What would a non binary teacher be addressed as?

dd’s school expects all teachers to be addressed as ‘sir’ or ‘miss’. She’s just asked me what a non binary teacher would be called. Any ideas?

It’s very true! Grin

StarMouse879 Thanks for this. A good starting point. I would suspect the vast majority of people have felt like this at some point in their lives, without giving themselves a label for it. Although obviously for many NB people, the description is often a gateway point into gender transition, and sometimes detransition. So potentially a useful tool ascertaining someone's state of mind.

Rheopecticfluid · 06/02/2022 11:13

But it still remains consistent that there's no actual explanation of what the identity is , what it involves and how it differes from anything anyone else thinks or feels or does but who doesn't have a gender identity.

Yes it seems to be a catchall for many many things. But in numbers that clearly give people a group to belong to / fit in with, with the more unpleasant ones of that group demanding rights that they really should not have. (Note I said some, not all, for those hard of reading)

The expansion of all these terms to the point where it can all amd the words can all mean anything and everything surely erases the very thing they are trying to describe?

If each person has to have some internal glossary as to what it means fir them as uts entirely personal and no two people feel the same then it's basically all pointing back to 2 sexs and a personality isn't it?

Rheopecticfluid · 06/02/2022 11:23

I used to be a goth when I was younger. Keys points needed to for this:

A sense of superiority over people not goth. (Note this was to mask my over all sense on inferiority and difficulties fitting in)

A space to look more different and more exciting than boring old normal people.

A belief that our conversation and understanding was way deeper and more insightful than mere ordinary humans.

An absolute crippling social anxiety. Being with other goths provided protection from that because we all had our issues, one way or another.

Most importantly, goths were all sorts of people from all sorts of backgrounds. Some just like the music, for some, it was their life, their whole identity, social anxiety, mental health of varying extremes, autism, it just gave us all a place to fit in, with other people who also struggled and needed a place to hang out. And for some, they had far more serious problems, whilst residing under the goth descriptor.

I don't think NB is much different to that.

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/02/2022 11:23

I also struggle to understand why this lable is seen as a positive and people can bow just get on with their lives problem solved.

If , instead of going - we have noticed u struggle to make and maintain relationships with your peers, struggle I'm social situations etc instead of saying it might be worth assessing your fir autism or depression or whatever where they can actually then start to access help, have employers make adaptations etc.

Its all " your non binary here's a binder/tu tu off you go"

That's the opposite if helpful

Ceramide · 06/02/2022 11:29

it is perfectly normal to use a person's preferred pronouns and titles in all walks of life.

This is obviously untrue. Pronouns should be objectively descriptive, not self-defined.

Ceramide · 06/02/2022 11:33

There is - and has always been - a deep sense of being out of place among people of their biological sex. Like they are wired differently

Why should they feel they must exclude themselves from the biological truth of their own body?

They are just as much a real girl or boy as those who happen to fit the majority behaviour or societal stereotypes.

Rheopecticfluid · 06/02/2022 11:36

Yes one label for potentially a multitude of conditions / experiences is very unhelpful. Although the people themselves have given them themselves this label. It's not as if medical professionals (where needed obvs) shouldn't prob more deeply into this. After all, I was never diagnosed with being a goth, here's your tattoo and black hair dye, off you go. I may well have been diagnosed with extreme social anxiety though.

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/02/2022 11:37

This is obviously untrue. Pronouns should be objectively descriptive, not self-defined

And not when it has the potential to disguise situations .

" miss, Alex is in the showers and I need to get changed for pe, can you ask her to leave please "

As opposed to " miss Alex is in the shower can u ask.him to leave as the girls need to get changed "

One sentence explains that a male is in the wrong space and he should be dealt with fir with the severity it deserves.

One turns the por girls asking to use their own space for it'd intended purpose Into nasty little bullies ganging up on some.poor girl taking a shower.

Why should kids take that hit for asking fir what they re legally entitled to.

Just no

Rheopecticfluid · 06/02/2022 11:40

It all brings to mind the episode of South park: 'goth kids 3: dawn of the posers.'

They were always weirdly insightful.

Rheopecticfluid · 06/02/2022 11:41

Whatwouldscullydo agreed.

SweetPotatoDumpling · 06/02/2022 11:50

I'm a 'Miss Dumpling' but no matter where I go, I get Mrs Dumpling 🤷‍♀️ I do try to insist that 'there is no Mr Dumpling, I'm a Miss' but it doesn't stick seem to 🤣

I suspect it's because I'm a dinosaur 🦖 so if I wanted to go down the change of pronoun route, maybe I'll try Trex Dumpling (without the hyphen for simplicity?)
