So we've got Dudley today and tomorrow and Eunice on Friday so thought I'd start a thread. Dudley has barely hit here in Edinburgh and already there's a flight from LHR struggling to land.
@notimagain DH's plane I think due to land shortly after 7 am. ( Heathrow) I hope it will be OK & I suppose this is why pilots do all their training and we can trust them & they know what to do. I once flew into Johannesburg with a chap who had been a Tornado Pilot & he said ( re weather ) The only thing pilots don't like is Cumulo Nimbus clouds & they can pick that up on the radar - Whether he was saying that to comfort me or not - I do not know.
At the moment (well half an a hour ago) the wind at Heathrow hasn’t really started to pick up -it’s a steady southerly breeze ATM so maybe the forecast is slightly adrift on timing and it’ll be ok at 0700 ish.

And yes, lots of very nasty weather in and around Cumulo nimbus clouds so best avoided, and they are the main reason aircraft have weather radar.

Sorry to chip in but I'm finding it weird that I've found this thread because I just woke up from a nightmare about flying in the storm.

As you were

Motnight · 18/02/2022 05:48

Dd's plane from Luton to Glasgow still down as happening.

She got what seems to be the last train to Luton Airport. It arrived 30 mins late. Everything since then cancelled.

Interested in this thread?

I'm tempted but have a fear of flying. Not to the extent I don't go away but make a show of myself in every flight so not sure aborted landings are gonna be the best thing for me haha

Fuuuuuckit · 18/02/2022 06:09

@GreenWords

I live very close to leeds Bradford airport. It’s windy and there is a Tenerife flight trying to land
LBA is my local, even in good, still weather you hit the tarmac HARD whenever you land. Isnt it because the runway has a bit of a hump in it?

There are some terrifying YouTube clips of windy landings at LBA Shock

@notimagain - Thank you that sounds reassuring. I suspect I am worrying about this more than DH. But then ( whilst I am good at some things ) aerodymamics and flying is not my strong suit. I still find it hard to believe something so heavy can stay airborne ( and I have seen the diagrams which prove it Grin )

DH said his worst experience was flying into , I think it was Finland and a plane had not got off the runway & his plane having got down to landing height did a big sharp upturn which he said originally was a bit scary but the pilot came on and said - sorry - plane on runway we'll just go round and try again. Pilot sounded so calm DH smiled.

DH's plane has been in the air for many hours now so I assume they have a plan contingent on the weather.

Thatbplan will involves lots of extra fuel, just in case, though ATM the early morning Long Haul arrivals have been landing OK and I’ve just had a look at Flight radar and it looks like some short haul departures are getting away…

We’re just at the start of the period when the wind should pick up but a few minutes ago it was still 20 mph from the south, a stiff crosswind but not bad, hopefully it will still be OK for a while.

FurryGrowler · 18/02/2022 06:53

Morning all.

I have the most horrendous cold so am
going to be spending my morning in bed avidly watching flight radar..

Quick question, is paying for an upgrade on the app worth it ?

Hiyawotcha · 18/02/2022 07:18

I’d also love to know about whether the upgrade is worth it

MagicMatilda · 18/02/2022 07:21

DOD - LGW just attempted landing now circling

Only ever used the basic version so can’t help with that.

FWIW BAs Toronto just landed ok at LHR..wonder if that was the one somebody was asking about a day or two back?

Pennox · 18/02/2022 07:27

Bordeaux Gatwick! Poor people on that plane

pastaislife · 18/02/2022 07:31

JNB-LHR just doing a go around

liveforsummer · 18/02/2022 07:31

I assumed the upgrade would just get rid of the ads, which can be annoying but not enough to pay for their absence 😆

Yep, reported wind is picking up as forecast so it might be beginning to get interestingl
liveforsummer · 18/02/2022 07:35

@notimagain oh yes I remember someone asking about that, certain it was around 6am landing tone so assume it's the same flight. Glad the posters family have made it.

How's the storm with everyone. I'm in Scotland and was expecting to wake up to a bit of wind and also has 100% chance of heavy snow forecast however it's very still and very miserable, grey and wet. No breeze and definitely no snow. We didn't end up with more than a breeze from Dudley either.

OP posts:
BasiliskStare · 18/02/2022 07:40

@notimagain - please don't say "interesting" before DH has landed Grin - you do sound very knowledgable about all of this. - Right off to check on his plane

liveforsummer · 18/02/2022 07:43

@BasiliskStare the last to host popped down no issue at all I believe from pp on here that the wind direction is favourable for a LHR landing, the cries winds are the biggest problem I think

OP posts:
liveforsummer · 18/02/2022 07:43

That was meant to say the last two have and CROSS winds. I should really proof read 😆

Pennox · 18/02/2022 07:44

Is Bordeaux Gatwick easyJet going back to France after 2 failed attempts? Is that all they get?

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 18/02/2022 07:47

Ahem,

live from heathrow from 9am.

You're all welcome.

Munga · 18/02/2022 07:48

Anyone know how Manchester is doing?
Dub to Man going around again
VRA to MAN came down and back up and is now heading west

It’s not actually that favourable at LHR it’s a bit across (out of the south west) but it has been acceptable so far because the total wind speed hasn’t been to high….as the total speed builds up later the crosswind component builds as well.
