Kids don't have passports

nearlyspringyay · 08/03/2022 11:56

Kids' passports have just gone for renewal, it's maxing me anxious.

If Putin decides to nuke the UK I'd like to try and get them out to family in non NATO countries if we could. Would they be able to without a passport, how do the logistics work?

I realise I'm extrapolating, I'm more concerned with ow it would work in practice, if planes were able to fly etc etc. Do the refugees coming from Ukraine need a passport? What do you do if you don't have one?

@Parpophone

If Putin nukes the UK, how exactly do you imagine you will be leaving?

If Russia invades the UK same question applies.

Have you not seen any of the footage from the Ukraine? They aren't rocking up to the airport and having a quick browse in the duty free are they?

I very much doubt you will be booking your family on a Ryanair flight FFS.

Quite.

You need to get a grip OP and learn a little about what NATO actually is. Hmm.

70kid · 08/03/2022 13:12

😂you will be lucky to get out the front door and into your car if we get nuked, let alone get a Ryan air flight somewhere
Honest go and see your doctor about your anxiety it’s way over the top

mumwon · 08/03/2022 13:14

If nuclear war broke out whatever make you think that only the UK would be affected? (disclaimer he won't do it because the moment he puts missiles in the air he would be slammed by missiles being sent towards him. aka he is not that stupid) & as pp said the time between them deciding to do this would be far to short to get a flight.
Op it is scary thought but Putin is more interested in gamesmanship & threatening the west to get what he wants, in Nuclear War everyone looses there are no winners. Which is why NATO won't defend the sky over Ukraine.

Sally872 · 08/03/2022 13:19

Yes. Having a passport is better than not having one.

I don't see the point in planning for nuclear war I hope it is unlikely if not I think worrying doesn't help.

But if you are making plans in your head then I think valid passport is one of the most basic things you could do.

INeedNewShoes · 08/03/2022 13:23

If Putin decides to have a go at the UK I don't think having a passport is going to make any difference unfortunately.

balalake · 08/03/2022 13:52

I think that your anxiety is the issue here.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 08/03/2022 13:57

Blimey. These threads fascinate me.
In the event of a nuclear war, where the hell would you go?
In 4 minutes?
And even if you had more warning, still where would you send them? I mean New Zealand?
The only prep I might consider is cyanide tablets.

Thoosa · 08/03/2022 14:00

In the event that Putin attacks us, there will be chaos at all the airports and ports, assuming he sends a “warning” missile to a corner of the British Isles first and doesn’t obliterate us straight off. None of that is likely, though.

It would be more constructive to seek MH support. Flowers

LabraDabraDoo · 08/03/2022 14:06

Famously, 4 minutes.

Takes me longer to remember where I've stored the passports.
Maybe you are better prepped than me. But even still, I wouldn't risk queueing at Duty Free.

nearlyspringyay · 08/03/2022 14:15

@astoundedgoat

What makes you think Putin is going to drop a nuclear bomb on the UK? I've been following Ukraine very closely, and there is absolutely nothing to suggest that he will do that, least of all in the space of the three weeks you'll be waiting for the passports.

You are being excessively anxious.

(Apart from anything else, even if he did try to bomb Ukraine, his equipment is in such poor condition that the thing probably woudn't even detonate.)

I'm being realistic rather than anxious, if there a threat I'd rather get my kids out.
OP posts:
Thoosa · 08/03/2022 14:19

If you really think it’s realistic, then you need to be sending them away as soon as they have passports and visas. Not waiting until the warning sounds. Are you prepared to do that? Have you investigated visas?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/03/2022 14:22

You're not being realistic though. Because in the event of a nuke we'd all be dead in 30 minutes.

averylongtimeago · 08/03/2022 14:33

I was 3 during the Cuban missile crisis.
My DM prepared by getting a considerable quantity of sleeping pills in stock, enough for both of us. They weren't needed then and won't be needed now.

I know it's scary, but perhaps you need to take a step back from the rolling news programs and social media.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/03/2022 14:37

If we get nuked, a passport will make little difference. I'd rather spend the money on some industrial strength sleeping pills for us all, cuddle up with DH and beautiful DD and just go to sleep and not wake up.

Fuckitsstillraining · 08/03/2022 14:38

@Woollystockings

Well, judging what the U.K. is requesting of Ukrainian refugees, you need more than passports - you need to get a visa, have family in the country, etc. Obviously, if Putin decided to nuke the U.K., it’d be too late for making plans for your dc then. You’ve no doubt seen how welcoming- not - the U.K. has been to refugees.
What are the UK requesting from people fleeing Ukraine? I'm Irish and just know that we've dropped visa requirements and are providing accommodation etc straight away, so far approx two thirds of arrivals are staying with friends/family but that is expected to change quickly. We have a rental property that's currently empty (we were considering selling it) so have registered that as available through the Red Cross. It's in a village with a national school, transport to the secondary school and larger towns, we know if the offer is taken up the locals will be very helpful and welcoming but it is quite rural. Is it difficult for Ukrainians to enter the UK right now, I would think there are far more settled there than here so there must be lots wanting to help family fleeing the war.
Christmas1988 · 08/03/2022 14:39

Buy a canoe instead of renewing passports!

Parpophone · 08/03/2022 14:42

I'm being realistic rather than anxious, if there a threat I'd rather get my kids out.

Explain exactly how you would get your kids out in 4 minutes?
What if they were at school at the time?
Are you going to keep them with you for every second from now on?

Nothing that you are considering is realistic by any stretch of the imagination.

Woollystockings · 08/03/2022 14:43

I'm being realistic rather than anxious, if there a threat I'd rather get my kids out.

How, though? And where to? And when? Which country do you think would accept them? Millions of Afghans and Syrians also would rather get their kids out of war zones too.

WaterTheBasil · 08/03/2022 14:44

If you honestly think you are being realistic then you should immediately apply for visas, sell your house and cars, launder the proceeds into cash and the day the passports arrive- leave. That's the only realistic plan.

Thinking you can just leave to another country after Putin says he's going to blow us up is not a realistic plan.

Wnikat · 08/03/2022 14:46

If there’s a nuclear war I think your chances of getting on a plane are fairly minimal anyway.

Quartz2208 · 08/03/2022 14:49

Out to where - it is called Mutually Assured Destruction for a reason. If it gets to that point there will be no point in running because there would be no easy escape that would offer any decent prospects or chance of a life

TheYearOfSmallThings · 08/03/2022 14:49

I think that your anxiety is the issue here.

Yup.

Nightlystroll · 08/03/2022 14:56

I'm being realistic rather than anxious,

😂😂😂

Scbchl · 08/03/2022 14:59

Sorry op but this train of thought is in no way being realistic.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 08/03/2022 15:02

Go now while you can
