So we've got Dudley today and tomorrow and Eunice on Friday so thought I'd start a thread. Dudley has barely hit here in Edinburgh and already there's a flight from LHR struggling to land.

What do you think the chances of my pre-8am flight taking off from Heathrow are?

Jet2021 · 17/02/2022 22:55

I'm at RAF Coningsby, so used to lots of noise! There was lots of activity earlier this evening but all quiet now.

liveforsummer · 17/02/2022 23:09

@Sunwillcomeout

This all sounds interesting and I kinda want o join in, but when I look at the website there are literally thousands of little yellow planes everywhere, moving about a millimetre ever few seconds. How are you managing to watch planes land and stuff??
Zoom in, click on the individual planes

Zoom in on one near an airport and click on it and watch the altitude and speed.
Love that I’ve found a geek thread here!

liveforsummer · 17/02/2022 23:15

Also once you click on it you'll see it's path so you know if it's just arrived to land or if it's circled round 20 times and attempted to land

I have found my people!!! I'm under a Gatwick flight path and it has been getting increasingly busy in the evenings. Bit v quite tonight. I'm off to check the radar...

WestEndGirl222 · 17/02/2022 23:22

What do the blue planes mean?

liveforsummer · 17/02/2022 23:24

@WestEndGirl222

What do the blue planes mean?
They are satellite tracked rather than radar. Not sure why some are though. Maybe someone else knows?!

What do the blue planes mean?
I think they say on the details they're being tracked by satellite - they mostly seem to be mid-ocean I think.
WestEndGirl222 · 17/02/2022 23:35

Ok I see, thank you! :)

Vapeyvapevape · 17/02/2022 23:48

This is fascinating! I watched one plane go right past its destination (STN) and was worried it had been hijacked , huge relief when it circled round and landed . I love this sort of thing.

AnyName1 · 18/02/2022 00:20

AAAAAAA is having quite the trip.

Allegedly now travelling between Lebanon and Pohang so there's a flight path to South Korea plotted. Somehow I think it's not going to follow that.Grin
Thesearmsofmine · 18/02/2022 00:28

I’m watching the same plane…

It's usually to do with the direction of the runway. They often can't go directly into the airport from the direction of their origin.

Is it just me or has it completely disappeared into thin air somewhere around Ukraine?
FavouritePi · 18/02/2022 00:52

Why would it say invalid transponder code?

ErrolTheDragon · 18/02/2022 01:07

It's still there, now named SWIFT22

BasiliskStare · 18/02/2022 03:42

I'm watching DH's flight at the moment.

I do remember once when DS was flying back from Japan seeing the little plane disappear. DH was just leaving for work & I said DS's plane has disappeared in a sort of panicky way & he laconically said - Has it occurred to you that north of Russia and towards the Arctic circle they may not have the things which can ping off the aircraft. Of course it hadn't occurred to me and little plane appeared back on Flight radar in short order Blush

paradyning · 18/02/2022 04:54

SWIFT22 is the same drone I think

paradyning · 18/02/2022 05:03

Homer51 is a reconnaissance plane. Been looping around the Black Sea for a while

notimagain · 18/02/2022 05:10

Yawn…early start so dipping in …

Aircraft overland are tracked by receivers on the ground (mostly set by amateurs in Flight radars case) and are coloured yellow.

Out over the ocean these days many aircraft (but not all) are sending data to air traffic control by satellite…Flight radar uses that and those aircraft are coloured blue.

notimagain · 18/02/2022 05:14

@rooinspace

What do you think the chances of my pre-8am flight taking off from Heathrow are?
Ummm…

The very Early arrivals are now landing OK …wind start to build significantly from 0700 onwards to problematic levels…

BasiliskStare · 18/02/2022 05:22

@notimagain DH's plane I think due to land shortly after 7 am. ( Heathrow) I hope it will be OK & I suppose this is why pilots do all their training and we can trust them & they know what to do. I once flew into Johannesburg with a chap who had been a Tornado Pilot & he said ( re weather ) The only thing pilots don't like is Cumulo Nimbus clouds & they can pick that up on the radar - Whether he was saying that to comfort me or not - I do not know.

FleeceNavidadFromTheSheep · 18/02/2022 05:28

Morning all. Just woken up to a red weather warning for London and the South East, so more airports will be disrupted.
