Report in the Guardian that she has had her passport returned and that a negotiating team are in place.

Too early for celebrations but I have got my fingers crossed behind my back.

Presumably because we haven't been desperate for their oil till today?

Titsywoo · 16/03/2022 16:28

Out of interest (and not being inflammatory in any way, just curious!) why has she had so much more publicity than the many others in the same position?

@TroublesomeTrucks if you go on the FlightRadar24 app, click on/search for Muscat Airport. Then select Departures and scroll back until you find the flight to Brize Norton and select it.

I’ve attached a screenshot of what it looks like

I’m so happy for her and her family.

Well my answer may also seem inflammatory, but my guess is because she's very attractive and from a posh part of London and has a very middle class white husband.

Chakraleaf · 16/03/2022 16:30

Fingers crossed

lemongreentea · 16/03/2022 16:30

@Porcupineintherough

I think it took the payment of some or all of a 400 million pound debt to get this done.
a debt from 1978 right?

Nothing inflammatory in that question. Hostages families apparently are often advised not to seek publicity. Her husband decided that that was not the way to go and was very vocal. He lead the campaign to free her.
bonfireheart · 16/03/2022 16:30

@titsywoo I think much of this has been down to her husband who has been tireless and done so much to draw attention to her plight.

Lesperance · 16/03/2022 16:30

Or maybe they decided together, but in any case, the publicity came from her family.

yep pretty much
bonfireheart · 16/03/2022 16:32

And agree with PP that him being a well spoken middle class white man did help lots.

Ill informed is the word you are looking for, rather than inflammatory.

You don't think him being white and middle class had an impact on the media coverage the case got? I'm afraid you're the I'll informed one.

I don’t. I think it was Tulip Sissiq’s tireless campaigning that garnered a lot of publicity. She encouraged him to maximise the coverage.

bonfireheart · 16/03/2022 16:37

It's Tulip Siddiq.

Blossomtoes · 16/03/2022 16:39

You’re right, of course it is! If only the s wasn’t right next to the d!
idiotfacelicker · 16/03/2022 16:42

Media bias teaching should be compulsory in schools.

Anyway, she's out of Iran and safe now so I'm going to respect the families wish for privacy now and cease discussing as it no longer serves a purpose.

Do look up media bias though, it's important to understand.

Lesperance · 16/03/2022 16:42

Did you follow this case at all? He went on hunger strike, he talked to the press, he kept it in the public eye. Relentlessly.
How have you missed it? How can you possibly reduce the publicity that he got, for his wife, to him being white and her being pretty? Which is what you said. As if he hadn't do anything, totally negating his efforts. He has been insistently, vocally bringing this to people's attention for years. If he hadn't done anything, I certainly probably wouldn't have heard about it.

Tulipomania · 16/03/2022 16:44

@Titsywoo

Because her husband has campaigned tirelessly on her behalf. And her MP has also done a tremendous amount. Credit to them both.
Saucery · 16/03/2022 16:45

The fact he refused to be quiet and go away like the govt wanted him to had a lot more to do with it than the fact he is white and middle class.
