Thanks for info

I wanted to check how much was energy related for Germany rather than bad move generally.

Alexandra2001 · 26/02/2022 15:57

I read prior to this invasion, Russia got almost $1 trillion extra due to gas and oil price rises - this will fund their war for a very long time.

We are tinkering around the ages here, on one hand "Don't challenge Putin or he'll nuke us, on the other lets really really hurt him financially..."
if he so unstable he would use nuclear weapons if we used military means, he'd do the same if we cripple Russia economically wont he?

There are certainly no easy answers here but as we are apparently supplying Ukraine with weapons etc (directly against Putins threat not to interfere) but we are all still here, i think we need to act more decisively.

TheSillyMastiff · 26/02/2022 16:00

Thing is you don't even have to ban them from SWIFT. All you have to do is stop them clearing certain currency.

Take the euro, the sterling, the dollar off them. If they can't trade in those cash values and clear them through the banking system it's a mute point.

LostThePot · 26/02/2022 16:03

I think Germany imports 50% of its gas supply from Russia

Tigersonvaseline · 26/02/2022 16:05

But also countries wouldn't get their money
from the Russians.

Great if they are nearly there

Alexandra2001 · 26/02/2022 16:05

We'd be far better off offering more and better support for the Ukrainians.

Really cracking down on Russian money in the West (thought to be $300 billion)

Even the height of the Cold War, the USSR continued to trade raw materials - bizaire as it seems!

Making China and Russia allies may not be a great idea longer term.

Gingerwarthog · 26/02/2022 16:11

Watching BBC news - Ukrainian women and teenagers making Molotov cocktails in the East of the country. The women have told the reporter (Sarah Rainsford) that it's just like cooking but it's a way of doing something, keeping busy.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 26/02/2022 16:20

There is nothing like a common enemy to bring people together.

Tigersonvaseline · 26/02/2022 16:24

I've got the normal flight radar app
Does anyone know what's the military flight ones is please

Febrier · 26/02/2022 16:31

We should worry less about lobbying Germany and worry more about lobbying the Conservative Party re party donations and London properties.

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2022 16:33

What has greater impact on Putin?

Does he care about London properties and donations as much as SWIFT? Or other actions

[quote notimagain]@blueshoes

NATO troops, aircraft etc have been flooding into the region for many weeks now….another tranche was announced yesterday.

Thank you, notimagain, Tigersonvaseline and GirlOnACountrySong, that is reassuring as a backstop.

itsgettingweird · 26/02/2022 16:36

Many suspect the Russians planned/provisioned/fueled up for a 24-48 hour campaign….

I think there's truth is this. Lots of news reporters have said Russia would have expected the invasion to go much quicker and be less of a fight.

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2022 16:37

Plus we could use Russians who stand with us and Ukraine

Not every Russian is for Putin’s actions

If they say they are against Putin should they still go? Or do we build a picture of Putin alone even amongst most of his people..

Alexandra2001 · 26/02/2022 16:37

Marsha If Putin cared about Swift, he wouldn't have invaded & its why he has built huge amounts of foreign currency reserves for this scenario.

A former President of Ukraine is on Sky appealing for weapons and body armour, he was there in Ukraine armed & ready to fight.

By the time Swift made a difference, Putin will be in Kyiv.

This is one alternative that often shows more military stuff than Flight radar is:

globe.adsbexchange.com/?icao=407031

Of course like Flight radar it is not going to show much if anything over the Ukraine ATM.

notimagain · 26/02/2022 16:38

That link wasn’t the best, this one should be “cleaner”:

Yes. Zelensky has done a masterful job in mobilising the nation.
BronwenFrideswide · 26/02/2022 16:47

Of course we would assume today's invasion would have been carefully planned and prepared for, but it's entirely possible it was not. The forces sent to Ukraine/Belarus were ostensibly sent for short-term exercises. It would have been a very small circle around Putin that planned for invasion instead, and it's entirely possible they are not that competent, or that Putin overrode their advice (as Hitler and Stalin both did).

Military analysts have been saying for a long time that Russia's military is much improved but still has serious flaws, and it's been a very long time since Russia engaged in a large-scale ground campaign. It's not unthinkable that they're making some major mistakes.

One of the Russian soldiers pictured as being captured by the Ukranian forces looked incredibly young, perhaps a number of them are young and inexperienced.

Russian weaponry seems to be vastly improved but does that also apply to the general troops?

cakeorwine · 26/02/2022 16:51

Supply chains are so important in battles. During the Battle of the Bulge, German tanks were hindered by their dependancy on fuel and the aim was to capture Allied fuel supplies.

If you haven't got the logistics and if your supply chains are attacked, your attack slows down.

You can attack with tanks but you need boots on the ground. Who are vulnerable to stubborn resistance.

TheHoptimist · 26/02/2022 16:52

Just listened to a group of Russians explaining to a group of friends how all thd images of Ukraine in the uk press have been doctored (out for lunch in central London which is very very Russian heavy this week)

VerandaSanta · 26/02/2022 16:53

Which websites are everyone using please? I find BBC a little slow.

Can you give any more details? This is really interesting (and worrying).
notimagain · 26/02/2022 16:57

It’s a mix..there are definitely units/branches of their forces who are very capable.

OTOH it looks like it’s poor darned conscripts who have generally been at the front so far, though there are reports this afternoon that a Russian senior’ish regular officer has been captured.
