Russia puts its nuclear deterrent on high alert

Does anyone know what that actually means? Is he threatening nuclear war?

OP posts:
SpringCalling · 27/02/2022 15:28

@IcyWinterWonderland well I remember when the Chernobyl explosion took place , I lived in Yorkshire where low levels of radiation were recorded on the moors.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 27/02/2022 15:28

It will not happen.
This, in my mind is a dirty tactic by Putin.
Talk are being set up between Ukraine and Russia. This is Putin saying 'do as I say or I press the button'
He wants the world to be scared so Ukraine, Nato give him what he wants.

I think anyway...

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 27/02/2022 15:29

@GrandRapids

Liz Truss needs to shut the fuck up
No she bloody doesn’t ffs! Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania are in his sights as will be Finland and Sweden if they join NATO. He’s an unstoppable lunatic, war criminal and no one can stop him doing whatever he likes now IMO.
daytriptovulcan · 27/02/2022 15:30

This is part of the sophistication psychological intimidation of enemies Putin uses.
It's cheap at the price, if he can persuade everyone to stand down. But running away from a bully in the long term won't work for us.

RunningFromInsanity · 27/02/2022 15:30

They aren’t tampering with the radiation at Chernobyl, all the troops and movement is stirring up the ground and soil that obviously still has radiation in it, hence the increased levels.

ladygindiva · 27/02/2022 15:31

@Viviennemary

Yes he is threatening us. If he gets away with it he will do the same again next time hd decides to invade a country. I think Russia should be booted out of the UN. Trump would have sorted him out IMHO.
Are you on glue? Trump was so far up his arse it was embarrassing
ABitOfAShitShow · 27/02/2022 15:31

@hilbil21 Ah, I know. I do. I had a panic attack and took 40mg of propanalol to do a work presentation last week. Which there’s absolutely no threat from. So I do understand how you can’t just rationalise your way out of things. 😘

Viviennemary · 27/02/2022 15:32

There was none of this on Trump's watch.

hilbil21 · 27/02/2022 15:32

I think it's maybe heightened because my husband works offshore and he's away just now (just off Norway) so it's just me and my 6 year old autistic son here. 7 miles away from Faslane lol Grin

notimagain · 27/02/2022 15:33

@Pedallleur

Nukes are always on alert. The US fly regular patterns with nuclear weapons. A circular path around the US and a US to Europe.

Not sure what the state of play is today with the current state of tension but routine airborne alert by the Strategic Air Command (operated sort of in the way you describe) stopped in the very late 1960s due to costs and also after accidents involving nuclear armed B-52s, one in Greenland and a much more high profile one over the Mediterranean off Palomares in Spain.

The US day to day round the clock strategic deterrent since then has been in the hands of submarines and the land based missile force.

Chocaholic9 · 27/02/2022 15:33

Having known and dealt with a lot of narcissists, to me this feels like a way to manipulate. Things are not going his way, he's having a hard time dealing with his narcissistic rage as a result.

It gives him power to scare people by saying these things. Nuclear war would not only kill a lot of people but poison the world and the seas. I don't think he would want to 'poison his own well' and that of his children too.

BettyBag · 27/02/2022 15:34

@Viviennemary

There was none of this on Trump's watch.
That's because they thought they could get what they wanted (a pro Russian Ukrainian government and a less threatening NATO) in other ways.
RunningFromInsanity · 27/02/2022 15:34

@ladygindiva Yeah but you know he would have done some strikes by now…

Choccy21 · 27/02/2022 15:36

Sounds daft maybe, but can Putin be arrested ? Breaking international law? War crimes?
Remember Kosovo, Milosovich? He was tried at the Hague and jailed.
Even Saddam Hussein was hung in Iraq.

IcyWinterWonderland · 27/02/2022 15:36

@RunningFromInsanity I read on BBC news that Russian forces had 'Seized Chernobyl' and 'taken control of the nuclear plant'.
www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-60528828
I never said they were tampering with the radiation. I said IF they tamper with it.

Horological · 27/02/2022 15:36

It's so British to imagine that Putin, or any other Russian, has any idea who Liz Truss is, or cares what she says. The UK is an extremely minor, unimportant country on a world scale, even on a European scale.

If you really want to know what is going on, please take time to read what the powerful countries (like China or Germany) are saying or doing. Also, take time to read about what Russians think about this situation. They have a totally, totally different perspective to most of us. I don't think their perspective is correct but I do think people need to find out what it is. Putin (like Trump) is not a madman. Hate him or not, he's not a madman. Underestimating people like Trump and Putin takes you to these places.

Most people on this thread need to do some proper reading, including other news sources like Russia Today. You can't hope to understand what's going on if you only read about the UK perspective.

Lampface · 27/02/2022 15:37

I don't think it's a bad thing to be worried. I'm a rational person but we have no reason to believe that Putin is. A week ago people were saying he wouldn't invade Ukraine.

chaosrabbitland · 27/02/2022 15:37

its very frightning and i cope with it by trying to ignore it , cant face looking at the news , im so sick of reading about war , and innocent people being killed , buildings being razed to the ground , its all so utterly pointless and has no purpose that i can see

Cognoscenti · 27/02/2022 15:39

BBC news states on their homepage "The move does not mean Russia intends to use the weapons".
It doesn't mean a nuclear war is imminent, or even likely. It's his way of protecting himself, the UK also has a constant nuclear deterrent (CASD).
He is a bully trying to scare people, and it's clearly working very well.

BettyBag · 27/02/2022 15:39

That just isn't true. Maybe on this board but the US has been saying he is going to invade for months. Since 2016 there have been serious concerns he will invade.

You're saying we need to read Russian propaganda? Hmm.
ClaudineClare · 27/02/2022 15:40

Putin is not going to nuke anyone. What would be the point? It is posturing. Willy waving on a grand scale

croquetas · 27/02/2022 15:40

I'm not worried. He cannot nuke Ukraine, the Fallout will kill thousands of Russian - they are that close.

Again, missile defence and nuclear deterrence capabilities within NATO is so advance that Russia will be worse off in retaliatory attacks. Putin knows it!

I won't be surprised if one of his generals take him out.

Lampface · 27/02/2022 15:41

@BettyBag that's my point - people on this board were saying the invasion wouldn't happen.

NorthGirlie · 27/02/2022 15:42
