Oh, Nazanin. How dignified you are.

Just seen a clip of the press conference she gave. How generous of her to share it with the daughter of a man still trapped in Iran.

How composed and articulate she is. Honestly, with so many fucking idiots in power, how do we keep the faith in the face of what happened to Nazanin.

Blimey @Clavinova is back, with their long rambling posts designed to put everyone off the thread and stop any criticism of the government

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 21/03/2022 23:05

Good grief. This thread has quite brought my mood down.

I have followed her case for years. I worried about her husband publicly starving himself in the street in order to keep the media interested in his wife's plight. I wondered how I would feel if I was separated from my child. I am very, very angry with my prime minister for many reasons - but this family is in the top 3 reasons why I am so furious and that my prime minister (no capitalisation) should be careful to never invite me to a round table where I can vent my opinions...because I am lethal. There is a city councillor and an MSP who wobble at the sight of my emails - oh yes.

I tracked her plane with my heart in my mouth.

I watched the footage of her uniting with her daughter and I was glad of the screens to give them privacy and I felt bad that the sound of her pain and joy were broadcast for the world to weep over because the one thing this woman deserves is privacy - and I admired her decision to make her pain and joy public in a way that was manageable for her because, good grief - mothers know that wail. If you haven't given it you fear it.

I suspect this woman is tactical and has had more than enough time to figure out that if revenge is best served cold...then six years of a bright and resourceful woman's thinking is enough to generate change.

Good for you, Nazanin. I hope you are being subjected to your eleven billionth game of dobble, and and patronising explanations of why Baby Shark is so yesterday, and that your daughter's hair smell divine and look at how lovely she is when she sleeps and I hope you learn a bit more about how tens of thousands of women never gave up on or forgot you.

I hope your only troubles from now on revolve around that now you've got a husband who's setting of standards is a matter of public record.

He's bound to milk that.

Blossomtoes · 21/03/2022 23:05

@eldora

The same thing Blossom. Being treated differently because you’re brown is hurtful.
But saying someone isn’t British isn’t treating them differently. It’s exactly the same whoever they are.
trackerby · 21/03/2022 23:08

What a woman! No wonder her husband spent 6 years working tirelessly to get her back!

Really?????????
eldora · 21/03/2022 23:09

@Snoozer11

So it's somehow less hurtful for a white Polish person to hear they're not British than it is for someone who was born in the Middle East?

More hurtful in that the person from ME is more readily distinguishable from a white British person and therefore subject to racism.

PersonaNonGarter · 21/03/2022 23:12

Richard was right to thank the FS.

Think of allllllll the many falsely accused/convicted/abused women in prisons round the world right now. They have no voice at all - Nazanin had the British press and ultimately the Foreign Office and British taxpayers. That is something to at least acknowledge, even if it would be hard to be ‘grateful’.

eldora · 21/03/2022 23:14

@Blossomtoes

But saying someone isn’t British isn’t treating them differently. It’s exactly the same whoever they are.

It is treating them differently if they have British nationality.

Snoozer11 · 21/03/2022 23:14

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria How puerile! I really don't think her husband is going to "milk" anything.

And who is she going to exact revenge against? The British government or the Iranian government?

I despise the man, but Boris Johnson didn't put her in that jail.

Blossomtoes · 21/03/2022 23:14

You’re really making zero sense here @eldora. Particularly with regard to Nazanin who’s completely indistinguishable in appearance from millions of women with generations of British ancestry.

eldora · 21/03/2022 23:15

i think you’re being disingenuous Blossom.

And of course she’s distinguishable.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 21/03/2022 23:15

Yip, @MassDebate

You don't feel compassion for a woman separated from her kid by politics?

Yip, really.

The crap on this thread does not reflect my feelings about this woman's situation.

Maybe I'm just, really, really nice. Or maybe many women have emailed and complained and been affected by this family's situation.

I guess it depends on your politics and conscience.

Mine are totally fucking crushed of late, and clear.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 21/03/2022 23:17

It was a lighthearted comment about a grim situation.

There's humour in everything. Well, maybe not on this thread, but, in general.

Blossomtoes · 21/03/2022 23:23

I’m really not. She looks like any dark eyed, dark haired 40 something woman, who could be from anywhere in Europe, the US, Canada or Australia. You’re so determined to cry racism you’re denying reality. We can all see what she looks like.
eldora · 21/03/2022 23:25

The reality is that even women with Nazanin’s colouring experience racism.

You’re determined to wear blinkers.

declutteringmymind · 21/03/2022 23:33

The only person who's opinion matters is Nazanin's herself. I think this thread was supposed to celebrate some of the very best qualities of a remarkable person, and woman. Yet still some of you choose to make it about your own opinions and agendas. I wonder what Nazanin would make of the vitriol.

Yaya26 · 21/03/2022 23:37

@JaniieJones

A bit of gratitude for the foreign secretaries who worked tirelessly to secure her freedom and some condemnation of the Iranian govt who were actually responsible would have been nice.
@JaniieJones - seriously! Have you taken a knock on the head recently? Thank incompetent arrogant motormouth Boris and Liz "lets escalate the nuclear threat rabbit in headlights" Truss??? I'm not sure Hallmark have a suitable card.
EthelTheAardvark · 21/03/2022 23:41

@ScribblingPixie

Interesting that they only did this well after Nazanin's arrest.

I assumed it was the whole point, EtheltheAardvark, that the advice for dual nationals not to visit Iran was because of her arrest and that of the other prisoners. The gov were warning that Iran might do the same to others as they were using them as bargaining chips to retrieve the money owed.

Obviously. My point was that, for all that people are trying to pin blame on Nazanin for taking a risk, the reality is that our government was not, at the time she travelled, advising people with dual nationality not to travel there.
EthelTheAardvark · 21/03/2022 23:55

Funny how Britain and the five foreign secretaries are the villains in this story, and absolutely no blame is laid at the feet of the nation that actually kidnapped and imprisoned her.

Funny how you haven't RTFT, otherwise you would know that everyone fully acknowledges where the blame primarily lies.

It was foolish of her to visit Iran in the first place. Why not meet her family in a neighbouring country? God only knows what the money we've paid might be used for.

Victim blaming again. If I am "foolish" enough to walk down a street on my own, I may be mugged, raped or worse. Does that make it my fault? Yet that actually involves more risk than the risk that Nazanin took.

Bottom line is she's an Iranian woman who was imprisoned by the Iranian state. It just so happens she married an English man

Careful, @Snoozer11, your prejudices are showing.

EthelTheAardvark · 21/03/2022 23:57

@Clavinova

Ever thought sometimes of wishing someone well

I do wish her well - and I haven't criticised her - but why does Blossomtoes feel the need to blame Boris Johnson for everything?

It's been pretty universally acknowledged ever since Johnson opened his stupid mouth about her that he is substantially to blame for exacerbating her situation. Why claim it is only @Blossomtoes doing so?
TanteRose · 22/03/2022 00:05

OMG this thread SadSadSad
I jokingly wondered upthread if Nazanin would ever join MN…now I hope to god she never does Sad
I’ve been on MN for nearly 20 years and this is the most ashamed I’ve been to be in the company of some of the women on this thread Sad

LizBennet · 22/03/2022 00:06

Agreed TanteRose, upsetting to think she'd read this thread 😞

Karmakamelion · 22/03/2022 00:08

^^So it's somehow less hurtful for a white Polish person to hear they're not British than it is for someone who was born in the Middle East?
Yes because the children of the polish person wont endure the racism that the child of a middle eastern person will...

EthelTheAardvark · 22/03/2022 00:09

If a British woman lived in Iran and married an Iranian man, but returned to visit England and was arrested, would we expect Iran to get involved and demand she be released? I doubt it.

It's not a question of what we might expect. The simple fact is that, if that happened, Iran would be fully entitled to get involved and to work on behalf of its citizen. But what other countries might do is irrelevant. British citizens are entitled to expect that their government will support and protect them, as promised for centuries past

Viviennemary · 22/03/2022 00:09

I know she was imprisoned unjustly. But was she an activist for women's rights or regime change in Iran? Or was it just a random kidnap and imprisonment.
