Anyone else planning incase they need to leave London?

So we didn't think Putin would invade Ukraine. He has. Didn't think he would bomb schools and hospitals and houses. He has.

I know the NATO etc countries are trying for it not to develop into a bigger war.

However what if it does. Surely London would be on the target list? We have camping stuff, am thinking of getting it together so we can get away from London.

Is anyone else?

I think Putin might have noticed Faslane Grin

I was just coming on to say Faslane. London, no. too much russian money is tied up in property there - if he struck the UK it would be the military nuclear capability.

I wish these terrifying posts would stop.

I thought Putin would invade Ukraine. Am I the only one ?
Me too. And i thought he would bomb cities. I dont know why people think that when he had 100k soldiers on the border he would turn them around?!
SpikeySmooth · 04/03/2022 21:20

If Putin ordered a nuke on the SE of England I'll be glad of a quick death.

I usually hide these threads. Ignore the scaremongering. On Twitter my muted words list has grown exponentially. OP, step away from the Internet and do something else.

TellMeMoreHellebore · 04/03/2022 21:47

its too wet for camping. wait until summer op

LangClegsInSpace · 04/03/2022 22:00

I do think there should be space on MN for people to worry about this stuff and not just get sneering responses.

One poster's tinfoil-hatted catastrophising is another poster's level-headed 'what's the worst that could happen' anxiety management.

I miss the days when there was a difference between these things.

I miss humdrum and I doubt we'll ever get back there now. The new normal state appears to be bored terror, we've already had several years of it and it's exhausting and debilitating.

youhadmeatjello · 04/03/2022 22:29

I think there’s definitely something in the fact mass fear became the norm during Covid. It’s hard to switch it off once it’s infiltrated your brain, it just finds a new outlet.
I find the posts where people are wondering how they would euthanise their children really upsetting but do understand that for some it’s a coping mechanism to try to plan for every outcome.

NoToLandfill · 04/03/2022 22:52

Lang you've nailed it. There's just no humdrum any more. It feels like there just never will be again.

I know folks are sneering at me. It's not nice, but it is good to have a reality check. I only listen to radio 4, and its all that's on there at the moment.

I don't know how to not worry and care.

I live in a fairly rural part of West Yorkshire, I’m hoping we’d be okay here but I guess part of fall out zone.

There is the preppers board.
Motherofgorgons · 05/03/2022 06:55

Just saw that Russia has declared a ceasefire in the Ukraine to help civilians escape through a humanitarian corridor. Let's hope this improves things.

Pyewhacket · 05/03/2022 07:14

@NoToLandfill

Well no, seeing the way they've bombed Ukraine cities it's taking days.
Ukraine has a very small Air Force. We have both Typhoon and F35’s not to mention the American F15’s based in the UK plus our missile defence. That assumes Russian jets could get through NATO air defences. The Russians have about 4000 jets, NATO has 20,000. NATO would destroy Russia in a conventional war.
undermilkjug · 05/03/2022 07:41

Practically camping isn't the answer anyway.

The invasion in the Ukraine is likely to go the same way as Chechnya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam etc with nominal control but constant guerilla warfare.

If we assume that the Uk would be invaded (which is an incredibly unlikely assumption) there is no reason to think it would be significantly different here.

I would prefer to live in my house with a freezer, some electricity and an open fire in a close knit neighbourhood than abandon all that and live somewhere completely random with no means of food storage for longer than a day and a shelter which can't be locked or block gunfire.

A ceasefire in two small cities, it's no improvement, it's basically giving people passage to leave areas that Russia want to control, it's not a safe passage, it's a passage to homelessness and life as a refugee - don't dress it up as anything more
Motherofgorgons · 05/03/2022 08:55

Not dressing up anything @marieantoinehairnet but the level of terror on these boards is not normal, and I was trying to make the OP feel better about the many distressing images of children fleeing.

There was a thread last week where the poster's husband would not let her DC go to school. It can't only be me who thinks posters are working themselves up in anticipation of a very unlikely event and not doing their mental health any favours.

Billandben444 · 05/03/2022 09:24

I've just booked a Spanish villa for 2 weeks in August with multiple bathrooms, large pool and air con. I don't do camping.

Well that's lovely for you. There's quite a lot to be scared of for some of us, I have friends there and their lives a month ago were just like ours, so when you conclude that "we are alright jack" over here in Blighty, think of the bigger picture. At this early stage in WW2 no one knew it even was WW2.

I may be wrong but I think some thrive off the "drama", same during covid. It's like they almost want the worst to happen, I don't get it.

JanisMoplin · 05/03/2022 09:32

@marieantoinehairnet I sympathise with your friends, but the thread title was whether people are leaving London. I am not British and have escaped war and revolution actually, thanks to being a lifelong expat, so this isn't a case of "we are allright jack in Blighty". If you want to carry on imagining this is WW Three, go ahead.

hobstey · 05/03/2022 09:32

I don't think anyone is saying there is zero risk, more that trying to escape a nuclear fallout might be futile.

MrPickles73 · 05/03/2022 09:34

I don't think you can say that life in the Ukraine was normal a month ago. Day to day life was normal but they still had Russia on their doorstep who pinched crimea a couple of years back. I should think the average Ukrainian has been concerned for some time (years?).
NATO's main role these days is a deterrent to Russia attacking western Europe? That's the whole point of trident etc.
I think many people have got bogged down in COVID and NetZero And are not aware of some of the other global issues out there. Putin is an egotistical dictator.
Tbh like one of the other posters I was not that surprised when Russia attacked Ukraine. He has been mobilising troops for months. And from my understanding we have been training Ukrainian forces for a while?
If there is a nuclear attack I don't think a tent is the way to go..

hobstey · 05/03/2022 09:35

At this early stage in WW2 no one knew it even was WW2.

I also hate this "you didn't see it coming". Again same with covid, apparently some MNs knew of its dangers before WHO had talked about a new virus/pandemic. And I've seen posters say they could see it coming in Russia & would have fled Ukraine already. The height of privilege to assume it's easier to walk away from your entire life. 🙄

Motherofgorgons · 05/03/2022 09:47

@marieantoinehairnet Ok. If you are determined to see any calm on these boards as "we are alright jack", then there is not much I can say. Bowing out of this discussion as apparently any message other than "Leave London. Now!" is callous.

MrPickles73 · 05/03/2022 10:10

hobstey I'm not suggesting walking away is easy but suggesting life in Ukraine was normal a month ago seems a stretch?
