Been waiting for police for nearly 5 hours

I called 999. They know if I call what it’s about and I need urgent police assistance
That was at 9pm
Called back at 10.30 - assured they’ll visit and said they’re busy
At what point do I give up? I have to be up in 4.5 hours for work! Not that I feel I could sleep anyway after what happened.

If you’re able to ‘give up’ and go to bed, how urgently could you need police assistance

lifeissweet · 03/03/2022 01:55

Are you in immediate danger, OP?

Realitea · 03/03/2022 01:56

It’s very urgent. But I feel awful, I’ve been up since 6am working. I don’t feel safe. I’ve been on hold to 101 for an hour now just hoping for an update

@lifeissweet I think so. I don’t know. I need them to check that for me really.

I have a stalker. They have an injunction. I got back from work and they were waiting for me in the dark at my house. I got into my house and locked the door but had to get past them first. I did have a panic alarm from the police but they can only loan them for a month and took it back just the other day. Typical.

You poor thing. Bugger 101, ring 999, hits urgent.

Realitea · 03/03/2022 02:12

I tried 999 and they said they’ll be here but that was five hours ago. Maybe I should call 999 again for an update? Not sure if I can do that

Bluesparkled · 03/03/2022 02:16

I don’t know either but I’d probably try it.

Nat94 · 03/03/2022 02:17

So sad to hear this. I hope you get through all this the best you can.

Realitea · 03/03/2022 02:22

I finally got through to 101. They said they’re extremely short staffed and will be here at some point this morning. Ergh. Relieved but so, so tired.

Omg op. I hope you are okay . Is there a neighbor you could call?

HeadPain · 03/03/2022 02:35

"I did have a panic alarm from the police but they can only loan them for a month"

How bloody stupid is this! Why does our country do stupid shit like this

TerriblyNaice · 03/03/2022 02:36

Bless you OP.
Hope you at least get some sleep Flowers

Realitea · 03/03/2022 02:41

@HeadPain - I know! Makes no sense at all. As if crime stops after thirty days.
Hopefully they won’t be too much longer now

This has really upset me . Op you need to develop a support system of people near you who would be able to pop round and see you. I'm assuming you live alone

Sorchamarie · 03/03/2022 02:45

How awful. Poor you 😢 I just wanted to offer some sympathy while you wait. I'm really sorry you're having to deal with such a horrible situation. I really hope they give you a panic button back at least!

peachy3 · 03/03/2022 02:54

That’s terrifying OP. I hope they come to you ASAP, in the meantime is there anyone who lives close by you can rely on for help if anything does happen? I do hope said stalker has pissed off and fallen into a really really deep well or something, that’d be nice.

How is that helpful? The police are paid to do a job, for God’s sake. OP, if I was in your situation I would have self defence classes, get a baseball bat for at home and a pepper spray or some kind of weapon to carry with me. But get trained in how to not get it snatched and used against me. If the police are too understaffed and underfunded to do their job we all need to learn self defence and be allowed weapons, it’s completely unethical to just leave us to the wolves.
lifeissweet · 03/03/2022 03:52

I can't wrap my head round how this is happening when there is a very well publicised and widespread epidemic of violence against women.

Stalking is dangerous, but so badly managed. It's not enough that it's threatening and frightening - action seems to happen far too late. Often after the damage is done.

It's not news that this is dangerous and women have their lives ruined or lost to it.

I'm sorry, OP. I know that's not helpful. I'm just angry for you.

Are you ok for now? Do you feel secure?

Katya213 · 03/03/2022 04:40

I’m actually afraid for you and I hope the police turn up soon.

This comment is really unfair regardless of your experience. Injunctions aren’t just thrown around for fun and neither are panic alarms. There will have been a period of escalating behaviour. It’s not fair to make the op feel bad about utilising a service that should be there for her, so she is protected. And, of course, I feel you should have been able to access the support you needed as well.

Op, I strongly believe you aren’t wasting police time and this is an emergency.

AlistairCamel · 03/03/2022 05:05

notagoodnight sorry I read your comment wrong and you were able to access the support needed. But my point stands that I struggle to see how this isn’t an emergency.

More than one type of incident can require immediate police attendance.

Stalking is an incredibly dangerous offence. And injunctions don't come from someone being around once or twice.

What happened to you was awful.

Having a stalker is also horrific. You can struggle with empathy all you want but the police don't hand out panic alarms like sweets.

You may also like to check up on the sorts of crimes that come with a history of stalking. If you've got the secret to know when the "just" stalking, as it appears you think it is, turns to something else, please do share. I'm sure OP would love to know she's got nothing to fear from this guy who the police have already deemed a threat. And when she should start to worry.
