So we've got Dudley today and tomorrow and Eunice on Friday so thought I'd start a thread. Dudley has barely hit here in Edinburgh and already there's a flight from LHR struggling to land.

If it’s Heathrow then TBF I think I have to point out the relatively recently issued airport forecast for tomorrow AM from 0300 onwards is very entertaining… Very very very strong crosswinds building up throughout the morning..Gatwick will be similar, possibly slightly worse because of it’s elevation.

The big planes used for transatlantic flights do seem to have an easier time landing than the smaller ones though so might still be ok. Seen some tremendous landing efforts at Heathrow with some of the biggies in some major storms. If it does happen though that they can't land there there's plenty other choice without having to divert too far

I was with you all last night, live right by SOU so heavily invested in that poor flight. Couldn't stop flicking between Ukraine flights and Manchester. It's fascinating and addictive.
I do remember the storms from last year and the guy who live streamed all the stuff from Heathrow (I think) - must find that again.
The Poseidon plane - just done a google - so that's owned by the us navy and is used for anti submarine stuff as well as other kind of monitoring and targeting reasons? So is it safe to assume that it circling as last night means it's got it's eye on something? In which case do they talk to the British navy????? I mean how does it work???

notimagain · 17/02/2022 08:34

Size shouldn’t matter TBH Hmm

Most commercial stuff has similar limits these days, but the biggies possibly look impressive…

Looking at tomorrow if that forecast holds it looks like lots of disruption at LHR/LGW in the AM, I would not be surprised to see shorthaul cancellations being announced later…The Longhaul stuff that leave London today will I guess have a go anyway, but I’d be expecting diversions.

@ErrolTheDragon

I just found Lublin to Dublin. Best flight name ever?Grin
Have you ever listened to the radio show “Cabin Pressure”?! It’s a comedy about a small airline and one regular thing the pilots do is play games to stave off boredom. One game is rhyming departure/destinations and Lublin to Dublin is one they try and use.

Highly recommend it, the main cast is Stephanie Cole, Roger Allam, Benedict Cumberbatch and John Finnemore (who wrote it).

..Thanks, since we on the subject for those who really want to get into the geeky stuff..

This will give you the actual airport forecasts (the “TAF”) and the latest actual observed weather (the “METAR”) both in long hand English and in the abbreviated aviation users form.

@notimagain

Morning..just catching up..

The one doing holds in a fixed position off Ireland last night - could well have been a tanker…

At 29,500ft?Grin
Pennox · 17/02/2022 09:22

I fell asleep, what happened to it?

EllaB22 · 17/02/2022 09:44

Feel asleep too .. glad for the updates!

Sunnycats · 17/02/2022 09:50

@notimagain oops yes its Heathrow....I'm a newbie with all this, does that mean that it may be diverted? I've got to drive from Bristol area early in the morning so worrying about that too!

Sunnycats · 17/02/2022 09:53

Thank you, am feeling very anxious at the moment about it, so really hoping they go ok. I reckon I will be up all night tonight following their flight!

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 17/02/2022 10:29

Is the XCW wind forecast as/more accurate than the Met? There seems to be a bit of variation in them. Still trying to decide what to do about DS flying out of SOU at 4pm tomorrow. But, all other flights we could change him to are full.

TheLeigh · 17/02/2022 10:48

Errol " At 29,500ft?"

Yes, for refuelling. I don't know if this one was a tanker but they operate at altitude.

It's fascinating and addictive.

It is so addictive. I haven’t been so addicted to something online since I discovered Edinburgh Zoo’s penguin cam. www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/webcams/penguin-cam/

ifonly4 · 17/02/2022 11:10

Sunnycats looking at the wind forecast tomorrow around Heathrow, it's going to hit it's peak around noon, so hopefully it'll be ok.

lonelynotalone · 17/02/2022 11:13

Wow I am loving this thread! Im so addicted now and can't stop checking, especially what's going on around Ukraine. RAF plane heading towards Ukraine now in most watched list.

liveforsummer · 17/02/2022 11:50

@BabbleBee you may have found your answer - can lose hours once you get sucked into this rabbit hole 😆. Tomorrow should be interesting too with high winds forecast for much of England

The helecopters are from RAF Shawbury, it's a helecopter training base.
