I 100% recognise someone on here....

.... would you tell them? Old colleague, absolutely 100% is her, she has described her family very specifically in a recent thread. I have searched her posting history and other things she's posted mean it has to be her. What would you do? Not acknowledge? Say on here they best change username? Message them IRL and tell them? We speak about once a month and live in the same town.

Not acknowledge it. You sound like a stalker! I do often wonder if anyone from RL has spotted me, I’m not that secret over my postings.

Nolagerformethanks · 14/02/2022 19:29

I'm deffo not a stalker 😄 I only searched history to confirm what I thought, she's lovely I just didn't know what to do really? I'll ignore! Yes I suppose someone may have outed me as well 🤔

I’ve been spotted and spotted others. Sometimes I’ve said, sometimes I’ve not. But I have tried to name change more frequently since I’ve been spotted..

Thesearmsofmine · 14/02/2022 19:31

I recognised someone on here after they posted about something very specific that happened in their family. I didn’t say anything and haven’t looked them up.

ihatethecold · 14/02/2022 19:33

Jesus. Don’t say anything. Just be a confidential friend and never tell anyone anything she posts.

SEcretsand · 14/02/2022 19:33

Omg I would want to know if it's me. I tell way too much and am so paranoid tbh.

marqueses · 14/02/2022 19:33

It's not stalking to use the search facility on a website that is, you know, for searching posts, don't be so silly.

Ahve you namechanged for this thread @Nolagerformethanks? If so I'd message her to let her know that she might want to change her name as you've recognised her. She might mot mind but I'd appreciate someone telling me as I'd want a new name.

Nolagerformethanks · 14/02/2022 19:34

How did the person tell you that you had been spotted @Forshorttheycallmecomp?

OP posts:
Nolagerformethanks · 14/02/2022 19:38

I'm just using an old name, I haven't posted in a few years @marqueses just logged in for this post. I think I would rather know as well!

Kshhuxnxk · 14/02/2022 19:44

If they've posted something sensitive then no but if they haven't yes - tell them before they perhaps do.

Forshorttheycallmecomp · 14/02/2022 19:46

They messaged me.
I’ve messaged someone else.
I’ve been hanging out on internet message boards for 20 years or so now, some styles are familiar.

3WildOnes · 14/02/2022 19:48

I’ve recognised a few people on here. Never said anything. I wouldn’t want anyone to say anything if they recognised me.

Bluetrews25 · 14/02/2022 19:54

You know when you're in hospital and you can hear what the doctor is saying to the patient in the next cubicle?
You get selective deafness and say nothing.
Same here, surely?

scaredsadandstuck · 14/02/2022 19:55

Someone recognised me on here not long ago. Fortunately I'd NC'd for that particular post as I knew it was identifying. I was really hurt because she messaged our group chat to 'out' me. I just denied it to be honest as I thought it was quite a shitty thing to do. I would never do the same to someone.

We all post here on the basis that while what you say may be identifiable, it is an anonymous forum.

Rollonspring1111 · 14/02/2022 19:57

You can't know 100% though.
Unless they are giving away real names then it's impossible to know whether it is just coincidences.

DramaAlpaca · 14/02/2022 19:59

Ignore it. Pretend you know nothing. Don't tell her, you'll just make her worry who's worked it out because presumably you wouldn't tell her who you are.

user1471554720 · 14/02/2022 20:01

Message them on here, tell them you may recognise them. If you tell your friend IRL it will be awkward. However, a lot of people have similar issues, so it may not be your friend posting.

Loopytiles · 14/02/2022 20:02

Say nothing to anyone!

I wouldn't tell someone I'd recognised them from Mumsnet, it would be too weird.

I got noticed on another forum when I posted about a very specificand horrific Secret Santa gift I'd received. Someone I worked with texted me and said they'd seen my post about the gift. That wasn't a place with a name changing facility so I was very wary about posting anything personal after that.

felulageller · 14/02/2022 20:05

I wouldn't be surprised if someone recognised me on here. I don't name change as often as I used to.

I'm not really as bothered if anyone does recognise me as I dont post things I'm not happy to be made public.

I have irl friends who are on here and know I'm on here. I don't know their usernames and don't tell mine.

There's only one I've actually recognised here.

I dont specifically mention seeing her posts but we talk about the things she post about anyway.

If someone started a thread about me however, that would be tricky!!

OldTinHat · 14/02/2022 20:06

Jut say nothing. MN is supposed to be anonymous so if you spot someone, respect their privacy and don't acknowledge.

Temporaryrespite · 14/02/2022 20:06

Oh please don't say anything. I would be uncomfortable knowing that I had been recognised and if someone I know recognised me, I hope they would have the grace not to mention it.
Your friend is an adult op, she must know she has put identifying details out there, no need to feel obliged to tell her.

Bagelsandbrie · 14/02/2022 20:06

I wouldn’t say anything.

I’m quite identifiable from what I post but then I don’t post anything on here I wouldn’t want people seeing or knowing about me in real life so I don’t care. Most of my posts are about health stuff or dry vaginas related to lack of oestrogen Grin and I think we don’t talk about that enough so I’ll readily admit it’s me and talk about it some more…. either that or I’m waffling on about moving to Norfolk from London or some other boring shit. I’m too boring for people to care about really. Grin

SilkySusan · 14/02/2022 20:07

I recognised someone as they had posted the same story on Facebook. I added to the thread that I was a Facebook friend and that they should change their username as they had been outed. They wouldn't have known who I was on here as I change my own username very frequently and, if I'm telling a distinct story, sometimes switch a few details up.
