So we've got Dudley today and tomorrow and Eunice on Friday so thought I'd start a thread. Dudley has barely hit here in Edinburgh and already there's a flight from LHR struggling to land.

Oh I can't find that. That would be annoying- plenty on the ground at Gatwick and in holding so can't be that bad. They must have plenty fuel for a Luger couple of goes and then a divert to stansted or something if they can head all the way back to France

Just looking again- there are so many planes ! I really had no idea it was so busy up there . How does it work with the air traffic controllers? Are there lots of them at each airport or is just one responsible for all the flights?

Crazykatie · 18/02/2022 07:50

Birmingham is going to be difficult they are 100% cross wind

A pair of US Air Force bombers are heading out west (on the most watched list)

Looks like Bordeaux to Gatwick is coming back. Should pass close to us in Normandy soon.

liveforsummer · 18/02/2022 07:51

@Vapeyvapevape it's so busy isn't it, I was surprised the international flights just passing over were going straight over London airspace instead of taking a quieter route, it's hard to keep track of them all. No idea how it works for WTC there must be loads of them surely

@Pennox

Is Bordeaux Gatwick easyJet going back to France after 2 failed attempts? Is that all they get?
I can’t speak for Easyjet but I know many companies have a rule that you can have two goes at an approach if fuel allows then you must divert…unless it is obvious that the weather has suddenly improved and you will get in on the third go and there are always “Force Majeur” exceptions.

That rule is done mainly to reduce stress levels…

Pennox · 18/02/2022 07:55

Is that because after a third failed attempt they wouldn’t have enough file for what a 4th attempt!

rooinspace · 18/02/2022 07:56

My LHR shorthaul flight took off - bumpy but we’re up! (Onboard WiFi)

Best of luck to those still waiting

This picture makes me so anxious Grin

Air space is divided into blocks (and it’s divided both horizontally and vertically) or sectors, so the work is spilt across multiple controllers

For example at Heathrow very roughly speaking you’d have a controller handling flight at the holds, another one handles the bit from off the hold until about 5 miles or so off the runway then another one (in the tower) to handle the final stages until you are off the runway, then another one (or two) for ground movement.

To avoid congestion they operate on different radio frequencies so the pilots are “switching channels” as they go through the flight, switching from one controller to the next etc.

FleeceNavidadFromTheSheep · 18/02/2022 07:59

The Bordeaux flight is showing as 'diverted' on the Gatwick arrivals board, intrigued to see where it will land.

That’s unlikely on a day like today when this weather was forecast..I’d bet flights were arriving with enough fuel to hold for maybe an hour..so if they went straight in for an approach, which many of the flight have done, or only held briefly, they will have have had plenty of excess gas.

The problem is more likely to be the two approach rule I mentioned earlier

There are a few Manchester bound flights that appear to be struggling/in holding patterns. I'm not that far away and it feels pretty calm here so far!

FleeceNavidadFromTheSheep · 18/02/2022 08:06

It's going back to Bordeaux. Oh dear.

I was just wondering about that, I’m very near the airport and its calm abs blue sky here

Can anyone remember what time the pp flying out of Bristol was departing? Looks like things are taking off and landing as normal atm so hopefully she gets to Tenerife

I waved to the Bordeaux flight as it went past about 5 minutes ago. Blustery here in Calvados, but nothing like you have.

They've got enough fuel to get back to Bordeaux so can't be that. You'd have thought they'd put it down somewhere else in the uk rather than go all the way back. I know as a passenger I'd rather at least be in the correct country

Going back to point of origin is often one of the better options TBH..gets at least some of the passengers in a position where if the flight doesn’t make a second attempt today they can simply walk back to the car park, drive home and try again whenever it’s replanned.
notimagain · 18/02/2022 08:14

@liveforsummer

See my previous answer and consider that fair few passengers might actually be French and Bordeaux might actually be home for them…

KenAdams · 18/02/2022 08:15

I've had the upgrade for years it's brilliant, well worth the money

TomAllenWife · 18/02/2022 08:16

@liveforsummer it's meeeeeee

Flights is at 2pm, just got to make it there over bridge!!!!!!
For now I'm getting ready as planned

ATrifleofFun · 18/02/2022 08:17

I have to say this thread is reminding me of a game called flight control, from the early days of the iPhone/ipad. You had to stack planes for landing and it was so addictive. Glad I'm not in air traffic control today.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 18/02/2022 08:18

I am at Malaga airport awaiting my flight to Luton. Fingers crossed we leave on time and land ok 🤞🏼🤞🏼 although if they cancel it and I get to stay here another day, that would also be good 😊
