Good for Germany

Alexandra2001 · 26/02/2022 18:36

Why are the Russian Ambassadors still here across the West?

and why are we refusing Ukrainian refugees?

cakeorwine · 26/02/2022 18:36

From the Guardian

A total of 2,692 people have been detained in anti-war protests in Russia in the last three days, according to the protest monitoring site OVD-Info.

At least 1,370 of them were detained in protests in Moscow, CNN reported.

More than 1,800 people were arrested at rallies across the country on Thursday night, after Russians protested on the streets of Moscow, St Petersburg and more than 50 other Russian cities on Thursday evening.
Well well well, apparently Germany is going to send 1000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stingers to Ukraine

I guess they're finally waking up!

(Olaf Scholz's official Twitter: twitter.com/Bundeskanzler/status/1497632817450266632?s=20&t=x1T-IdmSxMwERRMuOx30oQ)
I’m glad they’re joining in now

Gingerwarthog · 26/02/2022 18:38

They've also approved the delivery of 400 RPGs from the Netherlands to Ukraine.
So- huge policy shift from Germany.

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2022 18:40

I heard a spokesperson say they realised they’d got it wrong a few days ago and we’re ready to shift from diplomacy to providing weapons

So at least the acknowledgment was there

Febrier · 26/02/2022 18:40

I know many things can be faked but I think we might know if Boris J or Rees-Mogg (for eg) had been captured and a stand in was being used

That's not what a Deep Fake is Confused

It would be bloody hard for a computer generated version of Johnson though.

But deep fakes are a new worry.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 26/02/2022 18:49

Did the protests here stop the Iraq war?

There have been mass protests against Putin in 2020 and in 2021. Google Khabarovsk.

workisnotawolf · 26/02/2022 18:50

Germany being more involved is symbolic too and a very good sign. They have sat on the fence regarding conflicts for many, many years but this conflict, Germany being in part a former satellite state of the Soviet Union, directly affects the living memory of their population. There is a lot of fear and sentiment currently amongst many Eastern European countries that are former Soviet Union states. It is good that the politicians in Germany are finally recognising the importance of this.

User1isnotavailable · 26/02/2022 18:52

@cakeorwine

Where are the nice people of Russia. Any on here. What do you have to say about your leader and the actions of YOUR country

In Germany, people who resisted Hitler were guillotined in summary executions.

In Russia, they are are arrested and face consequences.

Would you protest knowing the consequences?

Yes I would.

Turning the other way is being complicit in the killing of innocents.

There are also good reasons for Germany being reluctant to interfere in Ukrainian affairs and to be seen to come into conflict with Russia. Presumably all the 'denazification' rhetoric from Putin is, in part, meant to play on that.

Russia seems to have a very long memory.

Canadians are dumping Russian Vodka and refusing to sell it. They import a huge amount.

Time for the World to stand up and refuse to buy Russian goods.

@Ramalamadingdongs

They are utterly desperate for help and the world is just standing by watching. I am ashamed to be British.
The World mobilises very slowly.

There are other ways to fight than in the streets. No trade. Social outcasts. Sporting outcasts. Financial outcasts by stopping trade with them and freezing bank accounts and assets.

Mass cyber attacks on Russian sites to hit back at what they do. Play Ukraine music over Russian sites. Hit their websites with pro Ukraine messages.

Brilliant news.

That's what I mean. The mobilisation of the internet. All join together and fight the Russians in other ways.

OK. Excuse my ignorance (because old and not up with the tech) and apologies. I've learned something, thank you!

I can't think of anything I buy from Russia, apart from the caviar obviously.
cakeorwine · 26/02/2022 19:01

That's easy to say. The history of occupation shows that most people don't resist or protest and just try to survive.

Protest is being reduced in this country. 10 years in jail for defacing a statue. I am sure that will put people off.

I hate to imagine what happens to protestors in Russia and its puppet states.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 26/02/2022 19:01

'Russian Vodka' around here is mainly from Scotland or Warrington I think.

UKRAINEwearewithyou · 26/02/2022 19:01

@NobodysGonnaKnow

First post on this thread. Hello.

I just wanted to come and write what a brave man Volodymyr Zelensky is. Honestly seeing one of the videos this morning where he’d survived the night’s onslaught and refused to be airlifted to safety by the US. What an absolute hero and Putin must be furious.

He is a hero. He knows he will probably die but he fights on.

Most of the free world is behind him and willing him on.

Imabouttoexplode · 26/02/2022 19:02

@User1isnotavailable

Do the Russian people have no backbone, do they support their leader? I would assume they support Putin because they carry on whist he invades another country.

Putin is one man. One man. Do the people of Russia support him. It appears they do since the whole country could if they chose to do something. They sit silently whilst their country invades another, killing innocent people.

Russian people should be ashamed of their country. More sanctions, more condemnation of their actions until they realise that what Putin is doing is either in their names or not.

Could say that about Boris Johnson though. Much of the UK despise the lying, cheating, corrupt clown but there's eff all we can do to get him out of power right now.
CPL593H · 26/02/2022 19:02

(I'm actually laughing at my own ridiculousness for thinking they would use a stand in) (agree though Boris would be a challenge either way)

workisnotawolf · 26/02/2022 19:04

Lots of large international law firms have offices in Moscow, for example, Freshfields, Baker & McKenzie, Clifford Chance etc. Are these Moscow law firms going to continue providing advice? Surely they all talk directly to the London or US office, if so, and everyone there will know what is going on and they will have close links to Russian government too. Is Russia closing all these things down? I doubt they will have time to. If every person in UK or US emails their Russian contacts with international news surely the Russian government cannot intercept it all?

You've obviously not seen the animated 'Animal Farm' then. There's a dead-ringer for him on that, nobody could see the difference.
