Latest claims from both sides about casualties
Ukraine's army regularly puts out updates on the damage it says it's inflicting on Russian forces, which continue to press on key cities, particularly in the south.

We should stress that the BBC can't verify this information, but the latest update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces says that approximately 9,000 Russian personnel have been killed or wounded.

It also says Ukrainian forces have destroyed:

217 tanks
90 artillery systems
31 helicopters
30 planes or other aircraft
For its part, Russia yesterday for the first time gave a specific number for casualties it had suffered in Ukraine, saying 498 Russian soldiers had died and nearly 1,600 had been wounded.

It said it had killed 2,870 Ukrainian soldiers and "nationalists".

I am really not sure that Russia's weaponry is as good as people say. I could be wrong. It suits the western military industrial complex to talk up the state of Russian armaments to get more money for their own.

There was a picture of an abandoned truck that was essentially hacked together bits of truck, gun carriage and defence which the russians were using today doing the rounds. Which you wouldn't expect for a well resourced army.

Obviously unverified but still does raise some questions and does fit with this idea of Russia not having the best equipped army to say the least.

Elephants, that was my understanding too. As far as I know, the Tsar Bomba-type bombs aren't usable because you have to attach them to an aircraft and you'd be shot down long before you reached your target.

Russia’s military spending is 62 billion dollars.
Military equipment requires specialist maintenance and parts so if not managed or serviced properly it can degrade quickly e.g. tyres on tanks failing.

Elephants, that was my understanding too. As far as I know, the Tsar Bomba-type bombs aren't usable because you have to attach them to an aircraft and you'd be shot down long before you reached your target.

They also had to attach a parachute to it so that it would fall slowly towards the ground so that the pilot could fly away in time.

Anyone unaware of the links between the Leave campaign, Conservative Party funding and Russia hasn’t been paying attention.

China indicated early on that they wanted Russia to negotiate ceasefire, I would quite like them to stay in that role as well.

But much like Test and Trace how much of that is actually spent on the military and how much is syphoned off into rich people's pockets?

I agree. And I think that the West didn't see the political instability risk which Ukraine carried, with both US and Russian having interests in it.

Probably a stupid question sorry, but what will the people of Russia make of all this banning? Are they told it's to protect them from propaganda, anti Russian sentiment, etc?

@Fiefofum when you say This view is based on Putin’s own words and his clearly stated dreams of expansion based on historical Russian territories is there a source for this, ie one of the actual speeches? Because in the last couple of weeks I have watched a lot of Putin's speeches and interviews over the last 6 or so years and I have not seen him say this. Thanks

Surely the people would start thinking its very odd. He's going to end up isolating Russia from the rest of the world.

The 2x RPG-7V are 1950's era weapons in frontline VDV paratrooper hands.

The RPG-16 (photo) was the 1970 VDV replacement weapon.

There was a professor on LBC this morning saying that because the Russians thought they were stationed around the Ukraine border as an exercise they reported back that all their equipment was fine but actually it's not and isn't all suitable for an actual war.

I imagine that if your reason for running a country is to asset strip it on a grand scale, you’re not going to pay too much attention to ensuring its armed forces are properly trained and equipped.
