Is anyone else monitoring the air traffic on FlightRadar24? There was an 8 minute wait to get on to the website!

Lots of military aircraft.

Be interesting to see if there’s movement along Belarusian border with the ‘talks’ happening today.

TheRealHousewife · 28/02/2022 09:46
@TheRealHousewife Freedar and Military Freedar are two other apps, not connected to Flightradar24
Thank you @BabbleBee 👍

Yellow85 · 28/02/2022 09:47

Anyone know if airspace closes straight away or if it take some time to officially ‘close’ it? Example attached of aircraft from Russia entering Latvia. Is it a bit like the Oligarch sanctions where it goes to legal before it’s enforceable?

Thank you @Crankley and @notimagain 👍

Tiredmumno1 · 28/02/2022 11:42

There are a couple of F15 planes about, one over the uk, and one close to the uk.

Crankley · 28/02/2022 12:53

Two USAF aircraft to west of Ukraine, I think the one from Germany is going to refuel the one fron England base.

It can vary..details go out to ATC and operators via a “coded” message known as a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen …. And yes, Airmen might change to something else before too long…

The eurocontrol comprehensive list of NOTAMS was published last night..

www.public.nm.eurocontrol.int/PUBPORTAL/gateway/spec/PORTAL.25.0.0.7.62/_res/21616/RussianCarriers.pdf?APPID=headline_news

Field B) gives is the date time group for the moment the NOTAM beomes effective, so for example for EBBU (Budpest airspace or “Flight Information Region, FIR) it was

2202271659

Which translates as 2022 02 27 1659 UTC…..

Others may have different start times.

Yellow85 · 28/02/2022 13:19

@notimagain wow thanks for that!!

Looks like SU7236 is diverting to Istanbul and is definitely not reading to Verona. Have the Italians refused to allow it into their airspace?

Tigersonvaseline · 28/02/2022 18:18

Was it rare, I'm new to this?
On Sunday I happened to see a Stratotanker which I always see around Romania however the other plane right next to it was a stealth craft?
I'e what it's refueling? It was there for minuets turn the stealthy went..

Hard to know without seeing the event that you witnessed

Aircraft that do not show on Flight radar aren’t really something genuinely stealthy, they simply have not got the device turned on (the transponder) that sends the data out that Air Traffic Control and flight radar uses for tracking purposes. Transponder off= no aircraft…anything military flying near the Ukraine border is not going to want to be tracked…

So I guess one possibility possibility is that the aircraft being refueled had it’s transponder on for some reasons for a few seconds, so it appeared on the screen, then it got turned off, and so it disappeared from flight radar.

Interesting flight pattern on this American one. Any theories?

Upthread a PP commented that the Stratotanker may have been refuelling drones, iirc.
cakeorwine · 28/02/2022 23:09

@Emmelina

I noticed that too. Nice hexagons.

We’ve been discussing this on one of the more general threads.

It’s an odd pattern, but consistent and it’s the same on couple of the tracker sites so I don’t think it’s a tracking or software glitch.

Last time looked it was up at 17000 feet but only doing about 70 knots, which makes me think it’s one of the smaller drones…

There's a discussion of a surveillance drone (over the George Floyd protests in Minneapolis) taking a hexagonal path here.

Bumping for tonight, just the usual suspects out there.

The Twitter account following the oligarch jets is fun though - twitter.com/RUOligarchJets?s=20&t=4DM6k8QB4gMSk_blx2xKtg
