Corbyn stood in parliament recently saying NATO was being aggressive.

On the other thread there are many links to Corybn and Abbott which I can't link.

The courting of Putin began way back.

Alexandra you do realise we are stunted by inaction here precisely because of the threat of Nuclear warConfused but trident isn't relevant?
Surely it's never been more relevant?

Even at this moment in time I think our army is ok. Happy to be corrected!

Tuba437 · 12/03/2022 14:39

Fingers crossed they are getting somewhere with negotiations now.

Ukraine Invasion Part 12
eglantine7 · 12/03/2022 14:42

Unfortunately we looked away when Putin was committing atrocities in Chechnya. Wrong religion/ the people didn't look like us so who cares? (Actually I'm Asian/ middle Eastern heritage so not taking about myself actually)
This is where Corbyn was correct. He's a man of peace for all humanity. No one can say otherwise and if they do they're lying to themselves.
Britain appeases despots and criminals when it's a business opportunity. I could say the same for the unequivocal support for Saudi Arabia and Israel. Its got to change.

Zelensky: 1300 Ukrainian soliders KIA

500 to 600 Russian troops surrendered yesterday.

HappyWinter · 12/03/2022 14:47

Thanks for the thread Magic Fox.

I read this article yesterday and it brought it home to me about the people in Kyiv going about their lives and trying to cope with the invasion, whilst waiting for what happens next. It could be any one of us, if we were living in Ukraine. There but for the grace of God, go I.

‘We’re not getting paid’: the Kyiv businesses trying to reopen
Those remaining in Ukrainian capital attempt to adjust to traumatic new normal as Russian forces close in

www.theguardian.com/world/2022/mar/11/were-not-getting-paid-the-kyiv-businesses-trying-to-reopen

I'm dreading what happens next for them, it's distressing to see the stories and images coming out of the war and I can't imagine what it must be like to live through it.

@AgnesWestern and @holliem91, I hope you are both ok, @CaveMum gave some great thinks for helping with anxiety. Maybe take a break from the news and try and make some fun plans for the weekend? I think Agnes said she has a pre-schooler, could you plan a fun Sunday with them? Even something simple like a teddy bears picnic or a trip to the park.

unconfirmed as of yet?

But Im sure many have. What happens to the surrendered troops? It's very hard to imagine the Ukrainians have spare resources for them.

AgnesWestern · 12/03/2022 15:10

@Tuba437 Thanks for sharing, I hope that’s a good sign ! I’m trying to stay positive.

Ijsbear · 12/03/2022 15:12

what the fuck is your point @Bluebellsunderthetrees? That the Ukrainians aren't perfect? Im quite sure you're right.

But the way to solve racism problems is not by invading and flatting the cities. Well, I suppose it does stop racism if you kill them all. I don't think many people would like that solution though.

Do try looking at the Russian record on Human Rights and racism tho. If you don't, of course, have a prior agenda ;)

Papertyger · 12/03/2022 15:12

Ljsbear I was thinking the same thing? Where on earth do they hold all these troops that must take extraordinary man power, let alone food issue's, COVID fear's.

Re the new attack on Kyiv , it's being said that the town is a fortress. Does that mean they Will be able to fight off shelling or bombing?

Ijsbear · 12/03/2022 15:24

I imagine that it means that there are roadblocks all over and a lot of troops. But the Russians will still be able to shell and airbomb buildings and large groups of people.

Other people'll know more than me!

A couple of quotations:

"Leaders win through logistics. Vision, sure. Strategy, yes. But when you go to war, you need to have both toilet paper and bullets at the right place at the right time"

and, most famously, Napoleon

"amateurs discuss tactics, the professionals discuss logistics”

Bluebellsunderthetrees · 12/03/2022 15:25

@Ijsbear

Did you actually watch that video and who he is?
If you did and your response is just to swear at me then I have to wonder at you. Bit outt of whack
That video and how we, the UK, is portrayed is shocking by a man who states he ENJOYS KILLING ITS FUN and he has access to weapons we provide

Ijsbear · 12/03/2022 15:28

Ah so we'll all just withdraw support for the Ukraine then eh?

I'm quite sure that would make you extremely happy.

Bluebellsunderthetrees · 12/03/2022 15:28

Oh and people said they wanted to understand how Russian people
felt.
I have a better idea now. Wonder will I get another lovely private message for sharing it.

notimagain · 12/03/2022 15:28

@Ijsbear

unconfirmed as of yet?

I’d treat all figures (personnel and equipment) from both sides with a great deal of sceptism TBH…it’s all best guess stuff..

www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/03/10/ukraine-casualties-deaths-military-civilian-russian-invasion/

…and it’s always worth bearing in mind when trying to work out who is doing well or not in the mass the fundamental reason why it’s considered that an attacker needs a 3 or 4 to 1 advantage in personnel over the defender when considering assaulting a defending position.

What do you think of the video?
AgnesWestern · 12/03/2022 15:30

Just read this to add to @Tuba437’s pp:

Sky News also notes Zelensky has said he hopes for "significant positive influence" from Israel PM Naftali Bennett.

Ukrainian President said Israel could give security guarantees to Ukraine - and floated the idea that peace talks could take place in Jerusalem.

Ijsbear · 12/03/2022 15:46

That's true even in a non-military location like a city?

Just how many (roughly) Russian troops are in the field anyway?

Ijsbear · 12/03/2022 15:51

@Bluebellsunderthetrees

Oh and people said they wanted to understand how Russian people felt. I have a better idea now. Wonder will I get another lovely private message for sharing it.
People have been sending you messages? I'm not surprised.

Perhaps you might learn to extend your sympathy to the Ukrainians, after all if you can learn to sympathise with the Russians safe in their homes, there might be hope you can learn that it's even harder to be a civilian under fire.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 12/03/2022 15:51
@BringBackCoffeeCreams have you seen an influx of Russian migrants like they have in Finland ?
Not that I'm aware of. But we do have around 4000 Ukrainians arriving each day.

Roussette · 12/03/2022 16:02

This is a very interesting article, I learned a lot.

(Warning... it is very long, and depressing but really worth a read)

Where have I not been sympathetic to Ukrainians unless of course you mean the charming people in my videos or links ?
Are we only allowed to post the positive?
It might surprise you to learn that some people in the UK do know what it is like to live under the gun, it doesn't need to be learnt and it teaches you there are always 3 sides and the ordinary people caught between it all.
If you knew that you would open your mind and read all narratives

notimagain · 12/03/2022 16:07

@Ijsbear

3:1 for any prepared defended position…so yes, AFAIK that would include a prepared city..

I hasten to add there are so many variables that it’s one of those back of the envelope figures that might apply.

I only mention it because some sources are very keen to use raw casualty figures as a metric/indicator of who is “winning” Hmm without considering that you would always have expected to see significantly more losses amongst the Russian forces.

As for number of Russian Forces in the field..lost track of that TBH….
