Unbelievable. Thread 6 is almost full, to be found here : www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4495271-The-Invasion-is-ongoing-Part-6?pg=1

Still a fascinating and thoughtful set of documentation of our evolving thoughts, fears, questions, analyses and updates. And still a credit to the eyes, ears and knowledge of those on here.

Pinched from one poster on thread 6 whose name I can't recall:

Latest claims from both sides about casualties
Ukraine's army regularly puts out updates on the damage it says it's inflicting on Russian forces, which continue to press on key cities, particularly in the south.

We should stress that the BBC can't verify this information, but the latest update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces says that approximately 9,000 Russian personnel have been killed or wounded.

It also says Ukrainian forces have destroyed:

217 tanks
90 artillery systems
31 helicopters
30 planes or other aircraft
For its part, Russia yesterday for the first time gave a specific number for casualties it had suffered in Ukraine, saying 498 Russian soldiers had died and nearly 1,600 had been wounded.

It said it had killed 2,870 Ukrainian soldiers and "nationalists".

My husband's father was born in Lwow (which was, at that time, part of Poland). I see my husband being sad, even though his father died 50 years ago. I imagine the stories that he told his son, of WW2 etc. How difficult it is to watch this and know that perhaps we truly were a lucky generation.

Former CIA director I should say!

BigHuff · 03/03/2022 21:41

@MumbleCrumbs

John Brennan (former CIA) detective just told MSNBC he thinks Putin's days are numbered, probably to double digits. Hopefully he has some info we don't!
We live in hope.

No idea who'd want the job of being in charge of Russia - it is a mammoth task. On the other hand, it is impossible to do a worse job than Putin is doing at the moment.

We can agree on this!

Don't link gofundme links in this, there is legitimate charities to link to. It's not unknown now that there is a lot of chancers, it may be legit but considering the legit areas to donate money in a time of crisis, a gofundme is not where people should be directed IMO, happy to be deleted for it

I do hope Putins days are numbered either by ill health or other means and his cronies flee.

5 live reports today the most likely replacement is a more liberal man who is currently in prison. I applied but I forget his name and can't google it right now.

Let's hope that's the case

jgw1 · 03/03/2022 21:52

The BBC have posted a clip of former Ukrainian President Poroschenko speaking today in Kyiv.

This is a man who less than a month ago was being charged with corruption by Zelensky's government and is now clearly fighting for his country.

What Putin has got wrong more than anything else is not realising how deeply passionate about Ukraine Ukranians are.

[quote HappyWinter]Slightly off-topic, using less gas would be one way to reduce the amount of money going to Russia.

Turn down heating by 1C to reduce need for Russian imports, Europeans told
IEA says reducing temperature could help wean consumers off fuel that Russia is using as a weapon in Ukraine war

Hopefully most people will be doing this anyway as energy prices increase. I know that I've been really conscious since our fix ended to just put a jumper on instead of telling Alexa to boost the heating while working from home.

After some really helpful links on the previous thread I've been reading up about Transnistria. From what I can gather they are fairly Russia leaning. Does anyone know what the general sentiment is there? If the Russian army was to turn up and declare it Russian territory is that something the general populous would find agreeable or would they be met with resistance like in Ukraine?

He wrote (or got someone else to write) a twitter thread yesterday urging his fellow Russians to protest en masse. I thought that was a brave thing to do considering he's already in prison.

Just found the 7th one.

What's the current legal status for returning civilians e.g. After the conflict is over ?

Thanks for new thread, appreciate the info on here

What I'm struggling to understand, and feel quite angry about actually, is how Putin and Lavrov can make bold statements like "the west are brainwashed" when they literally control what their nation sees and hears on TV / Radio and Internet. And the irony of Lavrov comparing us to Hitler when they're bombing innocent civilians and committing heinous war crimes.
Do they actually think that people in the west with the information we have available are going to fall for this absolute SHIT if they repeat it enough? It makes me rage.

It isn't for the West its for Russia. They know we won't believe a word of it. Its all for their own population.
BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 03/03/2022 22:01

It's very frustrating to hear isn't it.

Justanotherlurker · 03/03/2022 22:01

I think this is related as a wider conversation.

1: This "must do something culture" is something that Russia has been pushing in the west for decades and is reflected in this type of article even being published
2: Why the BBC even decided an article was worthy, I know a large portion of the news is based on random twitter hot topics and journalists are chasing word counts, but still...

Look at this

@Justanotherlurker ah that was me. It was linked on a thread ( one of the ones mentioning trucks travelling with donated goods ) the other day before the DEC was more widely publicised so it was the one I donated to. It did seem legitimate but I was hesitant to mention it.

@MNHQ please delete my post if directing to a gofundMe site is not allowed.

Honestly this type of thing only plays into the Kremlins hands.

These young men our are enemy, they know exactly what they are doing & if Putin ordered, they'd be in Latvia killing our soldiers and i bet your views would do an about turn

Teenage conscripts are not my enemy.

Greattimestroubledtimes · 03/03/2022 22:03

It is the most extraordinary gaslighting. As though they don't even expect us to believe it.
