Just come downstairs to make a cuppa as baby DD has only just gone to sleep and it's so cold. Heating is set to 18 at night, and it's not come ok but it's soo chilly. We have a modern house but loads of windows 🥶

I keep the house about 12 degrees whilst sleeping, I have a nice thick winter duvet to keep me warm. In the day (when we get up or come home from work/school) it's about 20.

WutheringHeights66 · 18/01/2022 06:49

It’s off at night, would come on if it fell below 5 but it’s never been that cold in the house before. We have an awesome goose down duvet though and with two cats snuggled in there too it’s never cold at night.

19 at night

Heating is never on at night here, goes off at 10 and comes back on at 6.30am. Expensive enough to have it on in the day, no need for it at night when we are in bed under duvets.

misskatamari · 18/01/2022 07:03

Off at night and we have our window open a bit too. Still cosy and warm as our duvet is nice and thick

Angel2702 · 18/01/2022 07:04

Although for the first 9 years we lived together we had no central heating only an old gas fire in the living room, only got central heating 10 years ago so are used to not heating anywhere at night.

Quamora · 18/01/2022 07:06

Ours has two zones so downstairs is on for 1.5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening and upstairs is on for 1.5 hours in the evening.

I’d have it on a bit more if it was up to me and sometimes sneakily advance it.

Before I lived with do I had it on constant but controlled by the thermostat (so 19 in the day and 12 at night) and in that house it was cheaper to do so and stopped condensation on windows etc but he refuses to believe this could ever be cheaper!

crochetmylifeaway · 18/01/2022 07:06

Mine turns off at half 10 and comes back on at half 5. It was set to half 6 but my youngest kept waking up at around 6 complaining of being cold so I set it an hour earlier and that solved the problem.

MakkaPakkas · 18/01/2022 07:13

I have ours at 16 overnight. In the old days it would have been turned off. I think when you've got a baby and you're up and down at odd hours it's nice to have it on.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 18/01/2022 07:15

No heating at night, turn it turn to 15 and it rarely kicks in, although it did the other night. I like a window open in the bedroom all year round … and love getting into a nice cold bed. Couldn’t bare electric blankets or the like Shock.

I wfh and it’s usually on 18/19.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 18/01/2022 07:15

BashfulClam · 18/01/2022 07:18

I have it set to come on when house reaches 16c.

This thread has been an eye opener. I'm quite stingy with our heating and it still costs £350 a month. I'd say it's not on for more than 3 hours a day, never overnight and it rarely gets to 18 in the day.

We have just installed a Hive hearing system so I can see the various temperatures. The heating's been on for an hour and it's now around 11 degrees which feels ok (although I tend to wear a thin puffer type coat).

newyear1 · 18/01/2022 07:32

Aargh puffa not puffer..!

Do you have a large house with poor insulation and an inefficient heating system? Because it doesn't cost anywhere near £350 a month to heat, or even for all utilities, for an average house, even if the heating is on 'properly'.

We currently pay around £100 pm, although I'm expecting it to go up to around £150 and we have it set at 21 for about 6 hours a day in the mornings and evenings, plus a few daytime boosts and longer at the weekend. The heating goes off at night but rarely drops below 17 C. This is for a 2 bed semi with a large ground floor extension.

Shock how!?!?! Are you all electric heating or something?
newyear1 · 18/01/2022 08:02

No we have gas heating. It's quite a large 1930s house although it's pretty well insulated. I'm also a stickler for turning off lights etc.

The kitchen is quite cold as it has a vaulted ceiling which I presume isn't great for heat loss. I also try to find cheap energy providers.

Blimey. I live in a largish, old (1800's), detached house. Even with the heating on 24/7, my total bills (oil and electric) don't hit more than £250 a month. And there's usually at least 1 adult home most of the day.
userxx · 18/01/2022 08:12

The heating is off at night. Why would you need it on if you're in bed.,

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/01/2022 08:20

I set it to 15 because it never goes below that and I don't want it switching on at night (old house, all the radiators click or gurgle when the heat goes on).

Spottybluepyjamas · 18/01/2022 09:00

We dont put it on at night. It comes on at 6pm and goes off at 8.30pm and stays off until 6am and is then off for the day at 9am. It gets a bit chilly in the day, but we just pop an extra jumper on!

KurtWilde · 18/01/2022 09:08

Heating is off at night.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 18/01/2022 09:15

Ours is off at night. It's on 7-9am and 4-8pm. We do have a gas fire in the lounge so go and sit in there if it gets too cold in the day.

3WildOnes · 18/01/2022 09:15

@newyear1 you house must be a mansion or have zero insulation. I live in an oldish house, 4 beds. We hear to 20 all day and 14 overnight, though it rarely clicks on overnight and our bills are considerably less than yours.

Westfacing · 18/01/2022 09:19

I had a new gas boiler installed in November and now have a fancy Google Nest thermostat and the App on my phone - two-bed flat, London.

I'm still experimenting but currently programmed to 21 during the day and 16 overnight, but the latter never kicks in - if I wake in the night I check the App and it has never gone below 19.

The flat must maintain heat well because the boiler barely comes on - no more than 1.5 hours usage in the past 24 hours.
