Just come downstairs to make a cuppa as baby DD has only just gone to sleep and it's so cold. Heating is set to 18 at night, and it's not come ok but it's soo chilly. We have a modern house but loads of windows 🥶

Thermostat is at 16.5c from 10pm to 7am but usually it doesn't get that low and rarely kicks in.

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2022 22:36

@toldgoodDog the thought of an electric blanket-I would hate that. Love a cold bed to get into, and the room to be quite cold while sleeping. Luckily DH is the same. Grin

Off at night and on at 7 at 20c and off if house is empty during the day …the dog is ok with that ! Dog lying under the duvet, now the heating off !

@Redglitter

Heating is off at night & bedroom window open
Same here.

And I still have a 4 tog duvet! (Bit menopausal. Although I’ve always have no heating on and the windows open)

RedHot22 · 14/01/2022 22:36

Always off at night

DockOTheBay · 14/01/2022 22:37

Ours is off overnight but it never gets colder than about 17 degrees. Comes on at 5.30am at this time of year so it's warm by the time we get up.
We are a mid terrace house which is pretty well insulated.

MrsTrumpton · 14/01/2022 22:40

Never have it on at night. Goes off at 10.30 and back on at 7. Can't bear the stuffy headache I get if it's accidentally left on – a relative keeps theirs at 21 and I hate sleeping in their house.

emsmar · 14/01/2022 22:40

Ours is off at night and our bedroom window open. My DP is like a big hot water bottle. Don't even need to touch him or anything, he just emits heat. Shite in the summer!

Divebar2021 · 14/01/2022 22:40

We don’t have our heating on at night. Our DD sleeps in a north facing room which gets cold. When she was a baby we invested in an electric portable radiator for her room.

Tumbleweed101 · 14/01/2022 22:43

Thermostat is at 15C at night so Will only come on ìf lower.

Tumbleweed101 · 14/01/2022 22:45

We have early mornings so needs to be warm enough to get up to.

morris92 · 14/01/2022 22:45

Ours is on 21 constantly, our thermostat is wireless and we leave it on the landing upstairs. Our downstairs is always warm but upstairs is freezing.

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/01/2022 22:48

Oh wow, can’t believe how cold some of your houses are. I have mine at 21.5 during the night and defo can’t do lower as I keep trying then realising why I can’t do it - it’s too bloody cold!

AnonAnom940 · 14/01/2022 22:52

Heating is on at 20° all night. My toddler's room gets cold and she gets chilly quickly despite a thick sleeping bag and layers. Her hands and face get cold. She wakes up and takes ages to get back to sleep

Pre baby, the heating would be off all night. I really dislike it atm, it's too hot!

Diversion · 14/01/2022 22:55

We haven't used the heating much over winter but have lit both of the stoves just to warm downstairs and have the doors open so it warms the rest of the house. We let them go out before we go to bed. I still have the fan on in my bedroom at night though due to menopause hot flushes.

AllLopsided · 14/01/2022 23:00

It's set to 16 at night. We have an old house and if we let it cool down more than that it would never warm up again! Outside temp is often -10 to -15 at night in winter though. It's certainly normal here (near the Alps) to leave heating on all the time at a lower temp rather than turn it on and off.

MarshmallowFondant · 14/01/2022 23:03

13 overnight. Never gets cold enough to come on.. 1960s house but well insulated

BornOnTwelfthNight · 14/01/2022 23:16

Heating goes off anywhere between 9 and 10. Hate the heating on at night it gets too hot and stuffy, I can’t breathe properly when trying to sleep. I’ll always wake up with a headache if it’s been left on.
(I have also been having nightly hot flushes for the past month, so it’s bad enough trying to sleep as it is!)

Don’t usually put heating on immediately in the morning either as I’m still too hot from overnight. I will put it on about 10am to take the chill off, usually when the living room temperature is reading below 15.

Socialcarenope · 14/01/2022 23:17

We have ours on "frost protect" at night, which I think means it kicks in at 5 degrees.

I hate the heating on at night, I sleep terribly and wake with dry eyes. For that reason I refuse to stay at mums, who has the heating on at 20 round the clock.

Smileatthesmallthings · 14/01/2022 23:24

18.5 and the thermostat is moved to DS's room at night because it's by far the coldest in the house and he was a bugger for kicking off any and all blankets and waking up freezing. He's started sleeping much better recently and actually pulls his 10.5 tog duvet over him now instead of yelling me for snuggles at 3am so we may be able to lower it, but he definitely feels the cold at night. I really feel the cold so live in blankets and my dressing gown.

Perfectlystill · 14/01/2022 23:28

We don't have our heating on at night

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 14/01/2022 23:35

@bizzey

Am I being thick here ? Do people leave their heating on all day ..but it clicks on at a certain temperature ? I still don't understand why?
Yes, because it's not actually on as such! Mine is set to different temps at different times so overnight it is 5c (frost protect) so although it's "on" it's not actually on During the day it will switch itself on if it drops below 17c Like the kettle is switched on at the wall but it's not on and boiling water
Fittleswade · 14/01/2022 23:43

16 at night

Kite22 · 14/01/2022 23:56

Our thermostat is set at 18.5C 24/7. It’s interesting to read all the views here. I think if it wasn’t for the kids and my worry they kick their covers off I would have it bit lower at night. Imagine the saving!

If they wake up, having kicked their quilt off, they then pull the quilt back on and sleep again.

Oh wow, can’t believe how cold some of your houses are. I have mine at 21.5 during the night and defo can’t do lower as I keep trying then realising why I can’t do it - it’s too bloody cold!

Why not get thicker quilts, or a blanket to put on top of the quilt ? I mean, most people would find that temperature stuffy and overwhelming when in bed.

Am I being thick here ?
Do people leave their heating on all day ..but it clicks on at a certain temperature ?
I still don't understand why?

Yes, most relatively modern boilers allow you to set different temperatures for different times of day. So if there is a sudden cold snap then the heating will come on in the afternoon rather than waiting until evening say. Or at night if it drops below about 5 - 7 degrees and there is a risk of pipes freezing as well as people feeling cold. Normally, under your quilt you don't need heating on (say between 11pm and 3/4 hour before your alarm goes off, but if it dropped to freezing, it is nice to just slightly take the chill off. As pp says, it isn't costing anything normally, because it isn't actually "on" (as in warming up the radiators) unless it needs to be. So - for another example - when you get to Easter and weather can be really mixed, the heating will come on only one the days when it is cold, but not on the warmer days, because it only kicks in if it drops to below the temperature that you set it for.

SockFluffInTheBath · 14/01/2022 23:58

Off at night so anywhere down to the frost stat temperature- it never kicks in though, I don’t imagine the house gets much below 15 deg.
