The crazy thing is that some of the units being destroyed/captured are Rosgvardia, that is not regular military, they are national guard or riot police. That's normally who you send in after you've won and occupied a place, to keep the people under control.

This is another reason people think the Russians assumed they'd have a quick victory, because they sent these units out so early. Now they're just getting hammered.

Thanks for the answer notimagain.

That's interesting dreamingbohemian, because of course it's not just the taking/conquering of a Country it is the holding of it that is crucial history has proven time and time again how difficult that is in terms of the invaders resources and input even if there is a puppet regime in place that is on side with the invaders.

I have Russian friends that care very much about Ukraine and do not want this, I also have others that tell me the situation is not straight forward, they do not feel Putin has been taken seriously and his Nato requests have been ignored. Not exactly sympathisers but understanding the shades of grey, they may not even feel they can talk about it given the level of feeling in this country, but they all look so very sad about the loss of life on both sides.

The next few hours look imperative for Kyiv.

Thank you for all of your posts everyone, I have enjoyed reading everyone's view and information/updates. I even welcome the ones supporting Russia provided they are genuine and polite.

Germany is a total shocker. You would think given everything that has happened they would be the first to step up. Japan have offered energy to Europe, and other countries. So it is not all about gas is my view, and that hasn't stopped all the other dependent countries from doing the right thing.

dreamingbohemian · 26/02/2022 17:20

Exactly @BronwenFrideswide

Even if Russia wins this part of the war let's say it takes Kyiv and installs a puppet regime it can't just go home. It will have to keep an occupation force in place for a long time, and all the while a Ukrainian insurgency heavily funded by NATO states across the border will be mounting resistance.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 26/02/2022 17:22

This is a really great thread :)

That's a good link thanks

Place marking. I agree this thread is very interesting.

blueshoes · 26/02/2022 17:27

The occupation of Ukraine by Russia (let's hope it never gets to that, go Ukraine!) will be Russia's Afghanistan. Won't that be ironic.

BronwenFrideswide · 26/02/2022 17:31

Russia has already had their own Afghanistan back in the 1980's.

Hmm

Just how much do you know about modern Russian history?

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 26/02/2022 17:33

The Russians are being told that this is 'peacekeeping' mission to liberate the Ukrainians of a hostile Nazi government, they have been reassured over and over again on state TV that the bombardment has been strictly confined to essential military zones, as a special and careful mission. But even in Russia children and teenagers have access to social media and are able to see the truth. Maybe many Russians are in total denial? It must be horrendous to know your country is bombing your neighbours and relatives given the historical links.

You'd hope that if more of Ukraine fell, that there would be resistance from soldiers in the West of the country with support of arms and probably 'international volunteers' - which would lead to Russia finding it very hard to maintain its grip on a country.

Along with punishing sanctions, isolation as a pariah state and other countries joining NATO.

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/02/2022 17:35

The international reaction is galvanising against Russia, as the withdrawal of sporting events, etc shows. Making it a pariah state could give the Russian populace impetus to call for regime change and make those close to Putin rethink things.

cakeorwine · 26/02/2022 17:37

Less access now with Twitter and Facebook being blocked.

Which in itself is a signal to young people that they are not being told stuff.

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/02/2022 17:37

Russia has blocked Twitter and Facebook. The average Russian with a smart phone must surely realise this is censorship for very dubious reasons.

Access to Facebook and Twitter has been restricted, but there seems to be Russian content still appearing on tiktok - which all seems to be very much putin is doing this, not us (though obviously tiktok very much controls what you see)

So I’d assume people are also seeing the content coming from Ukraine

Listening to R4 today people talking about how this stuff matters

Praying this is so.

Well that’s something Anonymous could do. I’m sure that their hackers and Russian non-government hackers communicate. They can create websites as well as take them down. Let the Russian people see what’s being done in their names.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 26/02/2022 17:45

Tik Tok, insta and snap still running though, not to mention the sharing of footage between people. It is almost impossible to keep a lid on information these days.

I've just seen on the news Anonymous have taken down the kremlin websites, hopefully for a while and they are playing Ukrainian music through websites and radio stations.
Ncwinc · 26/02/2022 17:47

I really hope so.

Itsnotover · 26/02/2022 17:49

Has anyone else seen that total dickhead Lord Miles Routledge who is in Ukraine taking selfies of himself in a war zone and posting them on Twitter with captions like ‘lovely stuff’?
