JK Rowling matching donations to Ukraine appeal

@Viviennemary

Most people are just giving without the need to announcd it.
Firstly I disagree with this, a lot of people feel the need to announce here or on social media etc that they have donated. Secondly, it's great that people kind hearted enough and able to match donations say, I know now that if I donate a fiver it will be bumped up to a tenner; helps me choose where to donate to make the money go further!
Viviennemary · 08/03/2022 09:50

I just don't like her. She seems to think her opinion is more important because she is rich and writes children's books. And adult ones now too. I find her an irritating pain in the neck.

OutlookStalking · 08/03/2022 09:51

Wow she is amazing.

And yes I think some people are so set in their ways that "all feminists are evil anticompassionate people" that the truth sometimes does challenge.

I'm sure she'd think the same about you Smile

What is it you don't like - the fact that she's matching donations up to a million pounds from her personal funds?

The fact that she's been extremely successful due entirely to her own hard work and not due to nepotism or privilege?

The fact that she speaks up for women and girls in need and is endlessly kind and supportive to children who reach out to her?

Yeah, what a bitch.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/03/2022 09:57

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate

She is awesome.

Although I expect even this will be twisted in certain quarters with “oh she’s trying to buy back her reputation” type bs.“

Who cares? Most sensible people know what a good woman she is.

Viviennemary · 08/03/2022 09:57

How ridiculous. Talk about herd mentality.

I don't see how Viviennemary is attacking JKR by saying she doesn't like her Confused It is allowed to dislike someone.

legosnowqueen · 08/03/2022 10:16

She's incredible Thanks

I don't think anyone thinks it's not allowed. I think there's more a general bemusement as to why she thinks anyone is interested in her views or why she has bothered posting them on this thread.

I don't like mushrooms very much. Or spinach.

I get that, but if people shouldn't share their differing opinions on a thread on mumsnet then this would be a very boring place. The most interesting threads I see on mumsnet are always due to people having different opinions.

@DragonSnapCrimson It's the She seems to think her opinion is more important because she is rich and writes children's books. that is the issue, not just 'not liking her'. She goes that extra bit to cast aspersions on her motives and character, and it's out of jealousy and an inferiority complex.

Also understand this, however, Vivienne didn't state this as fact, they said "it seems" so again, their opinion and not necessarily down to jealousy or an inferiority complex, there are plenty of public figures I don't like but I'm not jealous of them.

TristesseDurera · 08/03/2022 10:29

Do you think Viviennemary's opinion that she doesn't like J K Rowling because she is 'an irritating pain in the neck' adds a lot to this thread then?

I'm going to go right out there and say that it doesn't.

However, if she set out deliberately to detract from and derail the discussion of what Lumos charity does and how JKR is matching all donations up to £1m, then she's doing an excellent job.

To be fair, she isn't just giving.

She has set up a number of funding streams, that she pays for all the admin for. She is publicising them, encouraging others to donate. She is matching those donations. She is using both the fame and fortune she made from writing to fund many, many charitable organisations.

Don't be such a curmudgeon.

SamphiretheStickerist · 08/03/2022 10:34

I don't like her books. Don't have an opinion on the woman as an individual. But I don't begrudge, or feel in any way threatened by or jealous of, her earned riches and what she chooses to do with them.

She is a modern philanthropist - uses all the media channels available to her. Again, don't be such a curmudgeon.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 08/03/2022 10:35

@LoopyDream

I don’t think compassionate people are transphobic, the replies here are very confusing
You sound very confused. People who want to protect womens rights and safe spaces aren't transphobic. They also aren't devoid of compassion. Well done JKR, absolutely love her!
pawpaws2022 · 08/03/2022 10:36

That's fab Smile
My work are matching donations too so I have made a donation via them (they're also donating 100k as a company)

The opinion of someone who will match a 1m donation with their own money is more important than your opinion.

The opinion of someone who will stand up for the rights of women to be safe despite that coming at a cost of personal safety is more important than your opinion.

It really is that simple.

awaynboilyurheid · 08/03/2022 10:57

Well said saucery and well done JK
It really some day when even helping orphans in a war zone gets you criticised!

ChipButtyCurrySauce · 08/03/2022 11:11

Thanks for posting. I've been wanting to donate something come payday (tomorrow!). Will do it through this charity.
