Is anyone else monitoring the air traffic on FlightRadar24? There was an 8 minute wait to get on to the website!

Lots of military aircraft.

@CaveMum (or anyone else) can you ask your DH why the USAF leave their trackers on please?

Is it Psychological warfare to make Putin's Int worry about whom they are refuelling?

CaveMum · 04/03/2022 19:19

Who knows why they leave them on, they certainly don’t always leave them on as it’s common to see one suddenly “appear” on radar.

I guess with a tanker it’s not going to “do” anything (it’s not an attack aircraft) so there’s less need.

I think it's partially a show of power. The Russians would very quickly be able to spot them anyway, so hiding them from the trackers probably makes little difference.
If the Russians did decide to shoot them down then that would be taken as declaration of war.

I'd be more worried if I was in one of those planes that you'd get a fanatic who'd think they'd be a Russian hero and try playing a lone hand.

Tigersonvaseline · 04/03/2022 19:46

I saw them earlier today

BabbleBee · 04/03/2022 20:05

@FatFucker not far from Berlin at the moment. CFC4221.

BabbleBee · 04/03/2022 20:08

RainbowZebraWarrior · 04/03/2022 20:12

@wizzywig

How do you know who's jets they are?
Sorry for the shit quality. I'm reading on my phone and was on FR24 on my ipad. Basically if you click on the plane icon, it gives you the detail

What's the difference between yellow and blue planes?

LilyRed · 04/03/2022 20:52

Aircraft shown as blue are being tracked by satellite rather than transponder.

LilyRed · 04/03/2022 20:56

PS note they are usually found over large bodies of water - oceans etc

The “trackers” (aka transponder with other bits) are a requirement to operate in most civilian controlled airspace…if you look at where the tankers are most of the time they are very adjacent to or actually in airspace being used by civil traffic, so civil ATC need to keep an accurate eye on their position.

BTW general point, the pattern tankers fly is known as a “towline” it is definitely not a loop..Shock

I've got a Royal Air Canada Hercules above me now. I'm on the Newcastle airport flight path. (about 8 miles away)

Garfieldismyspiritanimal · 04/03/2022 22:04

That Air Canada one has come from Poland - looks to be headed back home. Perhaps dropping resources ?

Tigersonvaseline · 04/03/2022 22:08

I wish there was one for subs as well.

That Royal Canadian Air Force C-130 look like it is going into Prestwick…

ADS-B exchange is also showing another one at Prestwick on the ground.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 04/03/2022 22:13

Yes, I thought it looked to be heading home too. We've had a lot of training exercises over NCL as well as over the North Sea lately. In fact, during the whole of the Pandemic. I've been told by military folk that our airport was good for abort style landing exercises.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 04/03/2022 22:14

The Royal Canadian Hercules flew out over us this morning (East Mids) I watched him for a while track over to the continent before being distracted by a pair of B52’s coming in through Belgium to Neuremberg

Looks like the Hercules is going back to the Scottish base he left this morning

I spend far too much time watching these planes as I’m still laid out with disc problems and can’t do housework Grin

RainbowZebraWarrior · 04/03/2022 22:20

Another interesting loop. I thought at first it was one of those Aurora Borealis trips.

The airframe just getting back into Prestwick, #130614, looks to have done Prestwick/Zagreb/Poland then back to Prestwick just now.

Not sure what their other c-130 got up to, looks like it has shut down for the night so can’t replay it’s history.

Roman Abramovich's Jet LX-RAY Took off near Ankara, Ankara Province, TR, 50 minutes ago and has just landed in Istanbul again!

BabbleBee · 05/03/2022 10:00

21,000 people watching this one… RSD088 St Petersburg - Washington

Slingsanderrors · 05/03/2022 10:26

@notimagain it’s just flown overhead (Lincolnshire) en route from Prestwick to Zagreb.

Love this thread.
