That’s great news (if true!)

AgnesWestern · 15/03/2022 14:30

That’s a shame about China,

I read the opposite yesterday, that China had said they were strengthening ties with US and weren’t going to be supplying arms to Russia.

Wonder if that was fake news, think it was the Washington Post, there’s so much information around you don’t know what to believe. Well that’s how I feel anyway.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2022 14:34

I’m still waiting re China too

Not sure it’s a definite either way

holliem91 · 15/03/2022 14:34

I've read they're trying to play both sides (China). I don't really understand how though.

I hoped they wouldn't support Russia but apart of me isn't surprised, especially since the US forced them into choosing a side, they were bound to go with Russia.

PestorPeston · 15/03/2022 14:35

Is Russian news broadcast live?
It seems a bit slack not to have a delay.

holliem91 · 15/03/2022 14:37

@MarshaBradyo

Oh I though it was confirmed, I must've misread.

Let's see what happens then.

DGRossetti · 15/03/2022 14:38

Maybe they've read "A History of the English Speaking Peoples" ?

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2022 14:38

Maybe it is Hollie

Sorry! I’m just not really following it properly and waiting to see what actions follow

economise · 15/03/2022 14:45

The rest is history is a good podcast to listen to if you would like some historical information about the Soviet Union.

holliem91 · 15/03/2022 14:48

@MarshaBradyo

No, I think your right. I don't think anything has been officially confirmed.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 15/03/2022 14:58

I thought the USA reprimanding China publicly was very heavy handed too, maybe more diplomacy behind the scenes would have been better.

After going dark for nearly 24 hours, Marina Ovsyannikova has surfaced in court, where she's facing a misdemeanor charge for her protest on Channel One.

Crucially, it's not under the new "fake news" law – so the most she can get is 10 days in jail.

Very surprised by this but perhaps they thought there was too much publicity with this particular incident so opted for the less serious charge.
AgnesWestern · 15/03/2022 15:10

Any update on peace talks? I know they’re due to be continuing today. Not holding out much hope.

wonderfullife123 · 15/03/2022 15:18

@AgnesWestern just this from Telegraph - only speculation though.

Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine must recognise it will never join Nato.

The Ukrainian president’s comments sparked speculation that he could be laying the groundwork for a peace deal with Moscow, which wants Kyiv barred from joining the alliance.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 15/03/2022 15:18

Just marking my place, Ive got a stomach bug so struggling to keep up with the news today.

Just seen Boris is off to Saudi Arabia surely they are worse than Russia for humanitarian crimes.

dibly · 15/03/2022 15:24

In my naive little bubble I very much hope that Zelensky’s visitors are bringing EU paperwork for him to sign, and we can find a way to work around the impact of sanctioning China. The thought of financially rewarding any country which props up Putin in this war is abhorrent.
On the previous thread, a poster was expressing disappointment in India's stance. There is an interesting opinion article explaining their reasons here: www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2022/3/14/why-is-istandwithputin-trending-in
I trust the UK will now seek to mend its bridges with the EU, form a close trading/cultural relationship with the EU and forget all about a FTA with India who have shown their true colours.

Can someone please link to thread 12, I'm still behind and now can't find it via my cell. Many thanks!

The UK cannot afford to upset India. Remember they are the lynchpin in the post-Brexit trade explosion that - like nuclear fusion and hover boots - is "just around the corner".

Alexandra2001 · 15/03/2022 15:49

@DGRossetti ah yes Indian "student visas" in return for what exactly???

China, Brazil & India have shown their true colours.

Well whatever India gets, Pakistan does too. That's a given.
