What temp do you have your heating on at night?

Just come downstairs to make a cuppa as baby DD has only just gone to sleep and it's so cold. Heating is set to 18 at night, and it's not come ok but it's soo chilly. We have a modern house but loads of windows 🥶

19 to help the damp/ condensation issue.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 14/01/2022 06:29

7 degrees overnight as we can't put it any lower than that - the house never ever drops below 14 though. I sleep with the windows open year-round even if there's snow on the ground.

I have it set to 19 during the day but it's probably only on for 4-5 hours in total. We have Sherpa blankets for the sofa and I'd rather be under one of those than have the heating on full blast.

If we've ever accidentally left it on overnight I know about it as I wake up with a pounding headache.

Am I being thick here ?
Do people leave their heating on all day ..but it clicks on at a certain temperature ?
I still don't understand why?

Ours goes off at 9 pm
Back on at 6 am - we generally get up at 6-15 am for work

Weekends comes on a bit later

I have Nest. The app that controls it only allows it to be completely turned off or controlled by a schedule but the schedule only allows it to be set by temperature, it doesn't allow it to be set to turn on and off. So the only way to ensure it stays off overnight is to set the temperature really low. So I set it to 9 degrees from 8pm to 6am, then a blast for an hour to go higher then to 18 for the day.

Yes. We do it at the moment to stop the house getting too cold whilst we are up and out of bed with a baby. We only do it in these early newborn days when the forecast is for close to 0 degrees as otherwise I like a cold bedroom and hate unnecessary heating!
BaggaTDoubleTroubleDoubleG · 14/01/2022 06:54

@DappledThings is the nest worth installing? We need to replace our thermostat so considering an upgrade.

RedWingBoots · 14/01/2022 06:55

Heating off overnight unless it is -1c or lower outside.

Comes on at 6am for an hour.

Then comes on mid-morning for 2 hours as WFH. I just move to the room that keeps the heat in.

Then on 5.30pm until 9pm.

Don't know the temperature.

@olddognknewtricks

I have a new build, so the thermostat requires a temperature overnight. It only comes on if it drops below that, so it's mostly off. I don't think you can put under 5 degrees as it's a pipe freezing risk.

Most of you lot are ice queens 😂

I didn't realise new builds were like that. My heating is off at night, it would never have occurred to me to have it on. The boiler does have frost protection so the heating would come on if it ever got below 5 degrees. I don't think it gets much lower than 16 or 17 in my bedroom with the heating off. If I was forced to choose an overnight temperature I'd set something like 10 so it would never actually come on.

All thermostats require a temp overnight, but I don't know anyone who actually sets it for more than 10 degrees. You have a duvet over you!
2DogsOnMySofa · 14/01/2022 06:59

Switch it off at night.

CSJobseeker · 14/01/2022 07:00

(Or at least all the thermostats I've ever had do. I didn't grow up with CH though)

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 14/01/2022 07:00

Heating comes on at 6.30. for 45 mins (18oC).
Back on again at 4.30pm for an hour (18oC).
We put exterior thermal insulation on our house 10 years ago, and it's really effective. I would definitely recommend it.

SweetPotatoDumpling · 14/01/2022 07:01

It's set to 'off'...why would you need it on just in case one person wanted to randomly come downstairs at 2am to make a cup of tea?? Put your dressing gown on ffs!

ShadowPuppets · 14/01/2022 07:02

Heating comes on at 5am, off at 10am and back on at 5pm until 10pm. Thermostat set to 18.

RichPetunia · 14/01/2022 07:02

Off at night with window open. Have a good wool duvet and water bottle. When I’m up in the morning though, it’s Baltic so there’s a bit of running around - heating on, fire on , cuppa. Also don’t go anywhere without slippers and my old man cardigan ☺️☺️

HelpINeeedSomebody · 14/01/2022 07:03

19.5 during the day - if I'm working from home it's usually on between 11-8pm.
If I've been working at the office the dcs put it on after school till around 9:30pm to give the house a chance to warm properly (and dry the washing).

Its switched off after that as I hate a warm bedroom when I'm going to sleep, it reminds me of stuffy hotel rooms. I feel like I have a much better sleep in a cold room.

RuthW · 14/01/2022 07:03

No heating between 10pm- 5am

Not sure! It came as standard when we got our new boiler a couple of years ago. It's quite useful. But it comes with all sorts of "smart" settings where it tries to predict when you want it on etc. I turned all of those off so it is working just as a traditional thermostat but with the added bonus of being able to make adjustments remotely.

I like the fact you can turn it off entirely when away for a few days in the winter then turn it on again remotely so the house starts warming up again before getting home.

Conspiracyornotr · 14/01/2022 07:07

Mine is just set to a certain temperature if its drops below 19 then the heating will come on

not me op , i like it nice and toasty , and depending on how cold it is i will leave it running all night , nothing makes me feel more shitty than getting out of bed and feeling cold our boiler broke down on sat , needs 5 new parts so we are living off to small fan heaters at the moment that only heat the immeditate bit around them , so the minute you walk away from them your freezing again council have said parts are in and its being done monday , all i will say is im so fed up of feeling freezing cold that this house will be the temp of the sahara desert once its done and running again lol
ThunderCrow · 14/01/2022 07:11

14 overnight. Which is, essentially, off as I've never known it to drop below that in order for the heating to turn on.

ToppersMum · 14/01/2022 07:11

I've just remembered that we didn't have central heating when I had my 2 winter babies. It must have been cold getting up to do feeds but I don't really remember. I dud bring them into bed to feed though. In the bad old days!
Now, heating off and bedroom window is open all year round overnight.

ExtremelyDetermined · 14/01/2022 07:12

11 at night so it never comes on. 18 from 6-8am and 4-10pm.

ViceLikeBlip · 14/01/2022 07:16

Off 10-6. It was 11 degrees in my kids' room last night 🤷‍♀️

(I'm very smug about my planet-saving lack of heating in general, but a) I'm just cheap, and b) I like it a bit cooler)
