@Snorkelface

What is this thread about?
It's pretty obvious what it's about

This is a globally impacting situation

Why don't you just come out and say what's bothering you

Snorkelface · 16/03/2022 23:50

I's not obvious what it's about at all. Please enlighten me. And my question about who has actually been to Ukraine (or Russia actually) or has any connection to there still stands.

My family originated from that region. In what way does that make a difference?
ClaudineClare · 16/03/2022 23:56

Oh are we only allowed to discuss events that are happening in places we have a connection with, even if those events have profound implications for the wider world?

Rightyo.

I'm not sure why the pp would want to come onto a long-running thread, try to derail it and make no positive contribution. There are plenty of other threads, after all. It's a tough one...

Yes I wonder why
Snorkelface · 17/03/2022 00:05

Chance read actually, genuinely shocked by ignorant/bizarre/fantastical content. That's why I asked who was directly connected to or had knowledge of Ukraine (or Russia, or Belarus even) as it seemed so weird. Not getting many takers.

eglantine7 · 17/03/2022 00:05

I agree. It would change the world in so many positive ways. So many wars are down to fossil fuels essentially.

WeirdArchitecture · 17/03/2022 00:06

I just want to take a moment to thank everyone contributing to this thread. It is quite refreshingly tolerant for MN, and wonderfully informative. I can deal with the issue ok, but do sympathise with and very much welcome those with anxiety seeking solace here.

This thread since part 1 has been a great resource that I check in on each day as I'm not much of a news reader.
I hope it continues in this way and doesn't descend into a mud slinging match Grin It feels like everyone is welcome and the general tone is measured and tolerant. Thank you:)

The most heartbreaking detail for me at the moment (amongst so many) is how the people stranded in Mariupol are not allowed medical or drug supplies, so those who are seriously ill can't get the treatment they urgently need. I have no words. What a disgusting display of inhumanity this is.

And I'm certain I heard that Trump referred to the initial invasion of Ukraine as 'a work of genius'. WTAF? I hope people remember this.
Apparently he might have done an about-turn today, saying quite the opposite. Cockwombles galore.

I can understand the terrible anxiety because I was wreck in the first week.
So, it appears Nazanin was freed because the 400 million debt going back to the Iran/ Iraq war days was settled. So Britain is now open to buying Iran oil and possibly gas. Hmm geopolitics

Not that different from the Venuzalan prisoner release with the US. It's a case of pick your poison and Russia is (not) the flavour of the month.

I am really looking forward to a world where oil is no longer the King commodity.

I agree @TheABC

It sounds like you think you know much, much better than pps? Please, share your greater knowledge?

Not at all. I was trying to establish where other people's posts were coming from. Fact being key. What knowledge were you after?

Because this is an humanitarian crisis, and could be the beginning of WW3 potentially.

30yrs of living & working with Ukrainians, Russians, Moldovans, Romanians, Latvians, Estonians, Lithuanians, Polish, Czechs, Slovakians, Spanish, French, Dutch, Germans, Italians, Danish, Macedonians, Serbians, Kosovans, Georgians, Greeks, South Africans (of various ethnicity), Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, Mauritians, Montenegrans, Portuguese, Hungarians, Finns, Swedes, Norwegians, Ghanaians, Cameroonians, Outer Mongolians, Belarussians, Zimbabweans, Cypriots, Argentinians, Brazilians, Morrocans, Tunisians, Egyptians, Persians... I could go on.

I don't claim to have an enormous amount of political knowledge. But I do hope I have answered your question. Probably met about 1,500 Ukrainians/Russians/Belarussians over that time, from USSR years to present day. And yes, I have been to Russia.

Next question?

ChitChatChatter · 17/03/2022 00:26

@ClaudineClare

I would advise not feeding any you-know-whats that might pop up on this thread...
Agreed and have reported. I've also reported my own first response as I don't want to ramp up any anxiety already felt by others here.
Snorkelface · 17/03/2022 00:31

@sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea Thank you. You're the only one. My original question, was what is this thread about?

But you called the content 'ignorant/bizarre/fantastical' so please, give us your facts. No? Thought not. Night, night.
Snorkelface · 17/03/2022 00:37

@TheOnlyMrsMac. Happy to give opinion or facts. What would you like to know?

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 17/03/2022 00:40

@Snorkelface It's a long running series of threads covering what is being reported regarding Ukraine - or not - and what possible interpretation of that might be. It will obviously have a western European bias. Posters have been sharing news reports from various sources, but the tone has generally been calm, and aiming for factual, rather than emotional.

So if Russian sources are saying something that contradicts what is being reported elsewhere, then that information is welcome.

Jacopo · 17/03/2022 00:57

@Snorkelface I’ve been to Russia twice, once during the Soviet era when one was not supposed to fraternise with local people and it was forbidden to bring Western newspapers into the country, and the second time much more recently when censorship was much less evident. It’s sad to see censorship being re-imposed on the Russian people.
This thread is about the recent Russian invasion of a neighbouring country.
Hope that helps.

strawberriesarenot · 17/03/2022 01:15

Is it possible that Putin doesn't know what is happening on the ground in any detail? If his advisors have been afraid to tell him the truth, as has been said, is it still happening? I don't see, after the atrocities in Mariupol, for instance, how he can be outraged at being called a war criminal.

Snorkelface · 17/03/2022 01:21

@sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea @Jacopo Thank you both for your responses. As I said I chanced upon this thread and appreciate what the intentions were but having having looked further back I very much share the opinions of @baroqueandblue about where this thread has gone. Each to their own.

BreadInCaptivity · 17/03/2022 01:26

Please ignore the derailment of these threads.

They only gain traction when posters respond to them and that results in a massive scroll down to get past extraneous posts.

Which is the point - to fill threads with unimportant content so informative contributions get lost and those watching/contributing in good faith leave as the value of the thread diminishes.
