Btw. Reflect on these two pictures:

Optics matter.

Contrast the first with Zelensky who was up close to his countrymen and the jokes about Putin being distant and out of touch.

Now Contrast the first with the second from today. The man who was so scared of covid, he had mad protocols over seeing people (including Macron). And here he is sat in the middle of a big table surrounded by women.

This is conscious and deliberate.

Those comments about the silly table have clearly hit home.

I am getting increasingly annoyed that Liz Truss is enraging this situation further, she was already named as the person who increased the alert for nuclear weapons scaring half the world to death !! I totally agree NATO should speak as one !!

workisnotawolf · 05/03/2022 20:31

@RedToothBrush- the long table rather than being Czar like anymore would have become a symbol of isolation.

Putin the evil dictator - entirely on his own in the world.

HeadPain · 05/03/2022 20:32

France though. They were telling Russia "we've got nukes too". And Macron was on the phone to Putin, Putin phoned him actually, and Macron told him he was lying to himself etc.

Fiefofum · 05/03/2022 20:32

The women at that table look scared in the video footage, they are being very careful to keep blank faces but the eyes and body language isn’t great.

This is an interesting way to see the extent of Russian sanctions, the internet blocks there and social media: mobile.twitter.com/markhachman/status/1499617782299643907?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1499617782299643907%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1

@DuncinToffee

Uk government uses the word 'consider' a lot
In these sort of situations I like to ask what would Boris do.

And then I have a birthday party in a fridge.

I'm quite sure that Liz Truss would willingly nominate herself to be THE NATO spokes person, after all Putin listens to her.

I’ve felt very anxious today. I’m in awe of those who are keeping calm and rational about it all, but it all feels so hopeless at the moment (to me) I’m learning a lot about myself during this crisis. Always thought i was a glass half full person, but definitely finding out I’m a pessimist! (And started biting my nails again!) it does help to come on this thread though to get a grip of myself.

Lying to himself about the reasons for going into Ukraine, I think
RedToothBrush · 05/03/2022 20:35

Who was it who was saying this week that Foreign Secretary was top of the list of jobs she didn't want?

Maybe she's trying to remedy that.

youhadmeatjello · 05/03/2022 20:35

That’s what I’m curious about, other countries have made very strong statements too.

vera99 · 05/03/2022 20:38

@TheSillyMastiff massive lols - that's priced in.... some of us have long memories "Mark Oaten" but not whilst you're eating.

ChimChimeny · 05/03/2022 20:38

@HeadPain I didn't want to post unverified videos in amongst the more credible info but I suppose it cant hurt. One I found has already been posted, the woman hitting a Russian drone with a jar of cucumbers 😁

ChimChimeny · 05/03/2022 20:42

I heard one retired American veteran say at the outset that Ukraine would be well advised to surrender on day one and focus on maximising its position at the talks that would have to follow.

I wonder what would happen in the future if this had happened. There was much speculation early on that if this had gone as expected who would Putin go after next whereas as has been pointed out he won't have the cash/people/resources now to invade anyone else.

Also if Ukrainians have lived under Russian control before they presumably think they'd rather not again & are prepared to die to prevent it

ChimChimeny · 05/03/2022 20:43

Also Zelensky also needs an off ramp now, I can't see how he can capitulate anymore than Putin can

RedToothBrush · 05/03/2022 20:44

Re the Northern Russian Column.

Apparently the Ukranians deliberately flooded the area ahead of their advance, knowing it would be impossible to move heavy vehicles over it.

Was just chance with the weather being shit.

vera99 · 05/03/2022 20:46

I'm a glass half full person but that's because I've drunk the other half. When this horrible war is over you which it will be they are a shoo-in for Eurovision.

Tigersonvaseline · 05/03/2022 20:48

Maybe Putin is a Mumsnet Ter after all.

He was offended by " the man defended by the world's largest table

vera99 · 05/03/2022 20:52

You just know his feet never touch the ground when he's at a table. Used to have a horrible boss that was 5 foot nothing or so who had his chair maxed up to the top and his feet were a good foot off the ground.

Taytocrisps · 05/03/2022 20:53

@Livelovebehappy it was a beautiful spring day today so I went for a walk to a nearby castle. The sun had brought out lots of dogwalkers and families. The dogs and the kids were making the most of the walk and the fine weather. The antics of both groups (dogs and kids) put a smile on my face. Also, there was something rather re-assuring about the crumbling castle walls and flow of the river and the knowledge that both have survived several centuries and will hopefully still be there when I've shuffled off this mortal coil. Try to get some fresh air and gentle exercise and limit the amount of news/social media you're exposing yourself to.

PrescriptionWine · 05/03/2022 20:56

Anyone heard of a white flag attack in Russia? My partner is convinced this has happened and presented a video.

If so fuck - that’s scary

GallopingHighRoad · 05/03/2022 20:58

[quote workisnotawolf]@RedToothBrush- the long table rather than being Czar like anymore would have become a symbol of isolation.

Yet, he is not alone. He has tens of millions of people with him.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing"

Scared, grey, ashen or otherwise. This is why Russia will never win.

DGRossetti · 05/03/2022 21:00

Finally catching up.

Personally I think Putins rhetoric may have backfired. Certainly my response would be something along the lines of ...and what you gonna do about it ?. If he is genuinely taking this as a declaration of war, then any further actions by the West can't really hurt any more ... after all what's he going to do then ? Declare more war ?

He's gone from insouciance to bluster. Tells you a lot.
