Kids don't have passports

nearlyspringyay · 08/03/2022 11:56

Kids' passports have just gone for renewal, it's maxing me anxious.

If Putin decides to nuke the UK I'd like to try and get them out to family in non NATO countries if we could. Would they be able to without a passport, how do the logistics work?

I realise I'm extrapolating, I'm more concerned with ow it would work in practice, if planes were able to fly etc etc. Do the refugees coming from Ukraine need a passport? What do you do if you don't have one?

I'm being realistic rather than anxious, if there a threat I'd rather get my kids out

Well most sane people wouldn't want to see their kids living in the wasteland of a nuclear holocaust...so you're nothing special there and you are anxious.

There's nowhere to go anyway. We live on an island...if ww3 starts, we can't go to Europe. You won't be able to get a flight out I'd imagine to anywhere else.

drawingpad · 08/03/2022 15:15

I'm being realistic rather than anxious,

I don't think there has been a more unrealistic post on here all week!

KaptainKaveman · 08/03/2022 15:20

OP in the nicest possible way you really are spouting hysterical ill- informed rubbish. If there is a nuclear strike against the UK the best possible outcome you can hope for is to be killed in the first wave. No passport is going to help!

@irishfarmer although never "known" it was assumed in the cold war that targets in Ireland would have been targeted also, essentially to deny them to the US/UK, think Shannon airport etc.

FruitandPasta · 08/03/2022 15:24

You're not being realistic. In the unlikely event of this tipping into nuclear, you're not going to be able to just rock up and book an easy jet flight of whatever.

Politics4me · 08/03/2022 15:30

The way it is at the moment his army couldn't hit UK from Calais.
As Vera says don't worry pet!

irishfarmer · 08/03/2022 15:37

@Flapjacker48 true, Shannon would be a big hit. For a neutral country we are really are not neutral! The Russian minister in Ireland has been saying to Russian media that Ireland is "at the forefront of anti-Russian events". I'm not sure about the forefront of Europe on it, but crashing a truck through their embassy gates might get the message across!!

wordler · 08/03/2022 15:39

If Putin actually nuked the UK there would be nowhere safe to go as NATO would retaliate and non-NATO countries will have to pick a side etc.

LittleBrenda · 08/03/2022 15:41

Sell your house and buy a boat. Then you won't need passports or a new house where ever it is you are going.

Flapjacker48 · 08/03/2022 15:50

@irishfarmer It is actually quite an interesting (historical) question about what would the Republic have done if the cold war had gone hot in the later 70s/80s and there has been speculation around it - especially if there had been a fairly long breakdown in the international situation and a longer "transition to war" - you wonder what pressure the USA would have bought to bare for some use the airfields there (both for military planes and for the "airbridge to Europe") and the use of the coast for anti-submarine operations. Also the USSR would have been "concerned" about another "unksinkable" aircraft carrier" (which was how the USA viewed UK really) off Europe.

What? You think sea traffic isn’t subject to border controls? Confused

A life as international seafaring illegal immigrants sounds like a nice childhood. Hmm

newyearnewwname2022 · 08/03/2022 15:57

I wouldn’t worry about it - as everyone else has pointed out you wouldn’t have time to get them out before the bomb dropped. One of those situations where there’s really no point planning for something you’ll never be able to stop!

LittleBrenda · 08/03/2022 16:00

I thought the OP only considering absolutely ridiculous plans in her 'only being realistic' life. And my life at sea is no more preposterous than any other. Maybe a submarine would be better but more pricey.

If we were nuked, planes wouldn’t fly. Who would fly them? Who would do passport control? We would not be functioning as a country as we would know it. Maybe I have misunderstood the question.

Thoosa · 08/03/2022 16:05

Grin

I think OP is serious though, which is worrying.

Woollystockings · 08/03/2022 16:07

To be fair, there are different types of nuclear weapons. Their use doesn’t mean complete destruction of a country. Obviously, if you are in the strike zone, you’re not going to live. But other parts of the country would be ok.

GloriaSilver · 08/03/2022 16:09

But workers still wouldn’t be going to work. There would be no public transport surely, including planes?

True, but flights wouldn't be operating as normal.

If Putin decides to nuke the UK

When do you intend to get notification of his decision?

Echo previous posters advice to speak to your doctor about your anxiety.

And watch When The Wind Blows.

It's not going to happen but if it did, best to get it over with instead of the alternative.

Comedycook · 08/03/2022 16:19

@Ifeelgoodgoodgood

I think someone lives under a bridge.
You'd be surprised. There was a thread last week where women in the UK were crying and scared to take their children to nursery and school in case ww3 started
NinjaQueen · 08/03/2022 16:23

I am really struggling to follow the logic here!

ItsAlwaysThere · 08/03/2022 16:27

We don't have passports. Do you think people always should, even if unlikely to go abroad in the next few years? Just curious.
