While i know nothing is concrete I must say its a huge relief to be talking about the sanctions russia will face after this rather than than the terrifying thoughts of what could happen a couple of weeks ago.

PestorPeston · 13/03/2022 18:52

Kyiv still very under threat. I rather feel that Putin might well want to damage it badly.

Ukraine Invasion Part 12
blueshoes · 13/03/2022 19:01

Ukraine is definitely not out of the woods. The situation is still dire and in fact much worse for them and also Russia, Europe and the world than a few weeks ago. But we cling to hope of a diplomatic solution.

Yep for all the talk of Putin this or that, he is still capable of causing huge death and destruction.

The Jake Sullivan interview was very reassuring, the un spoken word is so powerful.

Russia used to be a superpower. It's now slowly descending into major power. Too good an opportunity to miss out on if you believe your country is top dog. Which a lot of American politicians do.

Also, allowing Russia to slip down the world rankings would be a way to reduce Trumps and Johnsons backing.

All against a narrative that it was "Russia wot started it".

I'm not sure he "wants" to but he sure as hell seems ready to follow through and will do it if (from his POV) it's necessary

LittleRedYoshi · 13/03/2022 19:26

I actually think we should lift the sanctions if a deal is agreed - if they remain in place then what do we do the next time Putin steps out of line? We need to lift them when we can so that they can remain a deterrent. Lifting them doesn't mean he 'gets away with it' - the damage they've already done to the Russian economy will still take years to recover from.

TiddyTidTwo · 13/03/2022 19:33

There's what 2M refugees now? If Putin does overthrow Zelensky, are all the countries sheltering them for the time being going to send them back to such a terrible regime?

I've absolutely no issue with them starting new lives elsewhere but they've not come as whole families and left loved ones behind, they didn't want to leave home in the first place!

I am praying Ukraine prevails and am frustrated at the war crimes and genocide taking place on our bloody doorstep

sirfredfredgeorge · 13/03/2022 19:33

the damage they've already done to the Russian economy will still take years to recover from

Which further helps Putin solidify power, he's not personally harmed by the state of the economy, and he gets to continue his repulsive regime.

Thank you - I had completely misread the post!
Natsku · 13/03/2022 19:38

That is a relief about Chernobyl. Now just hope that the staff there will get to rotate out with some replacements, they must be exhausted and fed up.

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/03/2022 19:40

And thank you @DGRossetti

It will takes years to rebuild some of the damage which has been done. The Ukrainians themselves destroyed some infrastructure to slow the invader's progress - that means big civil engineering projects as do repairs to communications, services, etc. Not to mention housebuilding. We're a long way off that though.

Noise on this is NOT good. Looks like China is about to make this go BAD....

TiddyTidTwo · 13/03/2022 19:56

China won't assist. The US is their biggest market and I'm sure they've got their own interest first and foremost, watching the effect of worldwide sanctions

youhadmeatjello · 13/03/2022 19:56

Surely China isn’t going to oblige? They’ve been very very careful to tread the line this whole time

youhadmeatjello · 13/03/2022 19:56

@RedToothBrush what do you mean? I’m not seeing any other news on it? Surely China aren’t going to get involved.

AgnesWestern · 13/03/2022 19:57

@RedToothBrush what do you mean go bad? As in they’ll join up with Russia in this?

cakeorwine · 13/03/2022 19:57

From The Guardian

Russia has asked China for military equipment since the start of the invasion
US officials say Russia has requested military equipment from China since the start of the invasion, according to the Financial Times. This has sparked fears in the White House that China may decide to help Russia and undermine Western efforts to aid Ukraine.

Another person told the FT that the “US was preparing to warn allies about the situation amid some indications that China may be preparing to help Russia.”

“Other US officials have also said there were signs that Russia was running out of some kinds of weaponry as the war in Ukraine approaches the start of its third week,” the FT report said.

WTAF, I can’t imagine China will want to touch that!

On the progress of negotiations, I’m not feeling positive in light of the above request plus the fact they still seem hell bent on taking Kyiv.

I think it may be Russian bluster.

cakeorwine · 13/03/2022 19:59

China's top trading partners

Calculated in Chinese yuan, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the European Union, the U.S., Japan and South Korea were China's top five trading partners in 2021, recording trade volume of 5.67 trillion yuan, 5.35 trillion yuan, 4.88 trillion yuan, 2.4 trillion yuan and 2.34 trillion yuan, respectively.

We need them to buy from and they need us to sell to.

Its literally just come up. FT and Washington Post both reporting it, but its paywalled so I'm waiting on details.

The essence of it from what I can see is the Americans think that the Chinese are about to say yes and they are trying to stop it.

AgnesWestern · 13/03/2022 20:02

I’m feeling scared again tonight Sad just when I thought things were looking up with peace talks.

I hate all this. I wish it would just stop.
