So we've got Dudley today and tomorrow and Eunice on Friday so thought I'd start a thread. Dudley has barely hit here in Edinburgh and already there's a flight from LHR struggling to land.

I'm watching a US Air Force one make it second attempt to land in my local airport Shannon, Ireland.

BasiliskStare · 16/02/2022 18:21

@liveforsummer - will this affect inbound from US flight overnight Thursday

I know you can't say - I have been on so many Flightradar things for DH and DS over the years - need to get back on it

Its landed now.
I just copped that you can check the most watch planes by clicking the horizontal line under the search bar in the app, I never knew about that!

Thanks for that. That’s quite good although a bit alarming that the current ones are all Ukraine.

@Snowpatrolling

Just watching the lanzarote Birmingham her 2 flight, it noped on the landing!!
Brum is a bit of a UK oddity, it is one of relatively few airports which has a runway aligned north north west-south south east which means when you get the UK standard strong westerlies it's all crosswind on that runway and so can quickly go outside limits.
FAQs · 16/02/2022 18:32

The Guernsey to Birmingham landing soon must be bouncy! I don’t like those planes always terrify me.

@FriendlyLaundryMonster

How can you tell which flights are being turned away or sent to other airports? DS is due to fly home on a 4pm flight from SOU on Friday and the forecast for wind at that time is not good :( Don't know what else to do, other than tell him to go to the airport and hope.
Doesn't look great but the actual detailed forecast for the airport for Friday P.M. won't get promulgated until about this time tomorrow, maybe a bit later...

Fingers crossed..

Flight radar you can watch the planes attempt to land. It shows you exactly where they are and the alto did so you can see when they start going up again and when they head off elsewhere. Things change so quickly though with the weather thoug it's impossible to predict you can only see how it is minute but minute live even then some planes manage and some don't. Depends on the gusts at the exact moments.

Theres a malaga flight due into Glasgow in 16 minutes. Im watching to see how it goes

I didn't think they'd have the flights coming in a amber warning.

Inbound to where? Thursday looks safeish for now bit bit early to say.

On it! Seems to happen a lot. I'm surprised too bit they never seem to cancel on the grounds of weather conditions in the destination airport.

A Logan air just about to fly over my house on approach to Manchester. It’s blowing a hooly so will be interested to see how they get on.

Stevie6 · 16/02/2022 18:47

@TomAllenWife

When is Eunice coming? We have a brs-tfs flight on Friday
All of south west on Amber for Friday, Bristol is on the "at risk" list
FriendlyLaundryMonster · 16/02/2022 18:48

so sorry, but whereabouts on Flightradar do I go to see flights land? Do I need a subscription? I love data like this! I'm surprised I don't already know about this :)

TheBayside · 16/02/2022 18:49

Omg - I’ve never looked at this before. Am I right in thinking the Glasgow flight didn’t land?

TheBayside · 16/02/2022 18:50

Oh no scrap that! Looks like it did

It's a tricky call .. forecasts are rightly on the pessimistic side, and even with high winds forecast there's a chance of landing between gusts...as a result there's a tendency to either delay cancelations as late as possible to see what sort of weather actually arrives, or go anyway but carry extra buffer fuel and be prepared to divert.

Last report for Manchester at 1820 hours was 28 knots gusting 39 knots but more importantly out of the west..

So a decent crosswind but mostly a headwind.... but it would be rough as XXXX.......

BasiliskStare · 16/02/2022 19:01

@liveforsummer NY to Heathrow

I did once track my son from Singapore to UK on FLightradar - the plane disappeared & I shouted to DH Oh Oh no plane - what's happened - to which he laconically answered - the route is over northern russia - has it occurred to you they don't have the satellite / whatever things to track DS's plane . He went out to work and sure enough DS's plane reappeared.

You just find your plane and click on it and you can follow the entire journey, where it's been including when it circles in a holding pattern etc. It appears on the tarmac shortly before take off and disappears again shortly after landing. Shows speed and altitude so you know when it's slowing/descending etc. No subscription needed but there are some adverts if you don't have one
