Just heard this on the BBC. So young

As with many others, background to my youth & relationships, good times...

I lived his concerts, for ME, the best 'showman'. Loved him.

Very very sad at the news 😢.

I feel a tribute weekend coming up!! 🥃

IntermittentParps · 21/01/2022 10:55

@ThreeKneeRepeater

I have a memory of him on a chat show getting very annoyed at people who wrote his name as Meatloaf. He emphasised over and over that it was two words. Meat Loaf. RIP.
I'm a pedant an editorial professional and, of all the things I loved him for, I loved him for this the most. Grin

RIP Meat Loaf
That's Meat Loaf

Celia66 · 21/01/2022 10:56

Tigger1001 thank you, I didn't know he recorded it. A pleasure still to come, I'll enjoy listening to it.

Norgie · 21/01/2022 10:59

Now we will never know what he won't do for love.

jamdonut · 21/01/2022 11:02

“Sooner or later you’ll be screwing around”
“No, I won’t do that!”

I believe is the answer.

Aposterhasnoname · 21/01/2022 11:09

Did anyone find out what that thing he wouldn't do for love was?

Always baffled when people ask this. It’s right there all the way through the song. And particularly at the end. But then I am a meatloaf nerd who knows all the words to all his songs, so maybe it’s me.

“After a while you forget everything, it was brief interlude and a midsummers night fling and you’ll see that it’s time to move on”

“I won’t do that.”

“I know the territory I’ve been around, it’ll all turn to dust and will all fall down. And sooner or later you’ll be screwing around”

“I won’t do that”

MintyGreenDream · 21/01/2022 11:12

bit crass @Norgie

Frymetothemoon · 21/01/2022 11:30

@Norgie

It (or actually they) are in the song - someone has picked them out earlier in the thread
ReggaetonLente · 21/01/2022 11:32

My dad absolutely loved him. I have fond memories of being driven down country roads as a kid listening to Bat Out Of Hell.

My dad died a few years ago in his 50s, kind of brings back the sadness a little to hear this.

TheGoldenWolfFleece · 21/01/2022 11:53

Terribly sad but not unexpected, he's been in poor health for years and years. I think he almost died a few years ago too.

Rest in peace Meat. Thanks for the music and the memories.

Quackpot · 21/01/2022 12:01

I've cried. Currently listening to all his songs. Huge huge loss.

Aposterhasnoname · 21/01/2022 12:03

@Everydaydayisaschoolday

Its so sad but he had been very ill and frail for a while.

If you get a chance go and see Bat out of Hell - the Musical . It's currently touring the U.K. and it's brilliant. I was at a performance yesterday and am going again tomorrow (and next week and the week after that etc). Tomorrows performance will be very emotional.

Thanks for this. Never knew it was a thing. Just booked to see it.

I suspect I will also be having a wee tribute weekend to him.

Some great memories of his concerts.

'that' of course, crikey I feel silly. BlushThanks to poster who enlightened us.

MrsGinnyM · 21/01/2022 13:08

One of my DCs has claimed all my old vinyl LPs, so BOOH will be taken back and put on full blast tonight. RIP Michael. Thanks for the memories.

MrsGinnyM · 21/01/2022 13:28

@2X4B523P

RIP Marvin
He changed his name legally to Michael. He hated Marvin as it reminded him of being bullied at school.
MrsGinnyM · 21/01/2022 14:16

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo

Doubly sad when you recall that Jim. Steinman who wrote many of the Meatloaf classics died last year too
When Jim died last April, Meat Loaf wrote: "Coming here soon, my brother Jimmy."

As others have said, he insisted first name Meat, second name Loaf, never Meatloaf.

MatildaJayne · 21/01/2022 15:20

Gutted. Can't believe it's been over 40 years that I've been a fan.

My dad died aged 74 - I felt robbed, it was too soon.

E.g.

But I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way tonight
And I would do anything for love, Oh, I would do anything for love
Oh, I would do anything for love, but I won't ....[forgive myself if I don't get a shag tonight.]

I'm not saying it makes a lot of sense....

AmadeustheAlpaca · 22/01/2022 00:26

BooH was the soundtrack to my student life and I still love listening to it 40 years on. Music just now sounds so bland and anaemic in comparison, so much good stuff in the 70s. RIP Meaty, total legend.

mjf981 · 22/01/2022 05:27

I'm sad. I would do anything for love is the song that doesn't end, and you don't want it to. Thanks for sharing your talents with the world. RIP you legend.

mjf981 · 22/01/2022 05:30

I'm listening to Two Out of Three Ain't Bad now Sad

TheWomandestroyed · 22/01/2022 05:52

@User48751490

74 so young in today's terms.
Yes, I can't understand posters who are saying it's hardly young! It is young nowadays. I work with older people and that reinforces my idea of that.
Flidina · 22/01/2022 07:42

Bat Out of Hell was the soundtrack of my youth, DH introduced me to it over 40 years ago when we first met, and we've listened to it constantly over the years, through good times and bad. It feels like an end of an era, very emotional, RIP Meatloaf.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/01/2022 10:06

just watched the program that was on bbc4 last night, thanks for whoever recommended it - a good watch
