My concern (and I am being genuine here) about Maria Ovsyannikova is that she is not being given the heavy handed punishment we all expected so the Kremlin can peddle the ‘we’re not monsters!’ myth to whoever they want to hear it, but that she will suddenly and tragically fall out of a window - perhaps through being so ‘distraught’ at the thought she betrayed her country etc.

I sincerely hope she has an escape route.

Shuuu · 15/03/2022 17:43

Sorry if it’s being mentioned but does anyone think the Russians are not purposely targeting western reporters? More have died today & 1 injured as far as I can see

Papertyger · 15/03/2022 17:44

Guys;

Whilst any un due influenced need's.looking into, Putin did not cause Brexit.
Putin did not put trump into their white house.
The USA did not put zelensky into Ukraine and our government is not in Putin's pocket.

Worrying tweets from mariapol?
Hospital taken hostage by Russia's??

DuncinToffee · 15/03/2022 17:45

The prime ministers of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia are scheduled to meet with Ukraine's president Vlodomyr Zelensky in Kyiv at 18:00 GMT, Czech media is reporting.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 15/03/2022 17:47

I am very worried about Mariupol. In spite of yesterday's evacuation, there remains hundreds of thousands of people trapped in the city and the aid convoys are not allowed in. It's a HUGE number and I don't understand why it's still in such a deadlock if peace talks are going well?

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/03/2022 17:47

Belated pmk. Flowers

DGRossetti · 15/03/2022 17:47

Ukraine had it as part of their constitution, it’s what the people wanted.

The RoI had union with the six counties in their constitution, which had to go before the GFA was a go-er.

And you'll excuse my wariness of "what the people wanted"

Papertyger · 15/03/2022 17:49

I can't fathom what China want's with Putin?

Surely Putin is the opposite to China's own style?
Is Russia really so powerful if they try and create a new axis (. of evil)?

A club all of their own?
There are no heavy hitting economies except China?

I really hope we look at the aid we give to those countries I really do.

Ijsbear · 15/03/2022 17:49
@MarshaBradyo

Yes, our talk changes nothing. But the point is that if peace can be gained through accepting a neutral stance, could war have been avoided.

It must be quite confusing and embarrassing for the MN experts who were very clear that "It's not about NATO", now seeing Zelensky apparently using a guarantee of neutral status as the basis for a peace deal.

I'm not delighted at all. There's only less or more horrible options for Ukraine now.
Doubt it. Putin wants the old status quo and the old countries back. They wanted their independence. Nato or no Nato, this was coming either way.

Plus I think myself that he gets off on sowing discord.

Do you think it wasn’t the case?

I’m in the middle of watching Winter on Fire with the footage from 2014 and the thousands who fought in Maidan over joining the EU

It was fairly bloody and more than we’ve seen here in my lifetime

They seemed very motivated

Papertyger · 15/03/2022 17:50

Mariapol, tweets Said people in the hospital had been taken hostage / unverified at the moment.

Alwayscheerful · 15/03/2022 17:53

@MarshaBradyo

Although you do seem delighted by his message

I find it very sad

Ukraine had it as part of their constitution, it’s what the people wanted.

Incidentally has anyone watched Winter on Fire? Such aggression

Yes we watched Winter on fire on Sunday . Very thought provoking. I recommend it. Netflix
EsmaCannonball · 15/03/2022 17:54

Never mind this not being about NATO, I don't even think this is about Ukraine. Putin has made the implicit global schism explicit, hostile and active.

Satsumaeater · 15/03/2022 17:55

I really hope we look at the aid we give to those countries I really do

we've cut the aid budget anyway so maybe we can do a bit more reallocation

Alwayscheerful · 15/03/2022 17:55

Sadly, I think Putin is merely taking a breather, waiting for rations for the troops and supplies from China and then then will be an almighty bloodbath and the Russians will seize the Capital.
EsmaCannonball · 15/03/2022 18:00

I agree re: Marina Ovsyannikova. In a year or two she'll be arrested on some trumped up charge or fall out of a window. I'm also worried about all of the prominent Ukrainians in this. Even if they survive the war, they've got a lifelong target on their back.

Papertyger · 15/03/2022 18:02

Any breather Putin takes though also means more time for lethal aid too reach Kyiv.

elephantmarchingin · 15/03/2022 18:02

Does anyone else live near military bases?

In the last week there has been a massive increase in troops and activity

ESGdance · 15/03/2022 18:04

Anyone think that Putin WON’T bomb central Kyiv - because he wants to maintain the historic centre for his victory parade - to show to the Russians

HelpMeHiveMind · 15/03/2022 18:05

@elephantmarchingin Yes. Can't say ours has been hugely more active than normal and the "High Alert" sign isn't up (which it was when, for example, the country terror threat level was at its highest). I do however feel very uneasy being in such close proximity....rightly or wrongly...I feel like we are a target but DH says that's stupid

Papertyger · 15/03/2022 18:06

I also think the use of drones is worrying.

Surely however nets could be dropped to combat drones?
I don't know

Whoops posted too soon.

He wouldn’t look so good presiding over rubble. The long tank columns from east and west could be deliberately slow because he wants a submission rather than a city razed to the ground. His airforce could have taken it out weeks ago.

dibly · 15/03/2022 18:10

I’ve never seen a message less well aligned to a user name @Alwayscheerful.

How Zalensky is holding up with these constant mindfucks I have no idea

meditrina · 15/03/2022 18:14

@Shuuu

It's the type of war - it's a lot more dangerous for journalists. Look at the casualty rate for former Yugoslavia. The rate for this conflict doesn't appear high when you compare it to rates from a similar conflict (European, largely urban, indiscriminate shelling)

That could of course change Sad

Wrongkindofovercoat · 15/03/2022 18:14

Putin did not cause Brexit.
Putin did not put trump into their white house

Well I guess sometimes good things simply just happen to bad people ?
