treasure every moment and if she can't criticise the regime responsible for her situation because of worries for her poor family still living there, then perhaps she should not say anything at all.

'And would you have chosen a thread that celebrated his release'
The thread was commenting on the press conference. I'm merely giving a bit of balance to her media comments. If it were just celebrating she was home I'd have agreed.

You seem very invested in her shutting up and going away, JanieJones. One might well wonder why…….

Interesting Twitter thread from Jeremy Hunt

'You seem very invested in her shutting up and going away'

Oh no I'm happy to hear her story. However as I said if she can't/won't criticise the regime responsible for her incarceration then perhaps she shouldn't be criticising the foreign office for taking too long to secure her release, as if they were just sat shuffling papers and twiddling their thumbs for 6yrs.

Seems an odd stance particularly as her family who have actually witnessed what has been involved have voiced their thanks. However as has been pointed out I haven't been detained in a foreign country for 6yrs so I'd perhaps project too.

JanisMoplin · 22/03/2022 08:20

Yeah Twitter is garbage at the moment. People criticising Nazanin for looking fresh and pretty while Richard looks tired. Remind me who did the 6 years again.

Saucery · 22/03/2022 08:21

Oh look, one of those FSs that some on here think are beyond criticism are criticising the length of time it took…….

EndaDay · 22/03/2022 08:22

I am about to criticise her.

It has nothing to do with her skin colour and, if anyone thinks it is, then they are just looking for trouble in an empty house.

This criticism concerns the fact that she was churlish enough to not thank Liz Truss.

The labour MP, Tulip Siddiq praised Liz Truss, saying:

"When we started speaking to Liz Truss from very early on, it did seem that she was making some sort of plan to re-pay the debt and if she's managed to make it happen, that's quite an achievement.

I've dealt with three prime ministers and five foreign secretaries, Finally, when I came to a woman who was foreign secretary she actually did something."

And yet Nazanin feels no thanks are required. Lynn Truss would not be human if she didn't utter a silent "fuck you" when the woman she made her priority-again according to Tulip-actually made a point of with-holding one word of personal thanks to her.

Not well done, Nazanin-not well done at all.

SueSaid · 22/03/2022 08:25

Tulip Saddiq had been brilliant. Working together cross party to get NZR home and also recognising Truss' efforts.

Saucery · 22/03/2022 08:29

Tulip Siddiq has indeed been outstanding. We need more politicians like her. She is entitled to thank who she likes from the perspective of working tirelessly at this end to secure the release of British people from Iran. And NZR is equally entitled not to thank anyone she doesn’t feel thankful to, without being told to shut up and go away.

Saucery · 22/03/2022 08:31

The bottom line is that no FS was going to be able to approve the debt being repaid until the Govt as a whole wanted something from Iran. There’s nothing super-duper about Truss’s negotiating skills that powered this through.

EndaDay · 22/03/2022 08:32

Tulip must be talking through her arse then!
